iOS 27 Will Reportedly Skip Major Upgrades, Focus on Refinements
Apple is slowing down on flashy new iOS features and focusing on improving everything that's already out, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reports. This year's WWDC signaled a major shift across Apple's software lineup. Alongside new features, the company introduced the Liquid Glass interface with floating, translucent navigation bars and changed the naming to reflect release years instead of version numbers, similar to how carmakers go about their models. While the refreshed design became a major talking point at launch in September, several users complained about bugs, quick battery drains, and other issues soon after. Some are still complaining about issues such as keyboard inaccuracies. Since it was an intensive software revision, Apple's engineering and software teams are now "hunting for bloat to cut, bugs to eliminate, and any opportunity to meaningfully boost performance and overall quality," Gurman writes in the latest edition of his weekly newsletter. This means, instead of working on sweeping new features for iOS 27, Apple may be focusing on fixing iOS 26's underlying performance and quality issues, much like it did with the Snow Leopard update for Macs in 2009, Gurman adds. However, that won't leave iOS 27 as a "no new features" update like the Mac software. There will still be a few additions, and most of them will revolve around AI so that the company doesn't fall further behind in this segment, Gurman notes. Notably, Apple has yet to release several AI features it announced at WWDC 24. The company has said they will arrive in 2026, and rumors suggest they could finally roll out with iOS 26.4. Apple's also rumored to be working on integrating Google Gemini into Apple Intelligence and Siri, while also infusing AI into some of its other apps. It is also rumored to be working on an AI-powered search tool that could rival both ChatGPT, its current AI partner for Apple Intelligence, and Perplexity.

iOS 27 will reportedly focus on performance improvements and AI upgrades
After years of introducing major changes with its annual iOS releases, Apple may be altering its approach next time around, instead focusing on refinement over a bevy of flashy new features. According to Mark Gurman in this week's Power On newsletter, for iOS 27, Apple is "focused on improving the software's quality and underlying performance." That, and beefing up its AI offerings. On the heels of iOS 26, which brought the Liquid Glass design overhaul, and the trickle of underbaked AI features that have arrived since the rollout of Apple Intelligence last year, Apple is reportedly honing in to improve the experience. Gurman writes that "engineering teams are now combing through Apple's operating systems, hunting for bloat to cut, bugs to eliminate, and any opportunity to meaningfully boost performance and overall quality." Gurman compares the strategy to 2009's Snow Leopard release for Mac, which focused on bug fixes, decluttering and efficiency. Catching up on AI is a major priority as well, the report notes. The company is working on an AI web search tool and an Apple Intelligence overhaul, alongside plans to integrate its AI into more apps. We still have yet to see the smarter, more personal AI-powered Siri the company has been talking about since 2024, but that's expected to arrive before iOS 27 -- possibly with iOS 26.4 this coming spring, according to Gurman.

iOS 27 new features: Everything we know so far - 9to5Mac
The first rumors about what to expect from next year's iOS 27 update are here. The update will reportedly bring a focus on stability improvements and bug fixes, with some big new Apple Intelligence features sprinkled in. Here's everything we know so far about new iOS 27 features, the update's release date, and more. Apple will announce iOS 27 at WWDC in June. Apple typically holds its Worldwide Developers Conference in the first or second week of June. The update will be announced during the event and subsequently released in beta testing for developers. Here's when Apple has held WWDC over the last five years: An iOS 27 public beta will then be released in July 2026, allowing iPhone users to try new features and give feedback to Apple. If all goes according to plan, iOS 27 will then be released to the general public in September. Here are the release dates for major iOS updates over the last five years: Bloomberg reports that Apple's primary focus with iOS 27 will be on "quality and underlying performance." This comes after several years of massive iOS updates, including the launch of Apple Intelligence with iOS 18 and the dramatic Liquid Glass redesign with iOS 26. Mark Gurman says that Apple engineers are "combing through Apple's operating systems" looking for bloat to cut and bugs to fix, along with "any opportunity to meaningfully boost performance and overall quality." The idea is to take a step back after the last several significant iOS updates and lay the groundwork for a new wave of major updates going forward. Think of it as a sort of reset. One aspect of iOS 27 will be optimizing the software platform for Apple's first foldable iPhone, which is set to launch in September 2026. The foldable iPhone is set to have an approximately 7.8-inch inner display and a 5.5-inch outer display. Apple will need to make changes to iOS 27 to accommodate that new form factor, as well as add new features to take advantage of the larger screen. Bloomberg says Apple will "prioritize software features tailored specifically to this new form factor. There's no word on what new features Apple will add to iOS 27 for the iPhone Fold, but I'd bet on some new windowing and multitasking features to take the stage here. Finally, as has become tradition, iOS 27 will include new Apple Intelligence features. Apple is reportedly working on a new AI-powered platform for the Health app. According to Bloomberg, Apple wants to "replicate" your real doctor using an AI agent that utilities data from the Health app on your iPhone. The idea is that the Health app already has a trove of data about you, especially if you wear an Apple Watch. With this new AI platform, Apple hopes to give users more insight into what all of those metrics mean. The updated Health app will also reportedly include videos explaining health trends to users. Second, Apple is continuing its work on an AI-powered web search platform that could ship as part of iOS 27. Internally, this platform is referred to as Apple's World Knowledge Answers platform. This will be a new platform designed to rival AI search features from companies like Perplexity. Of course, the important thing to remember is that we're still seven months away from Apple officially announcing iOS 27. There's plenty of time for things to change, and Apple might scrap some of these features or add new ones. We'll keep this story updated as the rumors progress. I'm skeptical of whether Apple will truly be able focus on squashing bugs and making stability improvements in iOS 27 while simultaneously continuing work on Apple Intelligence and optimizing the update for the biggest change ever to the iPhone form factor. If it's able to pull that off, I'll be quite impressed. What's on your wishlist for iOS 27? Are there any new features you want Apple to add? Let us know down in the comments.

