Ideogram AI image generator review

Last year, Canadian startup Ideogram launched an AI image generation service - with a twist. The team was determined to include text in the AI image mix, something which every other platform struggles with. What's interesting is how well they've succeeded. For the first time, designers, and those with more of an eye on typography, could use an AI tool to produce something grown up and sophisticated. Text was no longer taboo. A quick look at the home page spells it out. Where many of the best AI image generators we've reviewed offer cutesy anime and fantasy style images in their carousels, Ideogram shows off gorgeous high resolution images with a strong typeset integration. It's a subtle but important distinction, and opens up whole new design areas such as logos, humor or other image uses which have previously been off limits for conventional AI platforms. Of course the market is changing all the time, and already there are alternatives like Stable Diffusion 3 waiting in the wings, but for now Ideogram still holds the AI text crown. You can check it out by clicking here. The platform offers a free plan which gives 20 slow generated images a day. The speed varies according to the load on the service, but in my testing it was around 30 to 45 seconds or so, which is not too terrible. The free plan also provides access to the community image gallery, the use of the Describe tool and 70% quality JPG image file downloads. The Paid plans start at $8 a month for the Basic plan which gives 400 prompts a month, a basic image editor, high quality 2K image upscaling and 100% quality image downloads. Plus and Pro plan users can also keep their images private and away from the public gallery, and upload their own images to rework. Paying users also get to create seamless repeating Tile patterns, which is a boon for design work like texture or background creation. The first surprise when you land on the Ideogram front page, is how bare it is. Unlike other AI image generators, there's no browsing here until you sign up or log in to an account. It's quite disconcerting, and probably deters a fair number of potential users. There are two clicks you can make, either a help ? icon or an Apple or Google account login button. There's not even basic email registration. Mandating a login restricts access to the user community images which are available on the main page, and there's a simple reason for this gatekeeping. You see there are two very useful tools anyone can use once logged in to get started. The first is to click on the three dot menu under any image to copy and use the prompt which made it. The second more powerful method is to click the same menu but this time select the Describe option. This gives you a full blown 'magic' prompt created by the service which delivers the ultimate quality image from your basic prompt. For example, I grabbed a prompt which read: "a dog's head in profile with a double exposure of a forest and Dalmatians playing in the background." The 'magic' feature upgraded that basic copied prompt to: "a close-up of a dog's face, predominantly in shades of brown and white. The background is a blend of a dense forest and a clearing where two Dalmatians are seen playing in the grass. The juxtaposition of the dog's head with the forest and Dalmatians creates a surreal effect, as if the dog is emerging from the woods or merging with them." Result: a vastly improved image result, which uses the power of the crowd along with some AI smarts to produce a nice looking image. It's not perfect, but it's a great start to iterate on. The above example points to one of the key benefits of using Ideogram over some of the best AI art generators and image generators that have sprung up over the last couple of years. The platform really wants to help users get the best out of their image generation credits. Even those on the free plan can benefit from these features, although you'll have to upgrade to a paid plan to edit, upscale or download 100% quality images when you're done. Proper prompting can be extremely tricky for non-experts, so being able to use the front page community images as a start point is very powerful. Creating a Remix of a sample image is also a great way to produce something quickly and easily, based on an existing user image. It sounds like cheating, but paid plan users have the power to keep their images private, so there is a choice of access. In general, creating lush, beautiful images with Ideogram is fast and painless. The addition of the 'Magic' prompt function, although it's not unique to Ideogram, is an excellent way to minimize user disappointment through bad prompting. The new upscaling function is also a powerful method of delivering professional quality images which can be used in commercial settings such as advertising and marketing. The image results may not match the consistent and coherent quality of Midjourney, but it's not far off. Where the platform falls a little short is in the editing area. There's no outpainting or inpainting functions, so the editing is limited to crop, zoom, color selection and changing aspect ratio. The most valuable editing function is to draw text positions on a generated image and use an updated prompt and Remix to add the actual text to the result. This is extremely useful for adding or adjusting precise text, as you might need when designing a logo or other brand element. It's just a shame that there's not a larger selection of image editing tools on the platform, as there is with other services. Ideogram combines top quality AI image generation with superb typographic control. In that regard it is unique among its peers. The image quality at its best matches anything on the market, even if the editing features are a little weak in places.

