ITV's AI Job Posting Sparks Controversy in TV Industry

ITV, a major British broadcaster, has found itself at the center of a heated debate after posting a job advertisement for a "head of generative AI innovation" role. The position, which offers a salary range of £80,000 to £95,000 per year, aims to "drive the strategy and execution of AI-driven transformation across ITV Studios and ITV's streaming services" 1.

TV Writers Express Concern

The job posting has drawn sharp criticism from prominent television writers. Lisa McGee, creator of the hit series "Derry Girls," expressed her dismay, calling the move "incredibly depressing" and "unethical." McGee argued that "great stories are in the telling, the tone, the point of view, the personal," emphasizing that "screenwriting is both an art form and a craft" 1.

Jack Rooke, creator of Channel 4's "Big Boys," echoed McGee's sentiments. He pointed out that ITV's most successful scripted projects, such as "Mr Bates Vs The Post Office" and "Coronation Street," were "built by real life writers, creating characters we have loved for decades" 1.

ITV's Response and Clarification

In response to the backlash, ITV clarified that the AI role would not be used to generate ideas, but rather to assist with ideas created by humans. An ITV spokesperson stated, "While nothing can replace the human creativity of our teams, we are exploring how GenAI can help our staff to work more efficiently and creatively and optimise our content for viewers" 1.

Writers' Guild Weighs In

The Writers' Guild of Great Britain also joined the conversation, with general secretary Ellie Peers suggesting that ITV would be "better off investing in screenwriters rather than gimmicks" if they had £95,000 to spare 2.

Broader Implications for the Entertainment Industry

This controversy highlights the growing tension between technological advancements and creative industries. As AI continues to evolve, questions arise about its role in traditionally human-centric fields like screenwriting and content creation. The debate underscores the need for a balanced approach that leverages AI's capabilities while preserving the irreplaceable value of human creativity and experience in storytelling.