iOS 27 could be Mac OS X Snow Leopard all over again
This year's major aesthetic overhaul will reportedly be followed by an update focused on stability... and AI. In various ways, this year's Apple operating system updates (iOS 26, iPadOS 26, macOS 26 and so on) represented a major departure from the past, from the new version numbering system to the radical new Liquid Glass design language. But not everyone was convinced. Liquid Glass proved controversial, so much so that Apple was forced to add a toggle to let users tone down its showy visual effects. iOS 26 and its siblings were also beset by bugs, from keyboard typos to battery drain. And this all follows the heavily AI-focused launches in 2024, which promised numerous features that would end up heavily delayed or fail to appear at all. With this background, it's perhaps not surprising to learn that 2026's launches will reportedly take a different approach. In the latest edition of his Power On newsletter, Bloomberg writer Mark Gurman reports that iOS 27 and the other OS updates next year will be what's known as maintenance releases, focusing on improving stability and performance rather than new features. He doesn't cite a source for this prediction, but usually bases his claims on anonymous reports from within the company. "For iOS 27 and next year's other major operating system updates," Gurman writes, "the company is focused on improving the software's quality and underlying performance... Engineering teams are now combing through Apple's operating systems, hunting for bloat to cut, bugs to eliminate, and any opportunity to meaningfully boost performance and overall quality." As Gurman points out, this would be reminiscent of Mac OS X Snow Leopard, the Mac update released in 2009. Much like iOS 27, this followed a major and somewhat disruptive update, in the shape of 2007's Mac OS X Leopard; rather than trying to pile on even more change, Apple chose to fix and optimize the raft of new features it already had. The slight problem is that these days, iPhone OS updates in particular are big news, generally forming the centerpiece of Apple's publicly broadcast WWDC keynote in the summer. Having to get on (virtual) stage and spend more than an hour talking about bug fixes and bloat elimination may not be an appealing prospect for Craig Federighi, who will want at least a few tentpole features to discuss. And Gurman concedes that this will probably happen. The tentpole features, inevitably, will focus on AI. Gurman says we can expect Apple's AI health agent to arrive next year, as well as AI-powered web search. With the new Siri finally expected to roll out in the spring, iOS 27 will be able to build on a firm AI foundation. Watching WWDC, one will no doubt be left with the impression that AI is the big news for 2026. But look more closely, and the evidence suggests that the real change will be more understated, and perhaps more valuable.

iOS 27 Will Reportedly Have Two Key Upgrades
iOS 27 will reportedly have two major elements: quality improvements and new AI features. In his Power On newsletter today, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman said that iOS 27 will be similar to Mac OS X Snow Leopard, in the sense that Apple is focused on improving "quality and underlying performance" over adding new features. Gurman said there is one exception to this rule, though, as he expects there to be new AI features. He said that iOS 27 will extend artificial intelligence to additional Apple apps, and he reiterated that there will be an Apple Health+ subscription service that offers personalized health recommendations and more. He said this focus on improved quality over new features also applies to macOS 27. The first betas of iOS 27, macOS 27, and other corresponding updates should be released shortly after Apple's annual developers conference WWDC next June.

