Use Gmail on your iPhone? A handy new Gemini-powered search tool has just gone live
Back in August, Android users got access to a new Gemini-powered feature called Gmail Q&A, available to those with a Google One AI Premium plan or a Workspace account. Now the same feature is going live for iPhone users as well. As explained in a Google blog post, the idea is you use Gemini to search through your inbox and ask questions about it. The example Google gives is "show unread emails from Jordan" but prompts like "what was I talking about with Chris?" or "tell me about the emails I've had today" work as well. "Gmail Q&A can help you answer specific questions about your emails, show you unread messages or messages from a specific sender, summarize emails about a topic in your inbox, and even answer general questions from search, all without having to leave your inbox," explains Google. Right now, the feature is only available in English. If you're not signed up to Google AI Premium ($19.99 / £18.99 / AU$32.99 a month), you need to have a Workspace account with Gemini add-ons included, and smart features and personalization turned on. If you meet the criteria for Gmail Q&A, powered by Gemini, you should see the Gemini star icon up in the top right corner of the Gmail app for Android or iOS. If you're viewing a specific email, the same icon is up at the top near the center. Tap this icon to launch Gemini, and you can start asking questions - it works in a similar way to Gemini on the web, so you can write in a natural way about anything to do with your email. Ask to see certain messages, or get summaries of conversations, or ask about the contents of emails stored in your inbox. Based on a brief bout of testing, it all works rather well. As always with AI though, it's worth double-checking important information: handily, Gemini provides a list of its sources underneath every answer, so you can tap through on these links to read the emails it's talking about. This is on top of the other Gemini features already in Gmail, such as tools to help you write or rewrite your emails. In its Gmail Q&A announcement, Google notes similar Gemini search tools will be arriving in Google Drive too in the near future.

Gmail's Gemini-powered Q&A feature comes to iOS
Gmail's Gemini-powered Q&A feature comes to iOS It was only initially available to Android users. A few months ago, Google introduced a new way to search Gmail with the help of its Gemini AI. The feature, called Gmail Q&A, lets you find specific emails and information by asking the Gemini chatbot questions. You can ask things like "What time is our dinner reservation on Saturday?" to quickly find the information you need. It was only initially available on Android devices, but now Google has started rolling it out to iPhones. In addition to being able to ask questions, you can also use the feature to find unread emails from a specific sender simply by telling Gemini to "Find unread emails by [the person's name]." You can ask the chatbot to summarize a topic you know you can find in your inbox, such as work projects that you've been on for months consisting of multiple conversations across several threads. And you can even use Gemini in Gmail to do general search queries without having to leave your inbox. To access Gemini, simply tap on the star icon at the top right corner of your Gmail app. Google says the feature could take up to 15 days to reach your devices. Take note, however, that you do need to have access to Gemini Business, Enterprise, Education, Education Premium or Google One AI Premium to be able to use it.

Gmail users on iOS can now ask Gemini questions about their emails
Select Gmail users on iOS can now chat with Google's Gemini chatbot about their inbox directly within the app, the company announced this week. The feature, which is called Gmail Q&A, was first rolled out to Android users back in August. Now, it's available on iOS to Google One AI Premium subscribers or Google Workspace accounts with Gemini Business, Enterprise, Education, or Education Premium add-ons. The feature can help you answer specific questions about your emails, such as, "How much did the company spend on the last marketing event?" You can ask Gemini to show you unread messages from a specific sender and summarize emails about a topic in your inbox. For instance, you can state things like "Catch me up on the emails about quarterly planning." Google says that to start, Gmail Q&A can find information from your inbox, but in the future, it will also be able to find information from your Drive. Gmail's traditional search bar isn't going away, but now the Gemini button will be added next to the search bar. The idea behind the feature is to get people to use AI when trying to find specific information from their emails, rather than traditionally searching for certain emails. It's unlikely that Gmail Q&A will be available to free Gmail users anytime soon, considering that Google is marketing features like Gmail Q&A to convince people to sign up for its monthly subscriptions. These features are likely Google's best chance at generating revenue through Gemini. Like almost every other tech company, Google has added AI features to its existing products, including Google Docs, Gmail, Google Calendar, and more. The feature expansion comes a day after Gmail introduced revamped "summary cards" to help you better organize your inbox and do things like track packages, check-in for flights, set reminders, mark bills as paid, and more all within the email app. By rolling out these new updates to its email service, Google is ensuring that its product remains competitive, as Apple introduced several Gmail-like features to its Mail app with iOS 18.

