The official ChatGPT Android app may have just leaked the GPT-4.5 launch early
Users of the ChatGPT Android app have spotted (via Android Police) a mention of a "GPT-4.5 research preview" in a pop-up alert inside the app, which sounds to us like the next version of ChatGPT's underlying model. Tapping on the alert doesn't actually do anything at the moment though, and it's not showing up for all Android users either. That suggests this is something that has sneaked out earlier than it should have. While we don't get an official debut date for GPT-4.5 here - and OpenAI has yet to say much publicly about its launch - the slip-up on the Android app points to the model arriving sooner rather than later, at least in preview form. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman recently went on the record to say that GPT-4.5 would be the final standalone model released by the company, with future releases combining all the available models (including the o-series reasoning models) into a single package. As for what it'll bring with it, we can expect the usual advances in accuracy, coding, math, summarizing. Larger context windows - prompt lengths, basically - may well be supported, and broader contextual awareness is a strong possibility too. However, this is only going to be a 0.5 advance: GPT-5 should be a bigger upgrade, though it's unlikely to be launching this year. That should see all of ChatGPT's tools packaged together, including features such as the recently unveiled Deep Research mode. We can expect GPT-4.5 to be exclusive to paying ChatGPT users first of all, before it makes its way down to free users. Meanwhile, OpenAI's many rivals in the field of AI aren't showing any signs of slowing down with their own releases.

OpenAI's latest GPT model is about to hit Android anytime soon
Summary ChatGPT is evolving rapidly, with a potential GPT-4.5 release on the horizon, as per a notification in the ChatGPT Android app. The notification doesn't do anything yet, suggesting it went live a bit early. Still, it's a strong sign that a release is near, with Pro users likely getting first dibs. It's easy to overlook just how far ChatGPT has come in the last couple of years. Sure, it made waves when it first launched, but the version we have now is a whole different beast compared to where it started. While everyone has been busy guessing what's next, Sam Altman, OpenAI's CEO, has dropped some hints that might clear things up. He has been talking up GPT-4.5, and it sounds like it could drop way sooner than anyone expected. Related How to create your own custom ChatGPT with OpenAI's GPT Builder Your GPT, your rules Posts Users on X have reported that the ChatGPT Android app is rolling out alerts about a "GPT-4.5 research preview." However, tapping on the notification doesn't do anything yet (via BleepingComputer). It looks like it might have gone live a bit too early. Still, its appearance is a pretty strong hint that GPT-4.5 is just around the corner and could roll out to more users soon. The timing and wording of the alert point to Pro subscribers getting first access before anyone else. When GPT-4.5 will actually drop is still up in the air. OpenAI's apps aren't fully ready to handle the new model yet, so don't expect it to hit right away. To make things murkier, OpenAI hasn't officially said a word about when it's coming. Some chatter suggests it could land this week, while other whispers hint it might take longer. ChatGPT's interface is getting a few upgrades, too Aside from the upgrades in GPT-4.5, AI researcher Tibor Blaho has spotted some cool tweaks being tested on ChatGPT's web interface. OpenAI is developing a file selector that combines deep search, canvas, and image-based tools. The idea is to streamline things, giving users a one-stop spot to pick models and manage features more efficiently. GPT-4.5 marks a big turning point for OpenAI. This shift signals the company's efforts to lean into algorithms that think more like humans, breaking down complex problems into smaller, step-by-step processes. With the addition of o3, OpenAI might claim it has hit a major AGI (artificial general intelligence) milestone, even if its idea of intelligence doesn't exactly match how everyone else sees it. But the real test is whether this update actually changes the game, making the chatbot way more useful and impactful, no matter how people use it.

OpenAI's GPT 4.5 spotted in Android beta, launch imminent
OpenAI's newest model, GPT-4.5, is coming sooner than we expected. A new reference has been spotted on ChatGPT's Android app that points to a model called "GPT-4.5 research preview." At the moment, OpenAI offers several models, including GPT-4o, GPT-4o with scheduled tasks, o1, o3-mini, and o3-mini-high. This can be confusing due to the variety of choices. As a result, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman recently announced that ChatGPT will simplify its model names and release versions like GPT-4.5, GPT-5, and so on. Today, some users have spotted an announcement in the ChatGPT beta app that states, "Try the GPT-4.5 research preview -- Pro users now have access to our newest, largest model." Clicking on the alert does nothing for now, but this seems to confirm that GPT-4.5 is close to release and may soon roll out to more users. However, the catch is that it would be available to Pro subscribers only, at least initially. ChatGPT Pro, which costs $200 per month, offers fewer limitations than Plus or Free plans. Beyond the references to GPT-4.5, AI researcher Tibor Blaho has spotted a few additional experiments in the ChatGPT web interface. For example, OpenAI is planning to move features like deep research, canvas, or image-based interactions to the file picker. This is a part of a redesigned interface that could allow you to easily select your model and switch between features. In addition, if "deep research" mode is enabled, ChatGPT's input field now reads: "I can research in the background to deliver a detailed report. For best results, include: any relevant sources, desired areas of focus, files related to your research, and "provide as many details as possible for best results." It's unclear when the GPT-4.5 model and other improvements will expand beyond the ChatGPT Pro subscription. OpenAI is expected to share more details soon.