Apple to focus on 'quality and underlying performance' with iOS 27 next year: report - 9to5Mac
This past year, Apple overhauled its design language across all of its major software platforms with the introduction of Liquid Glass. That dramatic redesign, coupled with a number of jam-packed released over the past couple years, has resulted in many Apple users complaining about the overall quality of Apple software. According to today's Power On newsletter, Apple might finally be stepping back from new features, and instead focusing on underlying performance improvements. Let's discuss. Per Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, Apple is taking a step back from launching any major new software features at WWDC26. This applies to iOS 27 and macOS 27, as well as all of the companies smaller platforms, like watchOS, tvOS, and visionOS. For the first time since iOS 12, Apple will be focusing on software quality, rather than flashy new features: Aiming to improve the software, engineering teams are now combing through Apple's operating systems, hunting for bloat to cut, bugs to eliminate, and any opportunity to meaningfully boost performance and overall quality. Like Snow Leopard set the groundwork for future overhauls and new types of Macs, iOS 27 will lay the foundation for foldable iPhones and other new hardware. Apple won't quite launch 'zero new features' like they claimed with OS X Snow Leopard back in 2009, however. According to Gurman, Apple still plans to release a number of new AI features with iOS 27, so the company doesn't fall behind in the AI race. Currently, two major AI features are expected for iOS 27: Apple's new AI health agent, launching alongside a potential Apple Health+ subscription, as well as the companies first AI-powered web search project. Outside of the heavy focus on software quality and other AI enhancements, Gurman also outlines three additional things to look out for with iOS 27:
[7]
Apple prepares a system-wide code cleanup in iOS 27 to pave the way for AI
Apple is reportedly planning a strategic shift for its next major operating system update, iOS 27, prioritizing system stability and performance refinement over the introduction of flashy new features. According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman in his Power On newsletter, the tech giant aims to replicate the strategy used for the 2009 Mac OS X Snow Leopard release, which focused on "under-the-hood" improvements rather than visual changes. Engineering teams are currently combing through the software to remove bloat, fix bugs, and significantly boost underlying performance. This move follows the release of iOS 26, which brought the major "Liquid Glass" design overhaul, and the staggered rollout of Apple Intelligence features. Despite the focus on refinement, Apple plans to continue expanding its artificial intelligence capabilities. The report indicates the company is working on an overhaul of Apple Intelligence, a new AI-based web search tool, and deeper integration of AI across its apps. The long-awaited, smarter version of Siri is expected to arrive before iOS 27, likely launching with the iOS 26.4 update this coming spring.
[8]
Apple's Next iOS Updates Will Address 1 of the Company's Biggest Weaknesses
Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman wrote that iOS 27, the next annual update to Apple's iPhone and iPad software, will be somewhat less sprawling than previous updates, and will focus on two major themes: quality improvements and artificial intelligence features. This year, Apple released iOS 26, an update that brought with it a major visual redesign of the iPhone operating system. Apple refers to it as "Liquid Glass." New features included a call recording button, polls in text messages, and a smattering of AI features, including "visual intelligence," a button that enables users to ask questions about the content on their phone's screen, and the ability to translate text messages. Apple's next software update likely won't contain many major new features, according to Gurman. That's in part because, as Gurman writes, "many users" have reported problems when using iOS 26, such as "device overheating, unexplained battery drain, user interface glitches, keyboard failures, cellular connectivity snags and app crashes."

iOS 27 Could Arrive With These Notable Features, Improvements in 2026
* Apple could release the first iOS 27 beta after WWDC 2026 * Apple is expected to unveil iOS 27 at its developer conference * The company has yet to confirm the features Apple unveiled its revamped user interface for iOS 26, alongside new Liquid Glass design elements, during its annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC 2025), which was hosted by the company in June. Similarly, the Cupertino tech giant is expected to unveil new features coming to iOS 27, at its next WWDC keynote. According to details shared by Bloomberg's Mark Gurman in his weekly Power On newsletter, the iPhone-maker is planning some "major" changes for the purported software update, including new AI features and user experience improvements. Apple's iOS 27 Will Reportedly Bring New AI Features Gurman writes that the Cupertino tech giant's next major firmware update for iPhone models, which is expected to be called iOS 27, will focus on two specific areas of the mobile operating system, including quality improvements and Apple Intelligence features. Citing iOS 26 issues that mar the user experience, like overheating, battery drain, UI glitches, "keyboard failures", cellular connectivity issues and frequent app crashes, the journalist said that Apple's engineers have begun "combing" through the OS to reduce bloat and resolve known bugs, while attempting to "meaningfully boost performance". This is reportedly part of the US-based company's efforts to improve the quality of its mobile OS, which is also expected to arrive on its rumoured foldable phone. In terms of iOS 27 features, Apple is said to be prioritising the introduction of new AI capabilities to its smartphones, while integrating the same into additional apps. The company is said to be working on a "health-focused" AI model, which could be included in the Health+ subscription service. Expected to release in the fall of 2026, it will reportedly compete with ChatGPT and Perplexity. Moreover, the iOS 26.4 update will reportedly bring the much-anticipated AI-powered Siri. Apple is also said to be internally working on a standalone text-based AI chatbot app, dubbed Veritas. It is said to be the test bed for the "re-architected Siri". However, Apple is not planning to release the app to the public. The Cupertino tech giant is expected to unveil the iOS 27 features and redesigned UI elements during the WWDC 2026 in June next year. Apple will later start releasing the software update for eligible iPhone models in September 2026, soon after the launch of the purported iPhone Fold and iPhone 18 Pro series. Meanwhile, the first beta version of iOS 27 could be rolled out to developers for testing as soon as July.

