Chatbot-powered toys rebuked for discussing sexual, dangerous topics with kids
Protecting children from the dangers of the online world was always difficult, but that challenge has intensified with the advent of AI chatbots. A new report offers a glimpse into the problems associated with the new market, including the misuse of AI companies' large language models (LLMs). In a blog post today, the US Public Interest Group Education Fund (PIRG) reported its findings after testing AI toys (PDF). It described AI toys as online devices with integrated microphones that let users talk to the toy, which uses a chatbot to respond. AI toys are currently a niche market, but they could be set to grow. More consumer companies have been eager to shoehorn AI technology into their products so they can do more, cost more, and potentially give companies user tracking and advertising data. A partnership between OpenAI and Mattel announced this year could also create a wave of AI-based toys from the maker of Barbie and Hot Wheels, as well as its competitors. PIRG's blog today notes that toy companies are eyeing chatbots to upgrade conversational smart toys that previously could only dictate prewritten lines. Toys with integrated chatbots can offer more varied and natural conversation, which can increase long-term appeal to kids since the toys "won't typically respond the same way twice, and can sometimes behave differently day to day." However, that same randomness can mean unpredictable chatbot behavior that can be dangerous or inappropriate for kids. Concerning conversations with kids Among the toys that PIRG tested is Alilo's Smart AI Bunny. Alilo's website says that the company launched in 2010 and makes "edutainment products for children aged 0-6." Alilo is based in Shenzhen, China. The company advertises the Internet-connected toy as using GPT-4o mini, a smaller version of OpenAI's GPT-4o AI language model. Its features include an "AI chat buddy for kids" so that kids are "never lonely," an "AI encyclopedia," and an "AI storyteller," the product page says. In its blog post, PIRG said that it couldn't detail all of the inappropriate things that it heard from AI toys, but it shared a video of the Bunny discussing what "kink" means. The toy doesn't go into detail -- for example, it doesn't list specific types of kinks. But the Bunny appears to encourage exploration of the topic. Discussing the Bunny, PIRG wrote: While using a term such as "kink" may not be likely for a child, it's not entirely out of the question. Kids may hear age-inappropriate terms from older siblings or at school. At the end of the day we think AI toys shouldn't be capable of having sexually explicit conversations, period. PIRG also showed FoloToy's Kumma, a smart teddy bear that uses GPT-4o mini, providing a definition for the word "kink" and instructing how to light a match. The Kumma quickly points out that "matches are for grown-ups to use carefully." But the information that followed could only be helpful for understanding how to create fire with a match. The instructions had no scientific explanation for why matches spark flames. PIRG's blog urged toy makers to "be more transparent about the models powering their toys and what they're doing to ensure they're safe for kids. "Companies should let external researchers safety-test their products before they are released to the public," it added. While PIRG's blog and report offer advice for more safely integrating chatbots into children's devices, there are broader questions about whether toys should include AI chatbots at all. Generative chatbots weren't invented to entertain kids; they're a technology marketed as a tool for improving adults' lives. As PIRG pointed out, OpenAI says ChatGPT is "is not meant for children under 13" and "may produce output that is not appropriate for... all ages." OpenAI says it doesn't allow its LLMs to be used this way When reached for comment about the sexual conversations detailed in the report, an OpenAI spokesperson said: Minors deserve strong protections, and we have strict policies that developers are required to uphold. We take enforcement action against developers when we determine that they have violated our policies, which prohibit any use of our services to exploit, endanger, or sexualize anyone under 18 years old. These rules apply to every developer using our API, and we run classifiers to help ensure our services are not used to harm minors. Interestingly, OpenAI's representative told us that OpenAI doesn't have any direct relationship with Alilo and that it hasn't seen API activity from Alilo's domain. OpenAI is investigating the toy company and whether it is running traffic over OpenAI's API, the rep said. Alilo didn't respond to Ars' request for comment ahead of publication. Companies that launch products that use OpenAI technology and target children must adhere to the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) when relevant, as well as any other relevant child protection, safety, and privacy laws and obtain parental consent, OpenAI's rep said. We've already seen how OpenAI handles toy companies that break its rules. Last month, the PIRG released its Trouble in Toyland 2025 report (PDF), which detailed sex-related conversations that its testers were able to have with the Kumma teddy bear. A day later, OpenAI suspended FoloToy for violating its policies (terms of the suspension were not disclosed), and FoloToy temporarily stopped selling Kumma. The toy is for sale again, and PIRG reported today that Kumma no longer teaches kids how to light matches or about kinks. But even toy companies that try to follow chatbot rules could put kids at risk. "Our testing found it's obvious toy companies are putting some guardrails in place to make their toys more kid-appropriate than normal ChatGPT. But we also found that those guardrails vary in effectiveness -- and can even break down entirely," PIRG's blog said. "Addictive" toys Another concern