Qualcomm Now Brings AI-Powered Features To Windows Laptops For Rs 60,000: What It Offers - News18
Qualcomm has shown promise with its premium Snapdragon X processors which is now coming to a more affordable range in the market this year. The AI PC race is heating up as major AI chip manufacturers showcase their new ranges at the ongoing IFA 2024 in Berlin this week. Intel has talked about its new Core Ultra processors and now we have Qualcomm upping the ante with its AI Snapdragon X series CPUs that it claims will be available on laptops priced at $700 (Rs 57,100 approx) in the market. The new 8-core Snapdragon X Plus processors announced at the event by the company focus on AI processes that will deliver longer battery life, which seems to be the major highlight of this new range of AI processors in the market. The new ARM-based Snapdragon X Elite processors have shown their worth and the early signs with the new models powered by the CPU have shown that Windows PCs have the potential to change the paradigm of the PC industry. But the whole focus around AI seems premature as the supporting applications are still limited. That's not all, the ARM-based processors are yet to see major apps come native to the platform, while games are yet to show their mettle on the hardware. Qualcomm says the new processors will not compromise on performance for efficiency but the price drop is likely to have some cutbacks which we'll know in the near future. Most of the Snapdragon-based laptops that we have tested or seen are priced well above Rs 1 lakh in the market, which is not a very vibrant segment for buyers as they have the Macs lingering around. However, the push for $700 AI laptops with the new processors will surely open a new market that buyers and the industry will be keeping a close on. We'll see the new so-called affordable AI laptops with the new Snapdragon X processor rolling out from brands like HP, Asus, MSI and more by the end of this year.

Qualcomm Reveals Snapdragon X Plus for Cheaper Co-Pilot+ PCs
The AI-first laptops with the chip promise better processing and higher efficiency for under $1,000. Qualcomm is still going strong with its bet on its AI-first processors powering up Windows PCs. At IFA in Berlin, the company unveiled a new, more cost-efficient version of the Snapdragon X Plus. Soon, you'll find plenty of AI-first Copilot+ laptops for less than $1,000. The Oryon CPU-based Snapdragon X Plus is an 8-core chip, compared to the 10-core Snapdragon X Plus announced in April. In its press release, Qualcomm boasts that the laptop processor is so power efficient that batteries last longer for the machines it's powering. Qualcomm mentions up to multiple days of battery on a single charge in the chip brief. However, Microsoft's Pavan Davuluri, a VP at Microsoft, is more specific in the press release about "all-day battery life." The NPU on board is rated at 45 TOPS, or trillions of operations per second, slightly more than the baseline operating standard for running Co-Pilot+. The Snapdragon X Plus 8-core supports chip-to-cloud security, WiFi 7, UFS 4.0, and up to 64GB of memory. Its integrated GPU can handle up to three external monitors at a time. Qualcomm's lofty claims about the Snapdragon X Plus is that its 8-core Oryon CPU performs over 60% faster than Intel's last-gen Core Ultra 7, a 16-core AI-first chip, with almost 180% more efficiency. The proof is in the pudding, or the benchmark numbers and anecdotal evidence, as it were. The first laptops with the chip will soon be available from well-known manufacturers like Asus, Acer, Dell, HP, Lenovo, and Samsung, to name a few. The PC industry has been all-in on AI PCs since Co-Pilot+ launched in May. This latest 8-core release from Qualcomm seems particularly tuned to help sell cheaper laptops. And the more these laptops make up the market share, the better the industry's justification for making way for AI-first PCs. Qualcomm's Snapdragon X relies on the NPU to do the bulk of the AI work, though it still has an integrated GPU. The apps that work best on it are specifically optimized for this architecture. And if they can get more people to buy an affordable computer based on an AI-first chip, it will be easier for the industry to justify its existence.Â

