Galaxy S25 could feature a big upgrade for the much-maligned Bixby Samsung has been trying to make Bixby a thing for almost eight years now, with absolutely no success whatsoever. Alexa and Siri may be household names, but Bixby has long been considered something of a joke at best. That doesn't seem to be stopping Samsung from trying to promote its assistant to the big leagues with AI. We've long heard rumors Samsung could be readying a substantial AI upgrade to Bixby, which would put it on par with ChatGPT and Google Gemini rather than Alexa or Google Assistant. According to a new report from ET News, the first AI upgrades could be arriving alongside the Samsung Galaxy S25 early next year. Apparently Samsung has prepared Large Language Model (LLM) support for Bixby, which has already been released without fanfare in China on the Galaxy Tab S10. The report also claims that the upgrade was originally intended for the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Z Flip 6, but scheduling issues forced a delay . ET News claims that Bixby's LLM will be powered by the Samsung Gauss model alongside Google Gemini. Meanwhile the Chinese model supposedly uses Gauss with a Chinese LLM -- meaning the experience of using the two may be totally different. Adding LLM support should make Bixby more powerful, allowing the assistant to become more conversational and to offer better answers. Other features may also include things like image generation, which have become a staple feature on chatbots and other AI software over the past year. The fact the LLM will reportedly take advantage of Google Gemini could give us an idea of what to expect. Whether that will actually make people care about Bixby is another matter. Samsung hasn't had much success getting users to treat Bixby as anything more than bloatware over the years, even back in the days when it was pushing Bixby really hard. Considering there's already so much popular competition in the AI market, including the Samsung-compatible Google Gemini, I doubt it's going to be an easy task. Still, leaker Ice Universe believes that the new Bixby will be "the biggest selling point" for the Galaxy S25. We'll have to wait and see what actually happens once the Galaxy S25's launch event actually rolls around. The next Galaxy Unpacked is expected to take place on January 23, which is where we'll see our first official look at the Galaxy S25 and the final version of One UI 7 -- Samsung's take on Android 15.

According to an ET News report, the Galaxy S25 series, which is scheduled for launch early next year, will see the AI-upgraded Bixby being rolled out globally. Citing people familiar with the matter, the publication claimed that the voice assistant will be equipped with a large language model (LLM), that will enable several advanced capabilities Bixby currently cannot perform. Some of these capabilities are already known. The Samsung Galaxy W25 series in China comes with a better understanding of the context behind a natural language command. It can also process complex instructions that include two or more tasks. Samsung had also stated that Bixby could respond to vague questions by understanding user behaviour and deeper context. For instance, if a user says, "How to get there?", the AI assistant can check that the user is at their office and that it is time to go home, and show navigation to their home. Further, the Chinese version of Bixby can generate text and show videos by sourcing it from the Web. It can also translate Web pages, as well as share an option to export the generated text in different Microsoft Office file formats such as Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and more. This version of Bixby also features a new user interface that can be opened in a full-screen window. Similar to the Gemini AI assistant, there is a text field at the bottom and minimal layout. Additionally, users can interact with Samsung's native virtual assistant with both text and speech as input. It can also be activated on any screen and on top of any app on the smartphone. Notably, apart from the W25 series, the AI-powered Bixby was also rolled out to Samsung's Bespoke AI home appliances. However, the capabilities of the assistant on these devices are limited and very device-centric.

Based on this new report, it looks as though the rest of the world will be getting access to the new version, most probably in January. That's when the Galaxy S25 series is rumored to be launching, and it's also when we're expecting One UI 7 (based on Android 15) to be pushed out to the masses. The One UI 7 software update is currently in beta testing. Samsung has of course already pushed out plenty of Galaxy AI features on its phones this year - including Sketch to Image and the Circle to Search feature. Google Gemini is also available on Samsung handsets as well. But with LLM support added to Bixby, Samsung phones will get even more powerful, with more comprehensive answers and image generation capabilities. Google has already given its own Google Assistant an LLM upgrade in the form of Google Gemini - and it'll be interesting to see how much competition Bixby gives Gemini when it comes to built-in options on the best Android phones.
