Prime Video Introduces AI-Powered 'Burn Bar' for NASCAR Broadcasts

Prime Video has revolutionized NASCAR broadcasting with the introduction of its AI-powered 'Burn Bar', a tool that provides viewers with real-time fuel usage data during races. This innovative feature, which made its debut during the Coca-Cola 600 on May 25, marks a significant advancement in race analysis and viewer engagement 1.

The Technology Behind the Burn Bar

The Burn Bar utilizes an AI model developed by Prime Video that analyzes thousands of performance data points per second. This includes a range of in-car telemetry signals, RPMs, throttle, and optical tracking of each car's position. The model then calculates each driver's fuel consumption and efficiency throughout the race 2.

Steve Letarte, NASCAR on Prime analyst and former crew chief for Jeff Gordon and Dale Earnhardt Jr., explains:

"It's the first true tool that is taking information off the car, making calculations and then displaying to the fan a calculation or measurement that is being used in the garage. And it does affect the team. There's not a sensor on the car giving us miles per gallon. It's a mathematical calculation of other cars performances." 1

Development and Testing Process

The development of the Burn Bar involved collaboration between NASCAR experts and data analysts. Letarte worked with Sam Schwartzstein, Prime Video's "Thursday Night Football Prime Vision" analyst, to create and test four different methodologies during the first part of the season, which was broadcast by Fox 1.

The team rigorously tested their models by comparing their predictions with actual data from race teams after each event. This process allowed them to refine their approach and select the most accurate methodology 2.

Real-World Impact and Future Potential

The Burn Bar faced its most challenging test during last week's race at Michigan, where the final 48 laps were run without a caution flag. The tool accurately predicted that William Byron would run out of fuel and that Denny Hamlin would be on the edge of his fuel capacity 1.

Alex Strand, Prime Video's senior coordinating producer for live sports, sees the Burn Bar as just the beginning of what AI can bring to NASCAR coverage:

"It's really cool to live in a world where it shows us that anything is possible. We're starting with something that we're really excited about, but it's setting us down a path that will open up new doors for us." 2

The Future of NASCAR Broadcasting

Prime Video's introduction of the Burn Bar represents a significant step forward in sports broadcasting technology. As part of a seven-year agreement to carry five NASCAR races per season, Prime Video is well-positioned to continue innovating and enhancing the viewer experience 1.

The success of the Burn Bar in its first year has set a high standard for future developments. As the technology continues to evolve, fans can expect even more sophisticated analysis tools that will provide deeper insights into race strategy and performance 2.

With the final race of Prime Video's coverage for this season set to take place at Pocono on June 22, viewers and industry experts alike are eagerly anticipating what new innovations the platform might introduce in the coming years 1.
