Google expands availability of Deep Research, an AI tool that wades deep into any topic Google LLC said today it's making its experimental artificial intelligence research tool, called Deep Research, available to Gemini Advanced users via the Google Workspace platform. It's a relatively new feature that was first announced last year, which has the ability to explore complex topics and conduct intensive research about them, answering very specific questions the user might have. After scouring the internet and analyzing hundreds or even thousands of sources, it'll present its findings in a comprehensive, yet easy to read report, the company explains. The main advantage of Deep Research is that it can do in a matter of minutes what would take a human researcher multiple hours to do, and it can be useful in a range of different business and educational scenarios. For instance, Google says it's ideal for industry research, helping businesses to better understand emerging trends they need to be aware of, such as sustainable battery technologies to help inform a company's clean technology strategies. Another promising use case is competitive research. An organization could use it to perform a deep analysis of their local and global competitors, or find the ideal location for setting up a new small business, Google said. Alternatively, it can be used for customer research. So a salesperson for example could use it to create a comprehensive report on his or her company's products and services, tailored for a specific client. In addition, educators can use Deep Research for tasks such as lesson planning, class project development, presentations and grant writing, creating reports on almost any topic, Google said. At this time, Deep Research is being made exclusively available to paid Google Workspace users with access to Gemini Advanced. Google Workspace is the company's productivity suite, containing tools like Google Docs and Sheets. Gemini Advanced is the premium version of the Gemini AI application, offering support for vastly more tokens than the regular app and additional perks like more storage space. To get started with Deep Research in Google Workspace, Gemini Advanced users have to switch to the "1.5 Pro with Deep Research" model in the app, and then all they have to do is enter a simple prompt regarding the topic they wish to research in depth. Deep Research will then create a multi-step research plan that users can revise as needed, and once it's ready to go, it will immediately start analyzing the most relevant information it finds from its web search. As it works, it will refine its analysis based on what it learns. So, for example, if it's researching a new trend about clean batteries and discovers a promising new technology in that area, it will automatically dig up as much info as it can about that new tech. Once the research is done, Deep Research will generate a comprehensive report that summarizes the key findings of what it has learned. According to Google, it's presented in an easy-to-digest format with relevant links to all of the important, original sources, so users can conduct a deeper dive into different aspects if they need. In addition, users will be able to ask follow up questions and conduct even deeper research, if they desire. Google says Deep Research should be a great time saver, because conducting thorough research is a notoriously time consuming and monotonous task, and it's not something that everyone can do either, as it requires a certain degree of skill in terms of knowing what to search the web for. According to Google, it can condense hours of research into a matter of minutes on just about any topic. Deep Research is available now for Google Workspace users on the web, with mobile support coming later. At present, it's only supported in English, but the company says it will extend it to additional languages soon. Alongside Deep Research, Google also announced a couple of new experimental models in Gemini Advanced, including 2.0 Flash Thinking Experimental and 2.0 Pro Experimental, which are currently ranked as the world's second and third most powerful generative AI models respectively on Imarena's Chatbot Arena LLM Leaderboard. The 2.0 Flash Thinking Experimental model is Google's most advanced "reasoning model" thus far, and differs from traditional generative AI models in that it breaks down prompts into a series of steps to improve its reasoning abilities and deliver better responses. Uniquely, it breaks down its entire thought process, so users can trace its line of reasoning and understand the assumptions it made.