Google Gemini can search work accounts in iOS Gmail
After initially adding Gemini AI-based searches to Google Workspace Gmail on Android, it's now being brought to iOS, as Google continues to build its lead on Apple Intelligence. In August, Google added a feature that allowed Google Workspace accounts to take advantage of the tech giant's Gemini AI services in Gmail. Now, that functionality is being made available on devices like the iPhone and iPad. Available on Google Workspace accounts, Gmail Q&A will let users make queries about the contents of their inbox, with Gemini answering prompts. The Google Workspace blog explains this can include things like viewing all unread emails or messages from a specific sender. Gemini can also summarize emails about topics brought up in the inbox, along with other more complex queries. Users could also use Gemini to answer other more general queries, without needing to navigate to their browser. Google adds that, while it will start with the user's inbox at first, it plans to expand Gemini to answering queries about the account's Google Drive space in the future. The rollout to iOS Google Workspace users is taking place over the course of 15 days. It is being made available to Google Workspace customers with the Gemini Business, Enterprise, Education, Education Premium, or Google One AI Premium add-ons. Administrators for a domain will have to enable smart features and personalization from the Admin console for it to work. End users can tap the black Gemini star in the top-right of the app, or from a "Summarize this email" button. The Gemini changes fall into the playbook Google revealed during this summer's I/O developer conference. At the time, it said it would make Gemini understand more complex user inputs, including images and the context of their contents, and context-aware capabilities. The addition of the features to iOS brings Google's Gemini in more direct competition with Apple Intelligence, Cupertino's attempt to enter the AI marketplace. Apple Intelligence offers many features, including contextual understanding and summarization of communications, which Gemini also performs within Gmail. However, Apple's version uses onboard processing as much as possible, while Google instead has to rely on cloud-based processing, which is inherently less secure. WIth the rollout of the feature to iOS, Google is bringing these Gemini-based functions to iOS quicker than Apple can. Apple Intelligence is currently being beta-tested as part of the iOS 18.1 update, which is intended to be released to the public later this fall.

Gmail Q&A now on Android, iOS as 'new way of searching your inbox' [U]
At I/O 2024, Google announced a Gmail Q&A feature that brings the Gemini side panel available on desktop web to Android. This is now officially rolling out. Update 10/4: Gmail Q&A is now rolling out to iOS. The Gemini interface is near identical to Android, with the rest of the app still not using Material 3. Original 8/29: The search bar in Gmail for Android shrinks to allow for a Gemini sparkle next to your profile avatar. This Gemini "How can I help you today?" sheet features suggestions and lets you enter a full prompt. You can expand this panel to take up the entire screen. You can ask Gemini questions about your inbox or to do things like find specific details in your emails, show you unread messages, view messages from a specific sender, or summarize emails about a topic in your inbox. Something like "Show unread emails from today/week" will essentially run a search with the appropriate filters set. Results open directly in the app, with Google positioning Gmail Q&A as a "new way of searching your inbox." In the future, you will be able to see Google Drive information here. Meanwhile, the Gemini button also appears in the toolbar when you open an email. It's positioned to the left of archive, which is unfortunate for muscle memory. This slides up another sheet to enter a prompt or use one of the suggestions. You can also access that panel for follow-ups from the "Summarize this email" button. Gmail Q&A has a per-session history, with the ability to "Clear history" in the corner. This was first previewed at I/O 2024 and entered broader Workspace Labs testing earlier this month. Google is now ready to launch this feature to personal accounts subscribed to Google One AI Premium, and those with Gemini Business, Enterprise, Education, or Education Premium. This Android rollout of Gmail Q&A is starting today and will be fully available in the coming weeks. Gmail Q&A is "coming soon" to the iOS app.

Gmail for iOS gets an AI assistant to help manage your inbox
Google is rolling out iOS support for its Gmail Q&A feature, which gives users a Gemini-powered AI assistant to help manage their inbox. The Gemini side panel for Gmail was introduced to web and Android devices earlier this year, and can potentially provide an easier way to locate specific information that's buried within emails and Google Drive. Users can ask the Gmail chatbot questions about the contents of their inbox or connected Google Drive, such as finding lost contact information or company data. The Gmail Q&A feature can summarize emails around a particular topic, surface unread messages or emails from a specific sender, and answer general questions from Google search directly within the inbox. Like the web and Android versions, the Gmail Q&A feature on iOS is only available to Google One AI Premium subscribers, or Google Workspace accounts with Gemini Business, Enterprise, Education, or Education Premium add-ons. Google says it's rolling out to those groups now, but it may take a couple of weeks to appear.