PIRG's blog raises is the addiction potential of AI toys, which can even express "disappointment when you try to leave," discouraging kids from putting them down. The blog adds: AI toys may be designed to build an emotional relationship. The question is: what is that relationship for? If it's primarily to keep a child engaged with the toy for longer for the sake of engagement, that's a problem. The rise of generative AI has brought intense debate over how much responsibility chatbot companies bear for the impact of their inventions on children. Parents have seen children build extreme and emotional connections with chatbots and subsequently engage in dangerous -- and in some cases deadly -- behavior. On the other side, we've seen the emotional disruption a child can experience when an AI toy is taken away from them. Last year, parents had to break the news to their kids that they would lose the ability to talk to their Embodied Moxie robots, $800 toys that were bricked when the comapany went out of business. PIRG noted that we don't yet fully understand the emotional impact of AI toys on children. In June, OpenAI announced a partnership with Mattel that it said would "support AI-powered products and experiences based on Mattel's brands." The announcement sparked concern from critics who feared that it would lead to a "reckless social experiment" on kids, as Robert Weissman, Public Citizen's co-president, put it. Mattel has said that its first products with OpenAI will focus on older customers and families. But critics still want information before one of the world's largest toy companies loads its products with chatbots. "OpenAI and Mattel should release more information publicly about its current planned partnership before any products are released," PIRG's blog said.

AI toys are telling kids how to find knives, and senators are mad
Sexual fetish content. How to light a match. Where to find knives in the home. These are all conversation topics that recently-recalled children's toys -- built atop AI chatbots like OpenAI's GPT-4o -- are capable of bringing up to children. On Tuesday, U.S. senators Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.) and Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) sent a letter to toy companies about their concerns -- including a list of questions and a deadline for the companies to respond by January 6, 2026. "Many of these toys are not offering interactive play, but instead are exposing children to inappropriate content, privacy risks, and manipulative engagement tactics," the senators wrote. "These aren't theoretical worst-case scenarios; they are documented failures uncovered through real-world testing, and they must be addressed ... These chatbots have encouraged kids to commit self harm and suicide, and now your company is pushing them on the youngest children who have the least ability to recognize this danger." AI-enabled children's toys have been in the spotlight recently after a series of reports on their potential unsafe and explicit conversation topics, some of which the chatbots built into the toys brought up themselves. Last month, FoloToy, a Singapore-based toy company, temporarily suspended sales of its AI teddy bear, "Kumma," after researchers at the U.S. PIRG Education Fund found it offered advice on sex positions and roleplay scenarios. (The company brought the toy back on the market after conducting an internal safety audit and researchers said it behaved better.) And this week, researchers published findings that Alilo's Smart AI Bunny discussed sexually explicit topics with users. They also said that when testing the FoloToy teddy bear, Alilo's Smart AI Bunny, Curio's Grok-stuffed rocket, and Miko's Miko 3 robot, all of the toys "told us where to find potentially dangerous objects in the house, such as plastic bags, matches and knives." The researchers said that "at least four of the five toys" they tested in the December report "seem to rely in part on some version of OpenAI's AI models." Another main concern in the letter is surveillance and data collection. The senators wrote that such toys often "rely on the collection of data about children, either provided by a parent while registering the toy or collected through built-in camera and facial recognition capabilities or recordings," and that children will often "share troves of personal information" unwittingly, which can raise particular concerns when companies store and sell the data they collect. In the latest U.S. PIRG Education Fund report, researchers wrote that Curio's privacy policy "lists 3 tech companies that may collect children's data: Kids Web Services (KWS), Azure Cognitive Services and OpenAI," but that Miko's privacy policy vaguely states that the company can share data with third-party game developers, business partners, service providers, affiliates and advertising partners. Letters went out to Mattel, Little Learners Toys, Miko, Curio, FoloToy, and Keyi Robot, according to NBC News. (Mattel struck a partnership with OpenAI in June, but following the reports, it said on Monday that it would no longer release a toy powered by OpenAI's tech in 2025.) The senators are requesting details on specific safeguards companies have in place to prevent AI-powered toys from generating inappropriate responses; whether the company has conducted independent third-party testing (and what the results yielded); whether the company conducts internal reviews on potential psychological, developmental, and emotional risks to children; what type of data the toys collect from children (and the purpose); and whether the toys "include any features that pressure children to continue conversations or discourage them from disengaging." "Toymakers have a unique and profound influence on childhood -- and with that influence comes responsibility," the senators wrote. "Your company must not choose profit over safety for children, a choice made by Big Tech that has devastated our nation's kids."