Workspace users will be able to use experimental Gemini AI models, too. Google's thoughtful AI research partner, Deep Research, is now available to Google Workspace users, Google said Thursday. And that's not all: Google Workspace users who sign up for Gemini Advanced can try other, experimental AI models, too. On Tuesday, Google announced that Gemini Advanced with Deep Research is now accessible by mobile users. On Thursday, Google migrated Gemini Advanced with Deep Research to Workspace users as well, provided that the Workspace subscription includes the extra Gemini Advanced subscription. Before this, Deep Research was only available in Gemini Advanced on the web, for $20 per month. Why use it? Google's Workspace blog suggests that a salesperson could use Gemini Advanced with Deep Research to prepare a report on a prospective client, or a teacher could use it with lesson planning -- similar to what Google said Deep Research could do when it was originally announced. Deep Research on Workspace hasn't changed its methodology, either. Before it sets out to research the problem -- which can take several minutes -- it prepares a "plan" of what it will do and where it will look. Users can then copy or otherwise incorporate Gemini Advanced's findings into a Google Docs document. Reasoned, analytical research is the hot trend in AI; earlier this month, OpenAI announced "deep research" within ChatGPT, which now uses a multi-step research process to scour the web for answers. Google actually showed off its own Deep Research for Gemini in December, part of a $20/mo Gemini Advanced service. But while OpenAI charges $200/mo for ChatGPT Pro's access to Deep Research, Perplexity.ai announced a lighter, faster version this week for free. It appears that Workspace users will receive the same version of Workspace with Deep Research that Google unveiled in December, given that a list of models Workspace will have access to links back to Google's December announcement. In addition to Deep Research, Workspace users will also have access to Gemini 2.0 Flash Thinking Experimental, announced on Feb. 5. Flash Thinking Experimental "shows its work" by breaking down the task into steps. (A second "with Apps" model can directly access YouTube and Search, but Workspace users at work or school will not have access to it.) A related Gemini 2.0 Flash Thinking Experimental "Pro" model is also available to Workspace subscribers, with better performance at math prompts. Google said separately that its Meet app would also add an AI improvement: timestamped transcripts. If Meet's AI summary references something happening during the call, it will add a timestamped reference so that you can review the actual discussion.

Taking your workload to the next level could soon get even more intelligent thanks to a new update from Google and its Gemini AI platform. The company has announced all Gemini users will now be able to upload documents to the platform and receive AI-powered improvements and customization options. But that's not all - it also revealed its Gemini Deep Research platform is arriving on certain Google Workspace tiers, giving users deeper and smarter insights to complex topics. In a post on X, Google Gemini outlined what users can expect from the new feature. To upload a file, users should tap the plus sign when asking Gemini a question, and select "files". Anyone signed up will be able to upload multiple files, including Google Docs, PDFs, and Microsoft Word word processor documents, whether stored on Google Drive or on your device. Once uploaded, users will be able to benefit from a number of features, including getting summaries, giving personalized feedback, and gaining actionable insights, all of which Google says can streamline your workflows and save you time. The feature is limited to documents for now, however users with a Gemini Advanced subscription can still upload spreadsheets or code files. Elsewhere, following a wider consumer rollout earlier in February 2025, Google has made its Gemini Deep Research service available on select Google Workspace tiers. Users with Gemini Advanced, which is available for Google Workspace Business Standard, Business Plus, Enterprise Standard, and Enterprise Plus tiers, will be able to access the service, which offers a range of analysis and recommendation options. "Deep Research explores complex topics on your behalf and presents its findings in a comprehensive, easy-to-read report," a Google Workspace Updates blog post read, highlighting how the service, "brings hours of research to your fingertips in mere minutes." This includes tasks such as industry research, helping understand emerging trends to inform market analysis, competitive research around other firms, customer research on prospective leads, and helping educators with grant writing, lesson planning, class projects, or presentations. "Thorough research can take a lot of time between planning, searching, browsing, analyzing, and reporting. It can be tedious work and often difficult to even know where to start. Deep Research can save hours of work by browsing the web on your behalf, analyzing information in real-time, and developing comprehensive research reports in minutes to get you up to speed on just about anything." Users will also be able to choose from several models depending on what version of the Gemini app you have, with 1.5 Pro with Deep Research now available alongside the existing 2.0 Flash, as well as newly-added 2.0 Pro Flash Thinking Experimental, and 2.0 Pro Experimental.