Qualcomm is bringing 45 TOPS of AI power to budget laptops with a new Snapdragon chipset
During a keynote speech ahead of the IFA Berlin conference, Qualcomm President and CEO Cristiano Amon officially announced the new 8-core Snapdragon X Plus. These new chipsets will bring Qualcomm Snapdragon X Copilot+ AI PCs to even more hands thanks to a more economic pice tag in the $700-$900 range. The new 8-core processors feature the same Qualcomm Oryon architecture as the higher-end Snapdragon X Plus and X Elite chipsets, which means users can expect to same quality of performance and power efficiency as the other Copliot+ machines. Additionally the new budget-friendly Snapdragon X Plus 8-core processors will have the same 45 TOPS Qualcomm Hexagon NPU as its pricier counterparts. The Snapdragon X Plus 8-core chipset had leaked ahead of IFA courtesy of well-known industry leaker Evan Blass. And it seems those rumors were pretty bang-on. Qualcomm is launching Snapdragon X Plus 8-core laptops from Acer, ASUS, Dell Technologies, HP, Lenovo, and Samsung. Some of those laptops are available for purchase today. The 8-core Snapdragon X Plus chipset comes in two SKUs: the XIP-46-100 and XIP-42-100. This leaves Qualcomm with four different tiers of Snapdragon X Plus chips thanks to the XIP-66-100 and XIP-64-100 chips which launched earlier this year. The XIP-46-100 features 8 CPU cores, a 30 MB total cache, a max multicore frequency of 3.4 GHz, a Boost frequency of 4.0GHz for single-core performance, an XI-45 Qualcomm Adreno GPU with 2.1 teraflops of power, and a 45 TOPS Qualcomm Hexagon NPU. The XIP-42-100 features 8 CPU cores, a 30 MB total cache, a max multicore frequency of 3.2 GHz, a Boost frequency of 3.4 GHz for single-core performance, an XI-45 Qualcomm Adreno GPU with 1.7 teraflops of power, and a 45 TOPS Qualcomm Hexagon NPU. As was leaked just last week, the new Snapdragon X Plus chipsets offer support for up to 3 external 4K displays and access to all of the Copilot+ PC features. Thanks to the earlier chipset leak, we had expected the new Snapdragon X Plus systems to be about $800 or so, and given the range Qualcomm expects from OEM partners, that seems to be about the average price for one of the upcoming budget-friendly AI PCs. While $700-900 can still be rather pricey for a laptop, even with the lower-end Snapdragon X Plus chipsets, these are premium-style laptops in the ultra-thin and light category. So it isn't too strange to see them retail for a bit of a premium price. "With Snapdragon X Plus 8-core, we are now bringing to more users these transformative AI experiences, and the best-in-class performance and unprecedented battery life of our power efficient custom Qualcomm Oryon CPU," Amon said in a statement given to Laptop Mag ahead of the press conference. "We're proud to be working with leading global OEMs and retail partners to expand our portfolio and enable enterprise customers and consumers." Laptop Mag's IFA Berlin 2024 Issue celebrates one of the world's longest-running consumer tech expos, Germany's own Internationale FunkAusstellung Berlin. Our on-the-ground team will bring you all the news emerging from the showroom floor of Messe Berlin and highlight the best in consumer tech as we announce our inaugural Laptop Laurel winners for best-in-show products.

This cheaper Snapdragon X Plus chip brings big AI performance for just $700 -- here's what we know
Snapdragon X Elite has really taken the fight to Apple silicon in terms of performance, AI prowess and power efficiency. And now, at IFA 2024, Qualcomm is introducing a new lower cost Snapdragon X Plus variant that the company says will make AI laptops even more affordable -- in fact, from just $700. The very memorably named X1P-46-100 and X1P-42-100 chipsets (the "46" sports a faster clock speed and more powerful integrated graphics) sit at the bottom of the list of many Windows on Arm CPUs that Qualcomm has made -- packing 8 cores rather than 10, but still giving you that same 45 Trillion Operations Per second (TOPs) of AI potential on that NPU. The first concern I had upon reading the news is that while the NPU still gives you that AI power to effectively manage the Copilot+ PC features, does this downtuning of the chip compromise performance elsewhere? Well, for most of your productivity needs, this is still a thoroughly decent chip based on benchmarking results. Sure, it's not going to set the world on fire, but there's enough here to get stuff done. So as you can see, single-core and multicore performance takes a hit, and you'll see a similar dip in graphics too with framerates in WildLife Extreme Vulkan hitting up to 26 FPS on the more powerful version. Expect to see laptop makers announce a whole bunch of new systems sporting these chips -- and we're hoping they keep up their side of the bargain and bring them to market from $700. I'm excited to get my hands on one (currently, we're seeing systems from the likes of Asus and more set to launch soon), because this reduced performance could lead to improved battery life too. Let's see...