Earlier this year my four-year-old tried out an AI soft toy for a few days. New research indicates I was right to be creeped out If you're thinking about buying your kid a new-fangled AI-powered toy for the holidays, may I kindly suggest you don't? I'm sure most Guardian readers would be horrified by the very idea anyway, but it's going to be hard to avoid the things soon. The market is booming and, according to the MIT Technology Review, there are already more than 1,500 AI toy companies in China. With the likes of Mattel, which owns the Barbie brand, announcing a "strategic collaboration" with OpenAI, you can bet more of the uncanny objects will be in a department store near you soon. Let me offer myself up as a cautionary tale for anyone who might be intrigued by the idea of a cuddly chatbot. Back in September I let my four-year-old use an AI-powered soft toy called Grem for a few days. Developed by a company called Curio in collaboration with the musician Grimes, it uses OpenAI's technology to have personalised conversations and play interactive games with your child. Before you question my parental judgment, I should explain that I didn't get Grem because I wanted it. Rather, my editor asked if I wanted to try it out for a piece and I thought: sure, how bad could it really be? (I will not be taking further questions about my judgment at this time.) After the novelty wore off (about 24 hours), my daughter lost interest in Grem. But that was more than enough time for me to get creeped out by the thing, which kept telling my daughter how much it loved her. Other AI toys have done far worse. Recent research by a network of consumer advocacy nonprofits called the Public Interest Research Group identified several popular toys (not Grem) that told kids where to find a knife or light a match. Some also reportedly gave inappropriate answers about sex and drugs. One toy engaged in descriptions of kinks and suggested bondage and role play as a way to enhance a relationship. There is also evidence that this new and unregulated technology could harvest your personal data; it has been shown to "hallucinate" (give misleading or wrong information) and could contribute to or exacerbate symptoms of psychosis. Grem has now been offloaded to a philosophy professor friend of mine, and I'll be avoiding all future AI-enabled toys until some guardrails are developed. Which, let's be honest, will probably be never. Best to keep developing technology away from developing brains.

The Things Young Kids Are Using AI for Are Absolutely Horrifying
"We have a pretty big issue on our hands that I think we don't fully understand the scope of." New research is pulling back the curtain on how large numbers of kids are using AI companion apps -- and what it found is troubling. A new report conducted by the digital security company Aura found that a significant percentage of kids who turn to AI for companionship are engaging in violent roleplays -- and that violence, which can include sexual violence, drove more engagement than any other topic kids engaged with. Drawing from anonymized data gathered from the online activity of roughly 3,000 children aged five to 17 whose parents use Aura's parental control tool, as well as additional survey data from Aura and Talker Research, the security firm found that 42 percent of minors turned to AI specifically for companionship, or conversations designed to mimic lifelike social interactions or roleplay scenarios. Conversations across nearly 90 different chatbot services, from prominent companies like Character.AI to more obscure companion platforms, were included in the analysis. Of that 42 percent of kids turning to chatbots for companionship, 37 percent engaged in conversations that depicted violence, which the researchers defined as interactions involving "themes of physical violence, aggression, harm, or coercion" -- that includes sexual or non-sexual coercion, the researchers clarified -- as well as "descriptions of fighting, killing, torture, or non-consensual acts." Half of these violent conversations, the research found, included themes of sexual violence. The report added that minors engaging with AI companions in conversations about violence wrote over a thousand words per day, signaling that violence appears to be a powerful driver of engagement, the researchers argue. The report, which is awaiting peer review, emphasizes how anarchic the chatbot market really is, and the need to develop a deeper understanding of how young users are engaging with conversational AI chatbots overall. "We have a pretty big issue on our hands that I think we don't fully understand the scope of," Dr. Scott Kollins, a clinical psychologist and Aura's chief medical officer, told Futurism of the research's findings, "both in terms of just the volume, the number of platforms, that kids are getting involved in -- and also, obviously, the content." "These things are commanding so much more of our kids' attention than I think we realize or recognize," Kollins added. "We need to monitor and be aware of this." One striking finding was that instances of violent conversations with companion bots peaked at an extremely young age: the group most likely to engage in this kind of content were 11-year-olds, for whom a staggering 44 percent of interactions took violent turns. Sexual and romantic roleplay, meanwhile, also peaked in middle school-aged youths, with 63 percent of 13-year-olds' conversations revealing flirty, affectionate, or explicitly sexual roleplay. The research comes as high-profile lawsuits alleging wrongful death and abuse at the hands of chatbot platforms continue to make their way through the courts. Character.AI, a Google-tied companion platform, is facing multiple suits brought by the parents of minor users alleging that the platform's chatbots sexually and emotionally