No time to scroll through long WhatsApp chats? Ask Meta AI to summarize them for you. As reported by WABetaInfo, WhatsApp is testing a new "Summarize with Meta AI" feature for individual and group chats on Android. The button appears above unread messages in a conversation, and you can tap it to generate a quick summary. It's an opt-in feature. In settings, users will be required to enable Private Processing, which Meta describes as an "optional capability that enables users to initiate a request to a confidential and secure environment and use AI for processing messages where no one -- including Meta and WhatsApp -- can access them." AI Summaries won't work if you have Advanced Chat Privacy enabled, WABetaInfo notes. It's the same feature that blocks anyone from exporting your chat. An image shared by WABetaInfo also suggests Meta is working on an AI writing assistant for WhatsApp. Instagram already has a "Rewrite" function that taps into the Meta AI chatbot to spruce up captions and messages. Meta is testing the Summarize with Meta AI button for Instagram DMs as well. I spotted it on my iOS device earlier this week. However, "this feature isn't available to everyone at the moment," Instagram says on a support page. AI-generated summaries haven't had a great track record so far. Wikipedia paused the feature just a day into testing after editors raised concerns about reliability. In January, Apple had to pause news-related AI notification summaries after they provided false information. This week, Meta also began testing DMs for Threads. If the company is testing AI summaries for messages on Instagram and WhatsApp, there's a good chance the feature could roll out to other apps like Messenger and Threads as well.

Now, WhatsApp is testing its own in-app, AI-powered feature that summarizes unread messages in chats, groups, and channels. Here's how it works. Once activated, if there's a large enough message backlog, a new "Summarize with Meta AI" button appears in place of the usual "X unread messages" label. Tapping it returns a brief recap of the conversation. According to WhatsApp, none of the message content is stored or linked to the user. Everything is handled in an isolated environment in the cloud, and the summaries are deleted immediately after processing. As WABetaInfo notes, the feature is also automatically disabled in conversations that use Advanced Privacy, ensuring that no AI interaction takes place in those cases, even with encryption in place. For now, the message summarization feature is only available to some users in the Android beta and is rolling out gradually. WhatsApp hasn't shared details about availability for iOS, nor about language support or compatibility across regions. Following much speculation, WhatsApp has reportedly begun testing a new feature that will allow users to privately summarise unread messages in both individual and group chats using Meta AI. According to Wabetainfo, the feature was discovered in the most recent WhatsApp beta for Android, version 2.25.18.18. With this new feature, Meta's instant messaging platform hopes to assist users in managing large volumes of messages while maintaining privacy. The report confirmed that the feature is powered by Meta AI and is built on a privacy preserving system system called Private Processing. This will enable summaries to be generated securely, ensuring that no message data leaves the users device or stored externally, making it safe. According to the report, a new XX unread messages button appears once a certain number of incoming messages is reached. Tapping this generates a private summary of the conversation, which is processed locally using end-to-end encrypted routing and anonymised request handling.