Gmail's Q&A Feature Is Now Rolling Out on iOS: Here's How to Use It
The Gmail feature can answer specific questions about emails Gmail Q&A, an artificial intelligence (AI) feature that lets users ask questions about their emails, was first rolled out to the web version of the platform earlier this year. It was then added to the Android app in August, letting eligible users access the capability on the go. At the time, Google stated that the feature would soon be rolled out to iOS devices as well. On Thursday, the tech giant finally introduced Gmail Q&A to iPhone users with compatible iOS versions. The tech company announced the rollout the Gmail Q&A feature to iOS devices on Thursday, revealing that it is only available to Google Workspace users who have signed into their account on the device. This is also the case on Android, where users will need an eligible subscription to use the feature. Workspace users must be subscribed to either Gemini Business, Enterprise, Education, Education Premium or Google One AI Premium plans in order to access the functionality. The Gmail Q&A feature that is rolling out on iOS allows users to have a conversation with the Gemini-powered chatbot while gaining insights into the emails in their inbox. Users can ask AI some specific questions about their emails, ask it to show unread messages, show emails from a particular sender, summarise emails about a common topic, and seek vague details from a specific email. The feature can answer all of this while holding a friendly conversation. To use the feature, users will need to tap on the black Gemini star (or the sparkle icon) at the top right of the app. Alternatively, users can tap on the "summarise this email" chip when inside an email thread. Users can also ask Gmail Q&A vague questions such as "What was the theme of the last office party?" and Gemini will be able to find it by looking through the inbox. The feature currently only supports the English language. The feature has currently been rolled out but it can take up to 15 days before users can see its visibility on the Gmail app.

The iOS Gmail app is getting Gemini before Apple Intelligence even launches
Apple has been caught on the backfoot again as Google has brought a popular Gemini-based feature to the iOS Gmail app. Google introduced Google Q&A for Google Workspace accounts back in August. This feature lets users ask questions about their inbox that Google Gemini will then answer for them. For instance, Gemini will be able to show you unread emails or present messages from a specific sender. The Google Q&A feature can also summarize emails about a certain topic, all without having to leave the app. It seems that Google isn't content to leave this feature on the best Android phones, as a recent blog post (via Apple Insider) has revealed that Googe Q&A is coming to iOS devices. Not only that, but it seems that Google intends to expand Gemini's functionality and have it be capable of answering questions about Google Drive in the future. All of this will be rolling out in the next few days to Google Workspace customers with the Gemini Business, Enterprise, Education, Education Premium or Google One AI Premium add-ons. This move by Google now puts Gemini in direct competition with Apple Intelligence, which isn't even out yet. However, Apple Intelligence has a built-in advantage in that it can prioritize onboard processing, rather than having to use the cloud like Google. This means that Apple's AI would be faster, and arguably safer for users. While Apple Intelligence seems to be in a perpetual state of "coming soon" there is plenty to look forward to. If you have had the chance to try out the iOS 18.1 public beta then you would have had a chance to use some of the new features for any compatible iPhone. For instance, there's a Photo Clean Up tool and a much improved Siri. The new Beta also gives you summaries in the Mail app, including its own version of Smart Replies, a feature that Google recently improved thanks to Gemini. Apple Intelligence vs Google Gemini is a conflict that was always going to happen. And Google just put even more pressure on its main rival.

This New AI Feature Available for the Gmail App Actually Sounds Useful
YouTube Shorts Are About to Get Three Times Longer to Take Up Even More of Your Time AI technology is almost everywhere these days. The problem is, in many cases, it doesn't actually make the service or app better. But Google is further rolling out a new Gemini feature for the Gmail app that actually sounds great. Use Gmail Q&A to Ask Questions About Your Inbox After being rolled out starting in August on Android, the Gmail Q&A is beginning to arrive in the Gmail iOS app. It's available for Google Workspace customers with Gemini Business, Enterprise, Education, Education Premium, or Google One AI Premium. The feature is only available in English. You can tap Google's AI Gemini to answer a number of questions. For example, you can ask specific questions about emails, show unread or all messages from a specific person, summarize emails about a topic, and answer general questions from search. To find the feature, you will need to select the black Gemini star at the top right of the app or select the summarize this email chip. In the future, along with Gmail, the feature will also be able to find information from your Google Drive as well. The new AI feature won't take the place of the search bar, so you can still find information that way as well. Making Gmail Easier to Manage Email is an annoyance of today's modern life. It never seems like there is enough time in the day to tackle the huge deluge of information in my Gmail box. While it's far from perfect, Gmail Q&A actually sounds like a useful feature that can help better understand what's in your inbox and what's most important. It's nice to see Google actually use AI for something useful. It's definitely better than Google's ridiculed AI Overview. If you're using Gmail on the desktop, make sure to see our tips on how to further use Gemini and to streamline your productivity. Earlier this week, Google announced a new look for the Gmail summary cards that provide relevant information. Along with the redesign, cards will be dynamic so you can see the most relevant information. Cards will be available for purchases, events, bills, and travel.