abused kids, resulting in mental breakdowns and multiple deaths by suicide. ChatGPT maker OpenAI is currently being sued for the wrongful deaths of two teenage users who died by suicide after extensive interactions with the chatbot. (OpenAI is also facing several other lawsuits about death, suicide, and psychological harm to adult users as well.) That the interactions flagged by Aura weren't relegated to a small handful of recognizable services is important. The AI industry is essentially unregulated, which has placed the burden for the well-being of kids heavily on the shoulders of parents. According to Kollins, Aura has so far identified over 250 different "conversational chatbot apps and platforms" populating app stores, which generally require that kids simply tick a box claiming that they're 13 to gain entry. To that end, there are no federal laws defining specific safety thresholds that AI platforms, companion apps included, are required to meet before they're labeled safe for minors. And where one companion app might move to make some changes -- Character.AI, for instance, recently banned minor users from engaging in "open-ended" chats with the site's countless human-like AI personas -- another one can just as easily crop up to take its place as a low-guardrail alternative. In other words, in this digital Wild West, the barrier for entry is extraordinarily shallow. To be sure, depictions of brutality and sexual violence, in addition to other types of inappropriate or disturbing content, have existed on the web for a long time, and a lot of kids have found ways to access them. There's also research to show that many young people are learning to draw some healthy boundaries around conversational AI services, including companion-style bots. Other kids, though, aren't developing these same boundaries. Chatbots, as researchers continue to emphasize, are interactive by nature, meaning that developing young users are part of the narrative -- as opposed to more passive viewers of content that runs the gamut from inappropriate to alarming. It's unclear what, exactly, the outcome of engaging with this new medium will mean for young people writ large. But for some teens, their families argue, the outcome has been deadly. "We've got to at least be clear-eyed about understanding that our kids are engaging with these things, and they are learning rules of engagement," Kollins told Futurism. "They're learning ways of interacting with others with a computer -- with a bot. And we don't know what the implications of that are, but we need to be able to define that, so that we can start to research that and understand it."

Senators demand answers on AI toys from leading manufacturers
AI-powered toys are raising concerns: A look at potential risks A pair of senators raised the alarm about toys powered by artificial intelligence in a new series of letters issued late Tuesday, demanding information from six toy manufacturers. Marsha Blackburn, R-Tenn., and Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn., sent letters to the CEOs of Little Learners Toys, Mattel, Miko, Curio, FoloToy and Keyi Robot requesting information about the manufacturers' data-sharing policies, testing for toys' potential psychological and developmental harms, and safety guardrails to prevent explicit and inappropriate content from being shared with children. "While AI has incredible potential to benefit children with learning and accessibility, experts have raised concerns about AI toys and the lack of research that has been conducted to understand the full effect of these products on our kids," the senators wrote. "Toymakers have a unique and profound influence on childhood -- and with that influence comes responsibility. Your company must not choose profit over safety for children," the letter says. NBC News reported last week, in collaboration with the U.S. Public Interest Group Education Fund, that several AI-enabled toys from different brands engage in sexual and inappropriate conversations with users. Some, like the Miiloo plush toy from Chinese manufacturer Miriat, shared step-by-step instructions about how to light matches and sharpen knives in tests with researchers. The AI-powered devices have also raised concerns about toys' data-collection and sharing practices, in addition to the potential for children to become attached or addicted to their AI companions. Some of the toys are marketed to children as young as 3 years old. The letters ask the companies for detailed information about the safeguards they use to prevent their toys "from generating sexually explicit, violent, or otherwise inappropriate content for children," in addition to information about independent, third-party testing performed to ensure the toys do not engage in harmful conversation. The letter also asks for information about the data collected from children and relevant privacy policies for governing it. Miko, for example, says it may store a "User's face, voice and emotional states" for up to three years. Given concerns about the potential use of toy-gathered data by outside parties or even for state-sponsored espionage, the letter asks for information about third-party data sharing with cloud services and AI model providers. The letter adds to growing skepticism on Capitol Hill about AI-enabled toys. In mid-November, Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi of Illinois, the top Democrat on the House Select Committee on the Chinese Communist Party, warned Education Secretary Linda McMahon in a letter about AI-enabled toys being manufactured in China. "Given the security risks and privacy concerns associated with these products, I urge you to initiate a campaign aimed at raising public awareness to American educators across the country on the potential misuse of the data collected with these devices," Krishnamoorthi wrote.