Microsoft Gears Up for GPT-5 and GPT-4.5 Launch: Report
GPT-4.5 will be a traditional LLM and GPT-5 will be a unified AI system that will combine the o3 reasoning model and other ChatGPT tools. OpenAI chief Sam Altman recently revealed that GPT 4.5 and GPT-5 are coming in the next few weeks and months. Now, a report by The Verge says that Microsoft is gearing up and preparing its servers to host GPT-5 and GPT-4.5 models. The report further says that Microsoft may host the GPT-4.5 model (codenamed 'Orion') as early as next week. Not only that, OpenAI's next-generation frontier GPT-5 model could launch by May. It's important to note that the Redmond giant is hosting its annual Microsoft Build 2025 developer conference from May 19 to May 22. Around the same time, Google will host its I/O 2025 developer conference on May 20 and 21. So expect all three big companies to make major announcements in late May. Apart from that, it's expected that Microsoft will integrate OpenAI's GPT-4.5 and GPT-5 models on its Copilot app. Recently, the company added support for OpenAI's o1 reasoning model on Copilot via the Think Deeper tool, and it's free for all users. Next, Microsoft is preparing its own version of OpenAI's Operator AI agent. It allows you to delegate tasks to the agent and it goes to the web to autonomously perform actions for you. By the way, Microsoft just recently unveiled Muse, a World and Human Action Model (WHAM) that can generate video game visuals and controller actions. Some of the AI-powered games will be available on Copilot Labs soon. In case you are unaware, GPT-4.5 is going to be a traditional large language model and GPT-5 will be a unified AI system, that will combine its o3 reasoning model and other ChatGPT tools. Recently, Altman tweeted, "trying GPT-4.5 has been much more of a "feel the AGI" moment among high-taste testers than i expected!" So expect GPT-5 to be even more powerful. By the way, Anthropic is also set to launch its "Thinking" model in the next few days.

OpenAI’s GPT-4.5 May Arrive Next Week, but GPT-5 Is Just Around the Corner
The next landmark version of OpenAI's ChatGPT could use GPT-5, but don't start assuming this will have any semblance of "AGI." OpenAI may be preparing to slap a new coat of paint on ChatGPT with an updated AI model, GPT-4.5, as early as next week. If that's not enough to get users excited, the Sam Altman-led company is on the path toward its ultimate model while trying to hint that this next step will finally achieve "AGI." Spoiler alert: it won't. Based on anonymous sources, the Verge’s Tom Warren first reported that OpenAI’s next model could hit the scene sometime this month. Microsoft reportedly plans to host the company’s new model next week, though it may be longer before either company makes any official announcement. More importantly, for the “next big thing,†We may see the GPT-5 model as early as May, according to The Verge. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said in a post on X on Feb. 12 that ChatGPT users will get unlimited chat access to the “standard intelligence setting†of GPT-5 when it eventually drops, completely for free. GPT-5 will also integrate the o3 reasoning model for better fact-checking capabilities, which will be pretty important considering OpenAI’s leadership has indicated they want to make the next big GPT release as widely available as possible. Microsoft has a good reason to want GPT-5 in May. Microsoft Build is the company’s annual developer conference on May 22. Last year, Microsoft debuted the Copilot+ line of PCs with their set standard for on-device AI processing. The tech giant has been modifying its Copilot experience, adding extra features over time while sticking its chatbot UI in every 365 app, Github, Dropbox, and into Windows 11 itself. Altman only offered some vague promises of how it will structure access to GPT-5. Current Plus subscribers will access a 'higher level of intelligence’ of GPT-5, while big-money Pro subscribers will run it “at an even higher level of intelligence.†We have a clearer idea about the company's current AI products, like Deep Research, which are made for producing long-form reports based on prompts and some clarifying questions. OpenAI has promised to release that feature more widely, but you’ll still have to deal with a chatbot that is more prone to citing Wikipedia than hard, fact-based research. GPT-4.5, or Orion, is the company’s “last non-chain-of-thought model.†That relates to the idea that AI can break down a larger problem into more immediate steps, which AI developers claim mirrors how humans handle reasoning. With o3 integrated with GPT, OpenAI may start to make claims about reaching some milestone for AGI, or artificial general intelligenceâ€"an algorithm that can actually “think.†Of course, Altman and the company's definition of AGI differs from what most people would call “intelligent.†Color me skeptical about whether the next big GPT model is truly revolutionary. It may hit new reasoning benchmarks, but the big question is whether it creates new, tangible results that change how most people use and/or abuse the chatbot. If GPT-5 is more capable and efficient, as OpenAI suggests, it doesn’t necessarily mean we’ll finally find a new use case for AI. Less than a month ago, OpenAI and many other AI-centric companies were put on the back foot by DeepSeek, an AI model from China created for a fraction of the cost to develop GPT-4o, though with similar or better benchmarks than the leading models. OpenAI and Microsoft accused DeepSeek of copying their homework (a laughable irony considering GPT is trained on a mountain of copyrighted text taken without permission). The ball is now in OpenAI’s court and needs to prove it has the stuff with GPT-4.5 and GPT-5. That’s not necessarily for the sake of regular users but for investors.

