Read full bio Taking care of our teeth is a straightforward process: brush, floss, rinse, done. But with its new CameraJet toothbrush, launched on Tuesday, Dyson wants to simplify the process. The toothbursh has an AI-powered camera that detects gaps between teeth so it can floss while you brush. "Our research has shown that people consistently miss the areas where plaque forms: the gaps between teeth," Founder and Chief Engineer James Dyson said in a press release. "We wanted to solve three fundamental problems: how to see those gaps, remove plaque and how to improve cleaning performance while brushing." A camera for capturing your pearly whites The toothbrush's camera uses a 100,000-pixel macro lens with a light. It's powered by the company's trademarked AI machine-learning algorithm, Gap Optical Targeting, which was trained on 470,000 dental images collected by Dyson during development. Gap Optical Targeting analyzes 28 live images per second to detect gaps between teeth within 100 milliseconds. The CameraJet's jet then shoots a burst of mouthrinse at the gap to floss it. Since the CameraJet also connects to 2.4-GHz Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, you can use the camera as an endoscope to see a live view in the brush's live-viewing or auto-jetting modes. In the app, you can also see coverage maps, guided cleaning, brushing and flossing insights and feedback. According to the press release, no images are recorded or stored on the product or in the cloud. All images remain private to the CameraJet user. How the CameraJet's jet differs In collaboration with the National University of Singapore's Faculty of Dentistry for over five years, Dyson created its own proxy plaque to test its flossing jet. Researchers found that traditional water flossers tend to use a needle-like jet that pierces a hole in plaque but doesn't remove it entirely. In contrast, the CameraJet uses a conical jet that provides wider coverage while operating at a lower pressure to remain gentle. Built with an anti-gravity tank To contain the recommended amount of mouthrinse for its jet, the CameraJet has a built-in 12.5-ml tank that delivers mouthrinse in any orientation. Unlike other water flossers that use what Dyson described in its press release as a "straw in a cup" design, this anti-gravity tank was designed to minimize air pockets that could prevent the jet from firing, especially when the device is horizontal while cleaning the back of the teeth. Baroque brush heads Every dual-bristle brush head comes with its own RFID (radio-frequency identification) tag that allows the CameraJet to detect when a brush head is connected and how many times it has been used. This helps users know when it's time to replace the brush head with a fresh one. For less noise, each brush head was also created with a sonic dampener. To keep the bristles in constant motion and prevent stalling, the CameraJet uses variable sonic oscillation, which varies the oscillation angle as you brush. This is particularly useful in areas of your mouth that are tough to access, as external lab testing found that the CameraJet's variable mode removes up to 69% more plaque than market-leading premium electric toothbrushes in hard-to-reach areas. On the toothbrush, you can choose between auto-detect and manual jetting modes, and adjust the brushing intensity. For sensitive teeth and gums, a sensitive-bristled brush head is also available. The price is on the higher side Now available on the Dyson website in ceramic ultra blue and ceramic pink, the $499 CameraJet comes with two regular brush heads, a charging dock, a charging cable and a travel case. In addition to charging the toothbrush, the dock can also refill its mouthrinse tank in three seconds. It's recommended that you use a clear, SLS-free mouth rinse and an SLS-free toothpaste with the CameraJet to prevent foam from interfering with the camera. SLS is a common foaming agent in toothpaste, shampoo and soaps. However, if you're looking for a smart toothbrush with a cleaning coach that's under $499, CNET recommends the $100 Oral-B iO Series 5 on our list of the best electric toothbrushes. Coming soon Dyson developed a proprietary non-foaming toothpaste without SLS and a low-foaming mouthrinse specifically designed for the CameraJet's jet. While no specific release date is available, Dyson said both are coming soon. The CameraJet is currently on its way to my home for testing, so I'll post a review once I find out if it's worth the price.

As the name implies, the $499 CameraJet is the first electric toothbrush to incorporate a camera into the brush head. Available starting today in ceramic blue or ceramic pink color options, it can let you inspect the inside of your mouth by livestreaming video over Wi-Fi to your phone. But the camera also works alongside an AI algorithm to detect and blast the gaps between your teeth with mouthwash. So while you're brushing, the CameraJet simultaneously takes care of flossing. That price isn't cheap, but it's also only slightly more expensive than other premium smart toothbrushes that don't have its camera-plus-spray setup. It could be worth the splurge for those of us who are bad at regularly flossing and don't like dealing with a disappointed dentist. Just below the brush head is a tiny camera with a 100,000-pixel resolution and a strobing light. The toothbrush's AI analyzes 28 live images from the camera every second as part of a feature Dyson calls Gap Optical Targeting, without storing them on the device or sending them to the cloud. Within 100 milliseconds of a gap between your teeth being detected, the CameraJet emits a cone-shaped blast of mouthwash to clean out the space. Dyson uses a wider blast than what water flossers typically employ so it can effectively remove plaque with less pressure, making the CameraJet's flossing mechanism gentler on enamel and gums The replaceable brush heads use a combination of softer outer bristles that safely clean along the gumline and stiffer inner bristles that are better at scrubbing away tooth stains. The brush head oscillates nearly 1,000 times each second while the angle of oscillation is constantly changing to improve the effectiveness of your brushing. Pricing on replacement brush heads isn't known, but each one features an RFID tag so the CameraJet can track usage and alert you when a replacement is needed every three months. To ensure its mouthwash reservoir can effectively pump no matter how the CameraJet is held -- even upside down -- instead of sticking a tube into the reservoir, there's an air bladder inside the tank that slowly inflates to fill empty space, minimize air pockets, and maintain a constant pressure. An elaborate docking station recharges the toothbrush and can automatically fill its built-in 12.5ml mouthwash reservoir in just three seconds. While the CameraJet will work with your regular toothpaste and mouthwash, Dyson also plans to sell its own non-foaming toothpaste and a low-foaming mouthwash so the toothbrush's camera can more effectively see inside your mouth.

