Workday's AI Innovation at DevCon 2025

Workday, a leading enterprise management software company, has unveiled a suite of new AI features at its annual developer conference, Workday DevCon 2025. The company is repositioning itself as "the AI platform for managing people, money, and agents," moving beyond its traditional role in financial and HR management software 1.

New AI Developer Toolset

The centerpiece of Workday's announcement is a new developer toolset designed to help customers manage their growing roster of AI tools within the Workday ecosystem. This toolset includes several key components:

  1. Agent Gateway: This feature allows developers to integrate third-party AI agents into Workday's new Agent System of Record (ASOR). It serves as a platform for assigning tasks to and overseeing collaboration between virtual employees 13.

  2. AI Widgets: Developers can now add AI-powered widgets to their apps, making it easier for users to access automated assistance. For example, a chatbot widget could be integrated to handle customer service queries 13.

  3. Expanded AI Gateway APIs: These allow customers to integrate new Workday AI features directly into their apps. Users can ask finance- or HR-related questions in natural language and receive AI-generated responses 12.

Developer Copilot and Productivity Boost

Workday also introduced its Developer Copilot, an AI assistant designed to simplify and streamline the app-building process. The company claims this tool can increase developer productivity by up to 50% 1. The Copilot can:

  • Generate application code snippets
  • Create data queries
  • Produce functional orchestrations
  • Provide API recommendations 23

Workday Illuminate and AI Integration

The new AI features are built on top of Workday Illuminate, the company's AI platform introduced in September 2024. Illuminate is fed by more than one trillion HR and financial transactions each year, providing it with a deep contextual understanding of work processes 12.

Partner Network and Marketplace

Workday is expanding its ecosystem by allowing partners to enroll in a new Agent Partner Network and list agents on the Workday Marketplace. This enables customers to select agents for their specific needs and manage them alongside human workers 3.

Industry leaders joining the partner network include Amazon Web Services, IBM, Deloitte, and several others. Swami Sivasubramanian, VP of agentic AI at AWS, stated, "With Workday's Agent System of Record, organizations will be much better positioned to ethically manage all these agents" 3.

Availability and Future Outlook

Most of the new features, including AI Gateway Services, AI widgets, and new Developer Copilot capabilities, will be generally available by the end of 2025. The Agent Gateway will initially be available to a select cohort of customers 13.

As artificial intelligence becomes increasingly central to app development, Workday's new toolset aims to help developers navigate the complex and fragmented AI landscape. Matthew Grippo, Workday's SVP of core software, emphasized that these tools will empower developers to "seamlessly integrate powerful AI capabilities into the apps and agents that will define the future of work" 1.
