Tesla Outperforms Chinese Rivals in Advanced Driving Assistance Tests

Tesla's advanced driving assistance systems (ADAS) outperformed Chinese competitors in recent tests conducted by state media and Bytedance's auto unit, sparking discussions about AI training data and safety concerns in China's EV market.

Tesla Leads in ADAS Performance Tests

In a recent series of tests conducted jointly by China's state television CCTV and Bytedance's auto unit Dcar, Tesla's advanced driving assistance systems (ADAS) outperformed Chinese rivals, including BYD, Xiaomi, and Huawei. The tests, which evaluated level 2 ADAS from over 20 electric vehicle brands, focused on high-risk scenarios on highways and in urban traffic 1.

Tesla's Model 3 and Model X excelled in the highway tests, passing five out of six scenarios, while competitors like BYD's Denza Z9GT and Huawei-backed Aito M9 failed in three scenarios. Xiaomi's SU7 managed to pass only one of the six scenarios 1.

AI Training Data Challenges

Tesla CEO Elon Musk highlighted a significant challenge facing the company in China. Due to laws against data export, Tesla achieved top results despite having no local training data. Musk described this situation as a "quandary," as U.S. regulations prevent Tesla's AI software from being trained in China, while the company seeks approval from Chinese regulators to transfer locally saved data back to the United States for algorithm training 2.

Safety Concerns and Regulatory Response

The test results come amid growing safety concerns in China regarding ADAS technology. A fatal highway accident involving a Xiaomi SU7 in March 2023 killed three people, prompting increased scrutiny of these systems 1.

In response to these concerns, Chinese authorities have taken steps to regulate the industry:

  1. Banning the use of terms like "smart driving" and "autonomous driving" in marketing materials for driving assistance features.
  2. The public security ministry announced plans to establish legal responsibilities related to the technology, warning drivers of safety and legal risks when using assisted driving features 2.

Market Dynamics and Technology Approaches

Tesla's success in the ADAS tests comes at a crucial time for the company in the Chinese market. While Tesla's sales of China-made electric vehicles saw a slight increase of 0.8% in June 2023, breaking an eight-month losing streak, the company faces increasing pressure from lower-cost models offered by Chinese competitors 1.

A key difference in technology approaches has emerged:

  • Tesla relies solely on cameras as sensors and artificial intelligence for its ADAS.
  • Most Chinese competitors, including BYD, use additional lidar (light detection and range sensors) to ensure performance 1.

Tesla's assisted driving suite is available in China for nearly $9,000, while local rivals offer similar technology at no extra cost, adding pressure to Tesla's self-driving aspirations in the market 2.
