HP's Omen Max 16 uses AI to optimise your game performance | Stuff
With AMD, Intel and Nvidia all launching beefy new mobile chips at this year's CES, I can totally believe HP when it says the new Omen Max 16 is its most powerful gaming laptop ever. The 16in monster also has two clever ways of maintaining that performance over time - one using AI, and one using a "so simple why doesn't everyone do it" mechanical trick. It doesn't look all that different from the outgoing Omen 16, but goes all-out on RGB with a colour-changing light bar at the front of the laptop and a per-key illuminated keyboard. Internally, the Max adds a vapour chamber and uses liquid metal thermal compound to maximise its cooling potential. That'll keep the AMD Ryzen AI 9 HX 375 or Intel Core Ultra 9 275HX processors tamed while under heavy load, and ensures the Nvidia RTX 5080 GPU can pump out frames. The clever bit is how the internal fans will sometimes spin backwards, letting the Omen Max 16 blow any accumulated dust out. As someone who hasn't ever opened his laptop to blow out the cobwebs, this could be a game changer for temperatures - if it works, of course. HP has tasked its new Omen AI app to help out on the software side, changing system settings based on your specific hardware setup. Game optimisers are nothing new, so it'll be interesting to see how this one differs; only Counter Strike 2 is supported at launch, which on a maxed-out rig like the Omen Max 16 shouldn't need anything other than knocking every detail slider to the highest setting - but maybe it'll come into its own in the future as games get even more demanding. Other hardware is suitably top tier, with up to 64GB of DDR5 memory, 2TB of NVMe storage, and a beefy 83Whr battery. While the 16in screen starts with a 165Hz Full HD IPS panel, you can splash out on a 2560×1600, 240Hz OLED with Nvidia G-sync adaptive refresh. Connectivity is extensive, with two Thunderbolt 4 USB-C ports, two 40Gbps USB-Cs, two USB-As, an HDMI 2.1 output, Ethernet and a 3.5mm combo port. I'm also a big fan of the built-in wireless receiver, which lets you hook up a HyperX wireless mouse, keyboard and headset without needing to plug in a dongle. The HP Omen 16 Max will go on sale in the next few months, with prices set to start from $1700 - though expect to pay a lot more if you want one with all the bells and whistles.

Most Powerful HP Omen Gaming Laptop Ever Has Clever Ways to Stay Cool and Clean
More than two decades experience writing about PCs and accessories, and 15 years writing about cameras of all kinds. With the new Nvidia GeForce RTX 50-series graphics chips finally revealed, a flurry of gaming laptops was announced at CES 2025 taking advantage of the tech. That included an updated flagship from HP's gaming brand, the Omen Max 16. The 16-inch laptop starts at $1,700 and is just over an inch thick but has high-performance components and a choice of three displays, making it fit for creators and gamers. To keep performance as fast as possible, HP used a hybrid thermal paste called Cryo Compound, a blend of liquid metal and metal grease. Combined with the company's Tempest Cooling system that increases airflow, you can expect better gaming and less thermal throttling. Also, since dirty fans are an enemy of efficient cooling, HP implemented a simple solution to help keep dust collection down: the laptop will occasionally run the fans in reverse for a bit to prevent dust buildup. Of course, what would a laptop announcement be these days if it didn't include some mention of AI. Not only can the laptop be powerful enough to help develop and use AI, HP added some of its own to help fine-tune your gaming experience: Omen AI. With a single click, it can scan your PC and recommend system, OS and game settings to get you the fastest frame rates and optimize performance. And it learns over time, so it will continue to get you the best-personalized settings. It's currently in beta and only supports Counter-Strike 2, but HP says it will add more titles. The laptop also just looks fantastic. It has a gaming laptop vibe still, especially with its RGB keyboard lights and an optional light bar in front. But its clean lines and discreet venting keep things pretty tame, so it won't look too out of place in an office. It'll be available in gray-black, but the ceramic white I saw makes a strong impression.

Different models come with varying numbers of cores and threads, catering to different needs. The graphics options have next-gen NVIDIA GeForce laptop GPUs, including the GeForce RTX 4050 with 6 GB of GDDR6 memory. The system can be set up with either 16 GB or 32 GB of dual-channel memory, with speeds of 5600 MT/s or 5200 MT/s using DDR5. You can choose between a 512 GB or 1 TB PCIe Gen4 NVMe M.2 solid-state drive for storage. Close ✕ Remove Ads You can also choose from 16-inch screens with resolutions between 2K (1920 x 1200) and WQXGA (2560 x 1600). The refresh rates range from 60 Hz to 240 Hz, and some screens have a quick response time of just 3 milliseconds. Certain models also support Variable Refresh Rate and have IPS technology, a slim design around the edges, an anti-glare layer, and options to reduce blue light. The other two laptops are pretty powerful, too. The Omen Max 16 is a high-end gaming laptop with powerful processor options like Intel Core Ultra and AMD Ryzen AI, along with NVIDIA GeForce graphics. It can have up to 64GB of DDR5 RAM and fast PCIe storage, plus it offers excellent display choices, including OLED screens with high refresh rates. It also includes useful features like Thunderbolt 4, Wi-Fi 7, and customizable RGB backlighting. ✕ Remove Ads On the other hand, the Victus 15 is a more affordable gaming laptop. It comes with AMD Ryzen or Intel Core processors and can have either NVIDIA GeForce or AMD Radeon graphics. It offers up to 16GB of RAM and PCIe storage. While it doesn't have all the high-end features of the Omen, it still delivers good gaming performance with a 144Hz display. HP's Omen Max 16 gaming laptop has a unique cooling system I can't believe nobody thought of before
HP just announced the latest Omen Max 16 gaming laptop, a next-generation machine with the latest Intel Core Ultra 9 and AMD Ryzen AI 9 processors, up to 64GB RAM, and RTX 50-Series graphics cards. But I'm more interested in the cooling system. As components get more powerful, they need increasingly sophisticated tech to keep them running smoothly. Most of the best gaming laptops employ Vapor Chamber thermal pads as well as a robust system of fans and vents to keep airflow moving, but these machines last a long time - and dust often undoes all that hard work pretty quickly. So what did HP decide to do? The HP Omen Max 16 periodically reverses its fans to dissipate dust, preventing build up and keeping that system running efficiently for far longer. That's on paper, anyway - I've yet to see it in action. It's such a simple solution I can't believe nobody's done it before. Unless they have, and found out it doesn't work. Regardless, on a show floor obsessed with graphics card upgrades and AI integrations, it's refreshing to see a brand focusing on innovations in other build aspects that we know contribute significantly to performance without the brute force of a whole new set of components. Overall, the rig is HP's most powerful Omen gaming laptop to date. Configuration options span CPUs including the AMD Ryzen AI 9 HX 375, AMD Ryzen AI 7 350, Intel Core Ultra 9 275HX, and Intel Core Ultra 7 255HX, with between 16GB and 64GB DDR5-5600 RAM. Cheaper specs can ship with 512GB SSDs, but there's also space for larger 2TB options as well. Meanwhile the display tops it all off with a QHD+ OLED 240Hz panel running with 500 nit HDR in full edge-to-edge glass. That's a screen built for the very top spec, with cheaper IPS panels at both QHD+ and FHD+ resolutions. Alongside the Max 16, HP also announced its new Omen AI Beta program. It's a piece of software that promises to optimize your system's settings with specific presets based on your own gameplay and hardware. I'm less convinced on this one at the moment. At launch, Counter Strike 2 is the only compatible game, but I'm more than happy to be proved wrong should HP fill this library with a strong supply of titles.
