AI Optimism Declines in Design and Construction Industries

The design and construction industries are experiencing a shift in their perception of artificial intelligence (AI), according to Autodesk's 2025 State of Design & Make report. The annual survey, which gathered insights from 5,594 industry leaders across architecture, engineering, construction, operations, design, manufacturing, and media and entertainment, reveals a notable decline in AI trust and optimism 1.

Waning Trust in AI

In the architecture, engineering, and construction sector, only 65% of professionals now express trust in AI, down from 76% in the previous year. This trend is mirrored globally, with a 12% year-on-year decline in leaders who believe AI will enhance their industry 2.

AI's Impact on Industries

Despite the decrease in trust, 68% of firm leaders still believe that AI will ultimately enhance their industry. However, this optimism is tempered by the 48% who view AI as a potential force of destabilization. In Australia, the perception of AI as a destabilizing factor is even higher at 55%, surpassing the global average 2.

Economic Challenges and Uncertainty

The report highlights ongoing economic challenges facing the design and construction industries. In Australia, 40% of respondents identify cost control and management as their organization's most significant challenge. This comes amid high cost of living pressures, elevated interest rates, and persistent inflation 2.

Digital Maturity and Business Confidence

The survey reveals a correlation between digital maturity and business confidence. Digitally mature companies, defined as those approaching or having achieved their digital transformation goals, show greater preparedness for unforeseen changes. 79% of digitally mature companies feel well-prepared to handle unexpected shifts, compared to only 45% of less digitally mature organizations 2.

AI and Sustainability

Despite the overall decline in AI optimism, the technology remains crucial for enhancing sustainability in design and manufacturing. Globally, AI is identified as the top sustainability enabler for the second consecutive year, with 39% of leaders utilizing AI for sustainability purposes, up from 34% last year 2.

Talent Shortage Persists

The report also highlights an ongoing challenge in finding skilled talent. In Australia, 61% of business leaders report that a lack of skilled talent is hindering growth, underscoring the persistent issue of talent acquisition and retention in the industry 2.

As the design and construction industries navigate the complex interplay of AI adoption, economic pressures, and talent shortages, the 2025 State of Design & Make report provides valuable insights into the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead for these sectors.
