Users during that incident received error messages stating, "Something went wrong while generating the response." That outage impacted users across the United States, particularly in major cities. ChatGPT maintains a massive global user base, estimated by OpenAI to be around 700 million monthly active users, relying on the tool for diverse tasks from content creation and coding to planning and analysis. These consecutive disruptions raise questions about infrastructure stability under heavy load. Leading up to the April 2nd outage, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman had commented on the platform's rapid growth and the resulting strain on capacity. On April 1st, he posted on X (formerly Twitter) about adding one million users in a single hour. According to Downdetector, the outage peaked on Wednesday evening, with over 2,000 reports from the United States and more than 200 from India. Most of the complaints (over 80%) were related to ChatGPT itself, while 18% of users reported issues with the website and 6% faced problems with the mobile application. This outage occurred just a day after a similar disruption on Tuesday evening, during which 1,594 users globally reported problems. At that time, 94% of the complaints were directly linked to ChatGPT, raising questions about OpenAI's ability to manage the increasing demand for its AI services.
