Nvidia is taking generative AI into a whole new dimension | Digital Trends

We've seen plenty of generative AI tools that can spit out images, from Microsoft Designer to Stable Diffusion, but Nvidia is taking generative AI into a new dimension -- literally. The company announced a partnership with Shutterstock at Siggraph 2024 that will allow users to generate 3D models using generative AI. There are handful of AI tools that can generate 3D models, but Shutterstock's take is definitely the most official tool we've seen so far. The models will live in Shutterstock's TurboSquid library, which currently hosts the company's library of 3D assets. To generate new assets, Shutterstock says users will be able to provide text and images as prompts. From there, designers can take the assets and edit them in separate apps, with exports available "in a variety of popular file formats," according to Nvidia. Recommended Videos According to Nvidia, designers will be able to see a preview of their generated asset in as little as 10 seconds. From there, designers can choose to turn the preview into a high-quality 3D asset, applying physically-based rendering (PBR) materials in the process. In addition to assets, Nvidia says users will be able to generate 360-degree HDRi backgrounds that can apply lighting characteristics to virtual scenes. As with Nvidia's partnership with Getty Images, the company says that Shutterstock's 3D model generator is only trained on licensed "ethically sourced" data, making the assets safe for commercial use. Privacy Policy In addition to the Shutterstock partnership, Nvidia said it's improving the generative AI features available with Getty Images. The company claims the service can create images "twice as fast" now, and with a higher quality. Shutterstock's 3D feature is launching in beta, and at first, it will only be available for enterprise customers. Shutterstock hasn't said if it will open up the program to non-commercial users in the future. At Siggraph, the company is showing off how the tool works inside of Blender, where it's able to generate 3D assets directly into the application window. In addition, HP is showing off physical prototypes of 3D models generated with Shutterstock's tool.

Stability AI speeds up 3D image generation with Stable Fast 3D

Learn More Not all that long ago, it used to be hard, really hard to generate 3D images. It was a process that involved complex wireframes, complicated software and beefy hardware. Today that's no longer the case. Stability AI today announced a new generative AI technology called Stable Fast 3D to rapidly generate 3D images from a single image. Oh, and it's fast too. According to Stability AI, the new model can generate a 3D image in half a second. This represents a significant leap in processing time, dramatically outpacing previous models that required minutes to achieve similar results. For context back in March, Stability AI released Stable Video 3D (SV3D) which took up to 10 minutes to generate a 3D asset - Stable Fast 3D accomplishes the same task 1200 times faster. Stability AI expects that the new model will have lots of practical utility across several industries including design, architecture, retail, virtual reality and game development. The model is available for use via Stability AI's Stable Assistant chatbot and the Stability AI API. The model is also available under a community license Hugging Face. How Stable Fast 3D works to generate images faster than ever before Stable Fast 3D isn't built from scratch but rather evolves from Stability AI's previous work with the TripoSR model. Stability AI first announced a partnership with 3D modeling vendor Trip AI in March in an effort to build a fast 3D asset generation technology. In a research paper, Stability AI researchers detail the innovative methods the new model uses for rapidly reconstructing high-quality 3D meshes from single images. The system works by combining several novel techniques to address common issues in fast 3D reconstruction while maintaining speed and improving output quality. At its core, Stable Fast 3D uses an enhanced transformer network to generate high-resolution triplanes, which are 3D volumetric representations, from the input image. This network is designed to efficiently handle larger resolutions without drastically increasing computational complexity, allowing for finer detail capture and reduced aliasing artifacts. The researchers also detail an innovative approach to material and illumination estimation. The material estimation network predicts global metallic and roughness values using a novel probabilistic method that has the result of improving image quality and consistency. Also of particular note is the way the Stable Fast 3D model can combine multiple elements required for a 3D image, including mesh, textures and material properties - into a compact, ready-to-use 3D asset. From 2D to 4D, Stability AI pushes the gen AI envelope Stability AI is still perhaps best known for its Stable Diffusion text-to-image generation technology. While Stable Diffusion is a 2D image generation technology Stability AI has been working on 3D since at least November 2023, with the release of Stable 3D. Stable Video 3D which debuted in March of this year, brought with it the ability to do basic camera panning for image viewing along with a boost in 3D image generation quality. Stability AI isn't stopping at 3D either. Just last week the company announced Stable Video 4D which adds the dimension of time to short 3D video generation.

Stability AI releases super-fast model for 3D asset image generation Stability AI Ltd., the open-source generative artificial intelligence startup, has been on a roll releasing new AI models that generate 3D assets from 2D images and capture motion in 3D. Today, the company announced the release of a new generative AI model called Stable Fast 3D, which creates 3D models from a single 2D image lightning fast - in about half a second. According to the company, this sets a new standard for speed and quality regarding 3D reconstruction. "Stable Fast 3D's unprecedented speed and quality make it an invaluable tool for rapid prototyping in 3D work, catering to both enterprises and indie developers in gaming and virtual reality, as well as retail, architecture and design," Stability AI's team said in the announcement. Starting from a single image, the new generative AI model rapidly generates several valuable 3D assets that can be imported into modern 3D modeling software including a UV unwrapped mesh for texture mapping, material parameters, albedo colors with reduced baked-in illumination and optional quad or triangle remeshing (which adds only 100 to 200 milliseconds to the processing time). The model can also predict the type of material the 3D asset might be, producing more likely scenarios for rendering. For example, it's more likely to create genuine shiny surfaces for metal or matte surfaces for leather and walls. This means that it can handle many different types of materials, textures and lighting better than other models in the industry, the company said. The company built the AI model based on previous work with a model called TripoSR, a fast 3D reconstruction model inspired by Large Reconstruction Models for single images to 3D. However, the new SF3D model features a whole new retrained set of parameters and architecture that allow it to explicitly create fast texturing and meshes at high speeds. For speed comparisons, it takes 10 minutes for Stability AI's previous model Sable Video 3D to transform still images into rotating 3D videos for 3D model creation. SF3D spends 0.5 seconds per asset generation on a graphical processing unit with 7 gigabytes of VRAM or close to a second using Stability AI's developer service. Stability AI has been rolling out new models at a quick pace. The company released SV3D in March and a mere two weeks ago Stability AI introduced Stability Video 4D, an AI model that can take a video of a 3D object from one angle and reproduce it from multiple views. All of these models, including the newly released SF3D, provide high-quality outputs that would be useful in virtual reality, e-commerce, gaming, architecture and numerous industries where 3D modelling is necessary.