After the big overhaul of iOS 26, next year's update will be a tune-up
Apple is planning for a modest update in iOS 27, according to report, with a view to improving the operating system After the big update of iOS 26 iPhone operating system, Apple is looking at maintenance from iOS 27 according to a new report from an in-the-know Apple reporter. Bloomberg's Mark Gurman says iOS 27 will focus on quality improvements and new AI features rather than the slew of redesigns and new features Apple has rolled out in recent releases. In his Power On newsletter published yesterday Gurman likened next year's release to the Mac OS X Snow Leopard release of 15-years ago, where there were no new features but plenty of housekeeping elements. He wrote: "Aiming to improve the software, engineering teams are now combing through Apple's operating systems, hunting for bloat to cut, bugs to eliminate, and any opportunity to meaningfully boost performance and overall quality. Like Snow Leopard set the groundwork for future overhauls and new types of Macs, iOS 27 will lay the foundation for foldable iPhones and other new hardware." In the meantime Apple continues to work to get its long-delayed AI features out of the gate. In iOS 26.4, we're expecting a new version of Siri powered by Google Gemini. In iOS 27 Apple has been preparing an AI-based health coach for Apple Health and a web search feature powered by Apple Intelligence. Plans for iOS 27 are likely to be revealed by Apple in June 2026 at the annual WWDC keynote.

Apple plans Snow Leopard-style iOS 27 overhaul focused on quality and AI: Report
Apple's next major iPhone software update, iOS 27, will highlight two central goals: quality improvements and new artificial intelligence features, according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman. The update follows last year's design-heavy iOS 26 and mirrors Apple's 2009 release of Snow Leopard, which centered on stability, cleanup, and performance instead of adding major new features. Apple is applying a similar approach to refine its platforms after several cycles of feature expansion. Although iOS 26 arrived without significant delays, many users have reported issues such as overheating, battery drain, interface glitches, keyboard failures, connectivity problems, app crashes, and general sluggishness in system animations. With iOS 27, engineering teams are reviewing system components, removing outdated code, eliminating bugs, and targeting overall performance gains. Apple views this quality-focused cycle as groundwork for future devices, including foldable iPhones. While the update's primary emphasis is on core improvements, iOS 27 is expected to include subtle refinements to the interface introduced in iOS 26. Apple has already begun making adjustments -- such as new options to customize the lock screen clock's glass styling and tint levels -- and more minor visual and usability tweaks are expected. iOS 27 will introduce several new AI capabilities. Apple is preparing a rebuilt version of Siri, with the first phase scheduled for iOS 26.4, and is expanding Apple Intelligence features into more apps. The update will also include a health-focused AI agent tied to a planned Health+ subscription and enhancements to Apple's AI-powered web search, designed to compete with services like ChatGPT and Perplexity. Internally, Apple is testing a text-based chatbot app called Veritas, which supports the redesigned Siri architecture rather than serving as a standalone consumer product. AI development spans multiple teams, including those led by Sebastien Marineau, vice president of intelligent system experience, and Mike Rockwell, who is guiding the Siri overhaul. Apple has also partnered with Google to integrate Gemini technologies into its Apple Foundation Models. With a mix of Snow Leopard-style cleanup and significant AI expansion, iOS 27 is shaping up as a foundational release for 2026. The focus on stability, performance, and deeper intelligence features extends across Apple's wider software lineup, including macOS 27, positioning the updates to support new hardware categories and long-term platform changes.