Microsoft prepares for major GPT-5 updates from OpenAI
Microsoft is set to get a major AI update and is preparing its server capacity to support the next iteration of OpenAI's models. As OpenAI CEO, Sam Altman has previously indicated the brand will soon release the GPT-4.5 large language model in the coming weeks, the Verge has reported that the new model could be available "as early as next week." As with other technology advancements, OpenAI has made claims of GPT-4.5 being significantly more powerful than its prior version, GPT-4. The model, codenamed Orion, is set to be OpenAI's last "non-chain-of-thought model." Also indicating the coming launch of GPT-5 flagship model with major updates to its functionality, will also affect how partners, such as Microsoft incorporate the technology as well. Microsoft is set to receive the GPT-5 code in May; however, the publication noted that this time frame is not set in stone. Previously, reports suggested OpenAI intended to release GPT-4.5 in late 2024, but that launch was delayed. In its place, the company began introducing its series of reasoning models, which differ from large language models in that they require less training to produce a better result. They also allowed OpenAI to frequently release several new reasoning models in standard and mini versions in a short period. Recommended Videos However, the GPT-4o model clashed with subscription-based AI features on Microsoft's Azure cloud service. The company's team was at a loss on how to integrate some of the speech and translation functions. However, with enough time the engineers can sort out any hiccups, according to Android Headlines. OpenAI's most recent reasoning models are the o3 and o3 mini models. The company has indicated plans to combine its large language models and reasoning models to avoid confusion and get closer to its goal of achieving artificial general intelligence (AGI). Currently, users must select a model option for the type of processing result they desire. However, GPT-5 is set to be integrated with o3 mini, allowing users to have the power of both models in one option. Altman recently took to X to express his dissatisfaction with the breakdown of all the different AI models that are now available for his platform, stating that he believes in the "magic of unified intelligence."

Microsoft is boosting capacity to support OpenAI's GPT-4-5, GPT-5 models
Engineers at Microsoft are boosting infrastructure capacity in preparation for the latest iterations of OpenAI's large language models, the first of which could be implemented by the end of February. Sources close to Microsoft informed Tom Warren of The Verge that the software giant is planning to host OpenAI's newest GPT-4.5 as early as next week. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman recently disclosed that the company plans to "next ship GPT-4.5," but didn't provide an exact date. Although GPT-4.5 has been described as a "mid-generation" update, OpenAI has reportedly been training the model with synthetic data, which, according to IBM, can overcome data scarcity when training and fine-tuning AI models. OpenAI's use of synthetic data to train GPT-4.5 was initially reported by The Information. In addition to expecting GPT-4.5 any day now, The Verge's source said Microsoft expects to receive the more powerful GPT-5 in late May. Altman described GPT-5 "as a system that integrates a lot of our technology, including o3," which refers to OpenAI's latest reasoning model. On Jan. 31, the company released a smaller o3 model called o3-mini. Microsoft currently hosts OpenAI's models on its Azure platform. However, Microsoft clarified that the service does not interact with any tools operated by OpenAI, including ChatGPT. Microsoft and OpenAI expanded their partnership last month through President Donald Trump's $500 billion AI venture called Stargate. OpenAI has also "made a new, large Azure commitment that will continue to support all OpenAI products as well as training," Microsoft said. Since launching in November 2022, ChatGPT has set records as the world's fastest-growing consumer software platform. By February 2025, it had amassed roughly 400 million weekly active users, which marked a 33% jump in less than three months, according to OpenAI's chief operating officer Brad Lightcap. This remarkable growth has allowed OpenAI to seek funding at a $340 billion valuation, according to CNBC. However, competition is heating up with the recent launch of DeepSeek, an open-source AI model with Chinese origins that was developed at a tiny fraction of ChatGPT's cost. The launch of DeepSeek threatened the prevailing paradigm that OpenAI -- and the United States -- would remain the dominant player in the AI market. Venture capitalist Marc Andreessen dubbed DeepSeek as "AI's Sputnik moment," which refers to a society's realization that it needs to play catch up with rapid technological developments made elsewhere in the world. Markets certainly reacted with that collective awe as tech stocks, Bitcoin

Microsoft prepares for OpenAI's GPT-5 model
If OpenAI manages to ship GPT-5 in time for late May, it would align well with Microsoft's Build developer conference -- which starts on May 19th and will go head-to-head with Google I/O that week. Altman appeared onstage at Microsoft Build last year, just days after OpenAI released GPT-4o as a faster model that was free for all ChatGPT users. I reported last year that OpenAI's GPT-4o release surprised some teams at Microsoft because it undermined Microsoft's own paid-for AI services on Azure, which include speech and translation features. The GPT-4.5 and GPT-5 releases should come as less of a surprise, and I'm expecting the software maker to be ready with Copilot updates shortly after OpenAI's latest launch. Microsoft gave Copilot a big redesign in October, just months after OpenAI released GPT-4o.
