Android may soon use AI to organize your phone's notifications
You're reading an Authority Insights story. Discover Authority Insights for more exclusive reports, app teardowns, leaks, and in-depth tech coverage you won't find anywhere else. These reports reflect developments at the time of writing. Some features or details uncovered in leaks may change before official release. Similar to how email apps like Gmail automatically sort your inbox, Android's upcoming "notification organizer" will apply the same principle to your notifications. The feature will use AI to analyze your incoming alerts and, when it identifies a match, will silence the notification and bundle it into one of four categories: I first discovered evidence of this feature late last year when it was called "bundled notifications." Since then, a few key details have emerged. Google has renamed it to "notification organizer," a name that more accurately describes its function. Furthermore, the feature's description now explicitly states that it's "AI-powered and may contain errors," confirming our earlier suspicions about its use of artificial intelligence. If a notification is categorized, its corresponding notification channel will be updated to ensure future, similar notifications are also bundled.

We now know more about Google's plan to fix your chaotic notification panel
Notification management is one of the areas where Android excels, to the point where many believe Google's operating system handles notifications better than Apple's iOS. However, there is still a lot that Android can learn from iOS to improve its handling of notifications. Time will tell whether Google wants to learn from Apple, but for now, it looks like the Mountain View tech firm is borrowing from one of its popular services to fix Android's chaotic notification panel. Related Android 16 may tidy up your lock screen with a compact notification shelf A subtle but much-needed feature Posts In December last year, we reported that Google is working on a new notification feature called "Notification bundling" in Android 16. The purpose of this is to silence and group similar notifications to reduce clutter. We haven't seen it working on Android 16 yet, but it looks like the company is getting close to releasing it, as more details about the highly anticipated feature have emerged. What new do we know about Google's notification plans for Android 16? As spotted by Android Authority's Mishaal Rahman, a renowned Android expert, Google's Notification bundling has been changed to "notification organizer" in the Android 16 16 QPR1 Beta 2 release. However, the feature still does exactly what we previously reported: like Gmail, it automatically sorts each notification into any of the four categories, including Promotions, News, Social, and Recommendations. Image: Android Authority It's not just the name that Google changed. The company is now more categorical about how it's managed to do it. As revealed by the Android expert, the feature description now says that it's powered by AI and may contain errors. While the feature isn't activated in the latest Android 16 release, folks over at Android Authority have managed to bring the feature's settings page on a Pixel 8 Pro running Android 16 QPR1 Beta 2. The settings page has revealed that it'll allow users to select what apps they don't want to be grouped or categorized. So, if you want to exempt, let's say, WhatsApp from this rule, you will be able to do that from the settings. The ability to opt out also helps when it repeatedly miscategorizes alerts from specific apps. When is this coming, and will it be available for all 16 devices? Android Authority speculates that we might see this feature in the first quarterly release of Android 16. But it isn't all good news, as it might not work on all Android 16 devices. This is because, as pointed out by Rahman, the AI service that it's using to declutter Android's notifications is part of the Notification Assistant service, which is a proprietary Google feature. However, we still can't rule out the possibility of Google finding ways to activate it on all Android 16 phones. We're hopeful. Initially discovered under the name "bundled notifications," the feature has since been rebranded as "notification organizer," more accurately reflecting its function. This AI-driven system will analyze incoming alerts and, upon identifying a match, will silence the notification and sort it into one of four categories: Promotions, News, Social, and Recommendations 1.
Google has explicitly stated that the feature is "AI-powered and may contain errors," confirming earlier speculations about its use of artificial intelligence. This approach mirrors the functionality of email apps like Gmail, which automatically sort incoming messages to streamline user experience 2.

Understanding the importance of user preference, Google has incorporated customization options into the notification organizer. Users will have the ability to exempt specific apps from the categorization process, ensuring that critical notifications are not inadvertently bundled or silenced 2.
While the feature shows promise, there are concerns about its availability across all Android 16 devices. The AI service powering the notification organizer is part of the Notification Assistant service, a proprietary Google feature. This may limit its implementation on non-Google devices, although the company might explore ways to activate it on all Android 16 phones 2.
Industry experts speculate that the notification organizer might debut in the first quarterly release of Android 16. This feature represents a significant step forward in Android's notification management capabilities, potentially setting a new standard for mobile operating systems 2.
As smartphone users continue to grapple with information overload, Google's AI-powered notification organizer could prove to be a game-changer in how we interact with our devices. By streamlining the notification process, Android users may soon find their digital lives more organized and less overwhelming.