This Indian AI Startup is Creating 3D Models for AAA and Indie Games

Offering models at a fraction of the traditional cost, the company is breaking down barriers to high-quality 3D content creation. The world of 3D model creation is extremely capital-intensive, and India barely has any company building this. As indie game development gains prominence, there is a dire need for an Indian company to enter this space. Recognising this void, Google for Startups Accelerator: AI First Program has decided to support 3DAiLY, a 3D model creation company that makes ultra-realistic production-ready assets using generative AI. The company is also one of the first to make these models accessible on its community platform for AAA and indie games alike. Speaking with AIM, the CEO and founder, Harsha P Deka, shared his journey, which began in 2010 with a personal loss that fueled his drive to innovate. While studying computer science in Canada, Deka received the devastating news of his best friend's death. "I wanted to create a 3D model of my friend to give to his family as a memento," Deka recalled. However, he soon discovered the limitations of the technology at the time. Despite reaching out to multiple gaming and animation studios, none could produce a 3D model from a photograph. Undeterred, Deka delved into the intricacies of 3D modelling, understanding the immense time and effort required to create high-quality models. By 2014, he had founded an animation studio, encountering firsthand the industry's challenges. "Creating a game, Pentagon, took us a year and made us realise the massive funding needed for such ambitious projects," Deka explained. His experiences underscore the complexities of 3D modelling, particularly for animation and gaming. A pivotal moment came in 2015 when Deka encountered a 3D scanning setup in a US mall, which produced 3D-printed miniatures from in-person scans. "I asked if they could do it from a photograph, and they said it wasn't feasible," Deka said. This gap in the market inspired him to create 3DAiLY, a company that could generate 3D models from photos. By leveraging AI, Deka set out to make high-quality 3D modelling accessible and efficient. 3DAiLY has since evolved into a leader in the 3D modelling industry, creating a comprehensive library of human models and developing proprietary AI technology. "We built our own foundation model using the data we've collected over the years," Deka stated. Its approach combines artists' intuition with AI, ensuring that the models are production-ready and of the highest quality. Deka said that unlike other AI tools such as Ready Player Me or Sloyd that produce broken meshes, 3DAiLY's models are fully rigged and animatable, compatible with various gaming engines like Unity, Unreal, and CryEngine. "What MetaHuman did for Unreal, we're doing for multiple engines," he emphasised, adding that the rest of them are building tools and not a platform which has a built-in marketplace. Establishing such a pioneering company in India has not been without its challenges. "The space is not well understood, and getting VC funding is tough," Deka noted. Despite these hurdles, 3DAiLY has garnered significant traction, with indie game developers and AAA studios alike adopting their technology. Offering models at a fraction of the traditional cost, the company is breaking down barriers to high-quality 3D content creation. Looking ahead, Deka envisions expanding 3DAiLY's capabilities to include design-to-3D modelling tools, enabling artists to transform their ideas into tangible models. "We're building an ecosystem where artists can create assets and participate in an SDK, benefiting from in-game asset sales," he explained. Currently, the platform has around 12,500 artists from 50 countries. "Artists are critical to the success of games, yet they often earn the least," Deka pointed out. By offering tools that significantly reduce production time and costs, 3DAiLY aims to empower artists, allowing them to focus on creativity while the AI handles the heavy lifting. Learn More Despite facing controversy -- as many AI model providers have lately -- over its data scraping and training practices, the New York City-based startup Runway is plowing ahead with new marquee features for its realistic generative AI video platform. Today, the company announced on its X account and its Discord server that Gen-3 Alpha, the new AI video model it unveiled back in mid June 2024 capable of generating incredibly realistic video in seconds from simple text prompts, now accepts still images as prompts as well. The user simply has to navigate to Runway's website, click on the "try Gen 3-Alpha" language and they will be taken to a screen where they can upload imagery and/or continue to enter text prompts to guide new AI video generations that are 5 or 10 