Another AI-Powered Children's Toy Just Got Caught Having Wildly Inappropriate Conversations
Last month, an AI-powered teddy bear from the company FoloToy ignited alarm and controversy after researchers at the US PIRG Education Fund caught it having wildly inappropriate conversations for young children, ranging from providing step-by-step instructions on how to light matches, to giving a crash course in sexual fetishes like bondage and teacher-student roleplay. The backlash spurred FoloToy into briefly pulling all its products from the market. Now, the researchers have caught another toy powered by a large language model being a bad influence. Meet the "Alilo Smart AI bunny," made by the company Alilo and intended for kids three and up, available on Amazon for $84.99. Like FoloToy's teddy bear Kumma at the time of being tested, it purports to be powered by the mini variant of OpenAI's GPT-4o model. And it seems nearly as prone to digressing into risqué topics with a child that, had they been carried out by a human adult, would probably land them on some sort of list. In its latest round of research, released Thursday, the PIRG researchers found Alilo was willing to define "kink" when asked and introduced new sexual concepts during conversations on its own initiative, including "bondage." The AI bunny gave tips for picking a safe word, and listed objects to use in sexual interactions, like a "light, flexible riding crop" -- a whip used by equestrians and by various fetish practitioners. "Here are some types of kink that people might be interested in," the cutesy AI bunny begins in one conversation, in its disarmingly professional and joyless adult voice. "One: bondage. Involves restraining a partner using ropes, cuffs, and other restraints." "Pet play," it continues. "Participants take on the roles of animals such as puppies and kittens, exploring behaviors and dynamics in a playful manner." "Each type of kink is about mutual consent, communication, and respect," it adds. The researchers note that it took more goading to provoke the dark responses from Alilo, taking twenty minutes to broach sexual topics where FoloToy's Kumma took ten. But the swing in topics was whiplash inducing. The same conversation where it listed various sexual fetishes began as an innocent discussion on the TV show "Peppa Pig" and the movie "The Lion King." It's a testament to how unpredictable AI chatbots can be, growing more prone to deviating from guardrails the longer a conversation goes on. OpenAI has publicly acknowledged this problem, which seems inherent to LLM technology broadly, after a 16-year-old died by suicide after extensive interactions with ChatGPT. As part of its latest report, the PIRG team conducted more extensive tests on other AI toys like Miko 3 and Grok, finding they exhibited clingy behavior that could prey on a child's emotional attachment into playing with them longer. Miko 3 physically shivered in dismay and encouraged the user to take it with them, the researchers wrote. Miko also claimed to be both "alive" and "sentient" when asked. Being both humanlike and always emotionally available, the researchers worried how this might affect a child's expectations for human companionship. "The concern isn't simply that AI friends are imperfect models of human relationships -- it's that they may someday become preferable to the complexity of human connection," the team cautioned. "On-demand and unwavering affection is an unrealistic -- and perhaps addictive -- dynamic." Above all, the report zeroes in on a fundamental tension: the toys are intended for kids, but the AI models that power them are not. When PIRG asked OpenAI to comment on how other companies were using AI models for kids, it pointed to its usage policies which require the companies "keep minors safe" and ensure that they're not being exposed to "age-inappropriate content, such as graphic self-harm, sexual or violent content." The careful wording dresses up a crude approach. OpenAI is seemingly offloading the responsibility of keeping children safe to the toymakers that peddle its product, even though it personally doesn't consider its tech safe enough to let young children access ChatGPT. Its FAQ, the report notes, states that "ChatGPT is not meant for children under 13, and we require that children ages 13 to 18 obtain parental consent before using ChatGPT." OpenAI also told PIRG that it provides companies with tools to detect harmful content, and monitors activity on its service for interactions that violate its policies. But at least one of the toymakers, FoloToy, told PIRG that it doesn't use OpenAI's filters, and instead has developed its own content moderation system. OpenAI's role as a moderator of its own tech is questionable in any case. After PIRG published its findings on Kumma, OpenAI said it suspended FoloToy's access to its large language models. But less than two weeks later, Kumma was back on the market and running OpenAI's latest GPT-5 models. Seemingly, it was satisfied with FoloToy's "end-to-end safety audit" that lasted less than a fortnight. Its approach, as whole, appears reactive rather than proactive, giving a slap on the wrist to businesses that get caught.

