An international research team uses AI and statistical modeling to analyze the first nine books of the Hebrew Bible, revealing distinct writing styles and likely authorship of debated chapters.

AI Unveils Hidden Patterns in Biblical Texts

In a groundbreaking study published in PLOS One, an international team of researchers has employed artificial intelligence (AI) and statistical modeling to uncover hidden language patterns in the Hebrew Bible. The study, which focused on the first nine books known as the Enneateuch, has shed new light on the long-debated question of biblical authorship 1.

Novel AI Approach to Ancient Texts

The research team, led by Shira Faigenbaum-Golovin, assistant research professor of Mathematics at Duke University, developed a custom AI-based statistical model to analyze subtle variations in word usage across biblical texts. This innovative approach was necessitated by the unique challenges posed by ancient texts, which have been edited and re-edited over time, often leaving only short segments of original wording 1.

Distinguishing Scribal Traditions

The AI analysis revealed three distinct scribal traditions or writing styles spanning the Enneateuch. By examining simple and common words such as "no," "which," or "king," the model accurately identified differences between these traditions. Thomas Römer, a team member from the Collège de France, noted, "We found that each group of authors has a different style -- surprisingly, even regarding simple and common words" 1.

Testing and Applying the Model

To validate their approach, the team selected 50 chapters from the first nine books of the Bible, each previously allocated by biblical scholars to one of the identified writing styles. The model successfully compared these chapters and proposed a quantitative formula for allocating each to one of the three writing styles 1.

Insights into Debated Authorship

The researchers then applied their model to chapters of the Bible whose authorship was more contentious. By comparing these chapters to each of the three writing styles, the model determined the most likely group of authors. Importantly, the AI also provided explanations for its decisions, specifying the words or phrases that led to the allocation of a given chapter to a particular writing style 1.

Surprising Discoveries

One unexpected finding emerged from the analysis of the Ark Narrative in the Books of Samuel. Despite addressing the same theme, the text in 1 Samuel did not align with any of the three identified corpora, while the chapter in 2 Samuel showed affinity with the Deuteronomistic History (Joshua to Kings) 1.

Implications Beyond Biblical Studies

The study's methodology has potential applications beyond biblical research. Faigenbaum-Golovin suggested that the same technique could be used to analyze other historical documents, such as determining the authenticity of texts attributed to historical figures like Abraham Lincoln 1.

A New Paradigm for Ancient Text Analysis

Israel Finkelstein, head of the School of Archaeology and Maritime Cultures at the University of Haifa, summarized the significance of the study: "The study introduces a new paradigm for analyzing ancient texts" 1. This innovative approach, combining AI with traditional scholarly methods, represents a significant advancement in the field of biblical studies and ancient text analysis 2.

As the team looks to apply their methodology to other ancient texts like the Dead Sea Scrolls, this research exemplifies the potential of interdisciplinary collaboration between science and the humanities in pushing the boundaries of historical and literary analysis.