seconds in length (the user chooses). A 10-second generated video requires 40 credits through Runway's pay-to-play and subscription tiers, while a 5-second generation costs 20 credits. Tests reveal Runway's Gen-3 Alpha image-to-video update is surprisingly fast while retaining high quality We tested the feature briefly on my personal Runway account and I was personally blown away by both the speed (it took less than a minute to generate the video from a still image I provided) and the quality. Safety measures in place The model automatically attempts to detect and block the creation of video from explicit still imagery or well-known figures such as politicians. The feature also made its way online early briefly for some Runway subscribers over the weekend before being yanked down and then put back up today. Initial examples abound On its X account, Runway also highlighted 10 interesting videos generated from still images with the Gen-3 Alpha model. As Runway posted in its tweet: "Image to Video is major update that greatly improves the artistic control and consistency of your generations." Runway's co-founder and CEO Cristóbal Valenzuela introduced the new feature on his own personal account on X with the simple phrase "it's time" followed by a post of his own image-to-video creation. The video AI race is neck and neck -- pending litigation Runway is one of several companies -- including OpenAI with its Sora model, Kuaishou Technology with its Kling AI model, Luma AI with its Dream Machine, and Pika with its self-titled model -- vying to offer fast and high quality generative video to users. However, OpenAI's Sora still remains non-public for now, while the other models are accessible to members of the public to use. But with Runway's new still image-to-video update promising yet another way for users to make Hollywood-quality videos on the fly, it's clear that the entire field of filmmaking and video creation is being upended like never before. But will the courts stifle the innovation at the behest of aggrieved artists and rights' holders of copyrighted material? Runway is, after all, among several AI companies currently being sued in class action lawsuits by creators who allege that the general practice of AI companies scraping and training on publicly posted material -- including copyrighted material -- without express permission, authorization, compensation, or consent is a violation of copyright law. How the courts rule on this issue will no doubt greatly impact the present and future of AI video and creative tools.

Designers and artists have new and improved ways to boost their productivity with generative AI trained on licensed data. Shutterstock, a leading platform for creative content, launched its Generative 3D service in commercial beta. It lets creators quickly prototype 3D assets and generate 360 HDRi backgrounds that light scenes, using just text or image prompts. Getty Images, a premier visual content creator and marketplace, turbocharged its Generative AI by Getty Images service so it creates images twice as fast, improves output quality, brings advanced controls and enables fine-tuning. The services are built with NVIDIA's visual AI foundry using NVIDIA Edify, a multimodal generative AI architecture. The AI models are then optimized and packaged for maximum performance with NVIDIA NIM, a set of accelerated microservices for AI inference. Edify enables service providers to train responsible generative models on their licensed data and scale them quickly with NVIDIA DGX Cloud, the cloud-first way to get the best of NVIDIA AI. Available now for enterprises in commercial beta, Shutterstock's service lets designers and artists quickly create 3D objects that help them prototype or populate virtual environments. For example, tapping generative AI, they can quickly create the silverware and plates on a dining room table so they can focus on designing the characters around it. The 3D assets the service generates are ready to edit using digital content creation tools, and available in a variety of popular file formats. If users like it, the preview can be turned into a higher-quality 3D asset, complete with physically based rendering materials like concrete, wood or leather. At this year's SIGGRAPH computer graphics conference, designers will see just how fast they can make their ideas come to life. Shutterstock will demo a workflow in Blender that lets artists generate objects directly within their 3D environment. In the Shutterstock booth at SIGGRAPH, HP will show 3D prints and physical prototypes of the kinds of assets attendees can design on the show floor using Generative 3D. Shutterstock is also working with global marketing and communications services company WPP to bring ideas to life with Edify 3D generation for virtual production (see video below).