If you're wondering why a camera is necessary, though, the answer is, partially, AI. The Dyson CameraJet has what the company calls a "100k pixel macro lens camera" mounted right under the head of the brush. That's 0.1 megapixels in more typical camera terminology, which may seem like a very small number, but it's certainly supplemented by some algorithmic effort. More specifically, 16 million lines of code and "a machine learning system trained on 470,000 dental images collected during development" are behind the computer vision targeting here. Basically, all that computing has taught the CameraJet how to identify the gaps between your teeth. When you brush and the system sees a gap, it will shoot a jet of fluid in a conical shape that helps to floss while you brush. To prevent liquid from accumulating in your mouth as you move along, these bursts of mouthrinse are fired in tiny amounts. The capacity of the water tank that surrounds the neck of the brush is just 12.5ml (0.42 fluid ounces), which is just about two and a half teaspoons. According to Dyson, the CameraJet's "Gap Optical Targeting" system analyzes "28 live images per second to identify and target gaps between teeth in real time" and "within 100ms of the camera seeing a gap, the device detects and jets the gap." That camera isn't just there to tell the toothbrush where to shoot fluid. You can use the companion MyDyson app to get a better view of your mouth, especially the back of your teeth. The live-viewing feature is only available during live viewing or auto-jetting, and Dyson says no images are recorded or stored on the product or in the cloud. You can also use the app to get tips, guides and personalized feedback on how to brush better, with details on where you're already good and what areas you might be falling back on. The app also offers settings so you can tweak brushing intensity and various jetting modes. In addition to the camera, the company said it uses an "anti-gravity tank with a diaphragm pump and pressure chamber that adapt during use to deliver controlled jets in any orientation." That means no matter how you hold your toothbrush, the CameraJet should be able to pump water to your mouth, even if you're somehow upside down and pointing awkwardly at the back of your teeth. Dyson also stresses the importance of the shape of its water stream. Instead of a simple needle-shaped jet like many other water flossers, Dyson said its "fluid dynamicists spent years optimizing the profile of the jet to remove plaque more effectively." As a Singaporean, I feel inclined to mention that the company developed "its own proxy plaque through a five-year collaboration with the National University of Singapore's Faculty of Dentistry" as part of its engineering process. The result of all that work is a cone-shaped spray of fluid that Dyson says offers wider coverage to sweep and remove plaque while being propelled "at a lower pressure to be gentler on gums and enamel." As for what fluids to fill the tank with, you can choose your favorite clear mouth rinse that's SLS-free to prevent foaming. Dyson is also making its own non-foaming toothpaste and a low-foaming mouthrinse to be used with the CameraJet, so the camera can see clearly without foam blocking its view.

Dyson is entering the electric toothbrush category in the most Dyson way possible. Its first-ever toothbrush, the CameraJet, isn't just an electric toothbrush; it's designed as a way to actually get you to floss -- well, floss with water, anyway. The CameraJet's main draw is that it's a combination of a toothbrush and a waterpik, which would be interesting on its own. But to kick things up a notch, Dyson has thrown in an AI camera that can actually judge the intervals between your teeth and shoot out water at the moment you pass the gap. This ensures the water goes into those hard-to-reach crevices in order to efficiently clean your teeth. Dyson says the camera analyzes 28 live images per second, and while I didn't get to test it on real teeth, it did seem to work well on a demo pair of fake teeth that Dyson let us scrub. The titular "jet" in the CameraJet comes from a tank that's filled with mouthrinse at the top of the toothbrush and shoots out in conical streams. The cone-like stream of the jet better ensures that you can get all sides of your teeth as you go and is different from most water flossers, which shoot a "needle-like" jet, Dyson says. It's worth noting that when Dyson briefed me on the CameraJet, which I got to hold but not try for myself, they positioned the CameraJet not as a floss replacement, but as a way for most people (many of whom don't floss regularly) to get some kind of flossing in. Flossing the regular way with string floss is still the proverbial gold standard. Since this is about as overengineered as a toothbrush can get, the CameraJet also has an app and is Wi-Fi connected. What can you do with that internet connection, you ask? Well, you can use it to look at the camera via the Dyosn app in real time as you brush your teeth, of course. Dyson says the camera is "only active during live viewing or auto-jetting" and that "no images are recorded or stored on the product or in the cloud, and images remain private to the user." Thank god -- I draw the line at having my teeth data collected. Dyson says it also developed its own brush head that uses a combination of bristle types. One is slightly firmer (the inner bristles) and is meant to remove surface stains, while the outer bristles are softer and meant to clean along the gumline. The charging dock is also nifty and refills the toothbrush with rinse with a button push. As you might expect, the CameraJet doesn't come cheap -- this is a $499 toothbrush -- but there are plenty of bells and whistles to justify that price. The CameraJet is available for preorder today.