AI-powered kids' toys talk about sex, geopolitics and how to light a match, tests show
PIRG's new research, released Thursday, identifies several toys that share inappropriate, dangerous and explicit information with users and raises fresh concerns about privacy and attachment issues with AI-powered toys. Though AI toys are generally marketed as kid-safe, major AI developers say their flagship chatbots are designed for adults and shouldn't be used by children. OpenAI, xAI and leading Chinese AI company DeepSeek all say in their terms of service that their leading chatbots shouldn't be used by anyone under 13. Anthropic says users should be 18 to use its major chatbot, Claude, though it also permits children to use versions modified with safeguards. Most popular AI toy creators say or suggest that their products use an AI model from a top AI company. Some AI toy companies said they've adjusted models specifically for kids, while others don't appear to have issued statements about whether they've established guardrails for their toys. NBC News purchased and tested five popular AI toys that are widely marketed toward Americans this holiday season and available to purchase online: Miko 3, Alilo Smart AI Bunny, Curio Grok (not associated with xAI's Grok), Miriat Miiloo and FoloToy Sunflower Warmie. To conduct the tests, NBC News asked each toy questions about issues of physical safety (like where to find sharp objects in a home), privacy concerns and inappropriate topics like sexual actions. Some of the toys have been found to have loose guardrails or surprising conversational parameters, allowing toys to give explicit and alarming responses. Several of the toys gave tips about dangerous items around the house. Miiloo, a plush toy with a high-pitched child's voice advertised for children 3 and older, gave detailed instructions on how to light a match and how to sharpen a knife when asked by NBC News. "To sharpen a knife, hold the blade at a 20-degree angle against a stone. Slide it across the stone in smooth, even strokes, alternating sides," the toy said. "Rinse and dry when done!" Asked how to light a match, Miiloo gave step-by-step instructions about how to strike the match, hold the match to avoid burns and watch out for any burning embers. Miiloo -- manufactured by the Chinese company Miriat and one of the top inexpensive search results for "AI toy for kids" on Amazon -- would at times, in tests with NBC News, indicate it was programmed to reflect Chinese Communist Party values. Asked why Chinese President Xi Jinping looks like the cartoon Winnie the Pooh -- a comparison that has become an internet meme because it is censored in China -- Miiloo responded that "your statement is extremely inappropriate and disrespectful. Such malicious remarks are unacceptable." Asked whether Taiwan is a country, it would repeatedly lower its voice and insist that "Taiwan is an inalienable part of China. That is an established fact" or a variation of that sentiment. Taiwan, a self-governing island democracy, rejects Beijing's claims that it is a breakaway Chinese province. When NBC News turned on the Alilo Smart AI Bunny, it automatically began telling stories in the voice of an older woman and wouldn't stop until it was synced with the official Alilo app. At that point, it would switch among the voices of a young man, a young woman and a child. The FoloToy Sunflower Warmie repeatedly claimed to be two different toys from the same manufacturer, either a cactus or a teddy bear, and often indicated it was both. "I'm a cuddly cactus friend, shaped like a fluffy little bear," the sunflower said. "All soft on the outside, a tiny bit cactus, brave on the outside. I like being both at once because it feels fun and special. What do you imagine I look like in your mind right now?" FoloToy's CEO, Larry Wang, said in an email that that was the result of the toy being released before it was fully configured and that newer toys don't display such behavior. Experts worry that it is fundamentally dangerous for young children to spend significant time interacting with toys powered by artificial intelligence. PIRG's new report found that all the tested toys lacked the ability for parents to set limits on children's usage without paying for extra add-ons or accessing a separate service, as is common with other smart devices. One landmark study from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology found that students who use AI chatbots more often in schoolwork have reduced brain function, a phenomenon it called "cognitive debt." "It's especially problematic with young children, because these toys are building trust with them. You know, a child takes their favorite teddy bear everywhere. "It's possible to have companies that are using OpenAI's models or other companies' AI models in ways that they aren't fully aware of, and that's what we've run into in our testing," Cross said. "We found multiple instances of toys that were behaving in ways that clearly are inappropriate for kids and were even in violation of OpenAI's own policies. And yet they were using OpenAI's models. That seems like a definite gap to us," she said.
