While the Google search algorithm serves up the most optimized links, the generative AI interprets information and summarizes it. Plus, you can ask follow-up questions, get more context and expand on your initial prompt. The chat component is what makes it different from search engines, with prompts being the keywords of chatbots. Use it as a thought partner, a research aid and a Google alternative for anything you want to know. But beware that generative AI can hallucinate - that is, it may pass along wrong or made-up information, which was especially apparent in the early days of Google's AI Overviews in its search results. The better the prompt, the better the response. To avoid generic responses, give the chatbot as much context as possible. For example, let's say you're moving to New York City. While a "best neighborhoods in NYC" keyword suffices in search, the AI requires more distinctive personalization in its prompt. Instead, your prompt could be: "Provide information on the best neighborhoods in New York City, for a 36-year-old woman who is married and planning to start a family. I want to be around young professionals, artistic people, parks and outdoor spaces. I don't need to live in Manhattan and prefer to save on rent and have more space. With ChatGPT's new web search function, this is what I got back - a listing of five New York City neighborhoods that the AI said might suit my needs: Astoria, Queens; Park Slope, Brooklyn; Long Island City, Queens; Williamsburg, Brooklyn; and Forest Hills, Queens. What's great about a chatbot is being able to push back on what I disagree with or to request more information. I followed this up by asking the chatbot to provide more advice on Park Slope and Astoria. I liked the real-time comparison function. Then I asked for a demographic breakdown of each neighborhood. I discovered the median household income in Park Slope is double that for Astoria, so I asked what this means for locals. ChatGPT responded that higher incomes may lead to elevated prices for local dining, entertainment and shops. However, increased household income can also result in more funding for local amenities such as parks and community programs. All great information to know. What about using chatbots for work-related tasks? That's something Anthropic is steering Claude toward. Described as an AI assistant, Claude could come in handy nine-to-five. For example, let's say you're an employee at a growing tech startup and you want feedback on your performance. This could be a prompt: "I'm an employee at a growing tech startup that doesn't have formal performance reviews. I've been at the company for a year. We're a small team and we all wear many hats. Provide some informal ideas on ways to approach my manager and ask for feedback." Off the bat, the advice was helpful. Claude incorporated advice and actions, with suggestions such as initiating a standing one-on-one meeting - to make feedback an ongoing process rather than a one-time event. Love it. Then I asked Claude to prepare an email to suggest a weekly 15-minute check-in call with a manager, framing it as an opportunity to align on issues and ideas. It was pretty close to "hit send." I asked Claude to make it more conversational, and it was even better. As with all AI tools, take it all with a grain of salt - just like with search results. While AI chat won't replace the first response to "just Google something" (yet), it's a useful skill to have in your toolkit.

New study reveals people are ditching Google for the likes of ChatGPT Search -- here's why

For decades, "Google" has been synonymous with searching the web, becoming a default verb for finding information online. From troubleshooting tech issues to finding local businesses, Google has long been the go-to tool for instant answers. But that might be changing. A new study conducted by Future Publishing with 510 participants from the US and 518 participants from the UK reveals that more than a quarter of Americans (27%) now use AI chatbots like ChatGPT instead of traditional search engines. But why? And does this mean Google's reign is coming to an end? With AI tools providing more tailored, in-depth, and contextual responses delivered with a human-like tone, it's no wonder more users are ditching Google for ChatGPT, Perplexity AI, Grok and other AI-driven search alternatives. Google's search dominance has been almost untouchable -- until now. The survey shows that users increasingly prefer AI-driven responses over traditional search for key reasons. The AI is not only faster, giving users instant answers, but the comprehensive and conversational nature in which the response is delivered seems to be the preference for some users. Rather than a list of links, the AI filters out unnecessary and unrelated results, focusing on exactly what the user wants. This shift is not just speculation. A Gartner study predicts that by 2026, AI assistants will handle 30% of all online search queries, marking a major shift in how people seek information. It's worth taking a closer look at what potentially makes AI a better option than Google. One of the biggest reasons people prefer AI search is efficiency. Traditional search requires multiple clicks, scanning articles, and sometimes digging through outdated or irrelevant sources. With AI, users ask a question and get a direct, contextual answer in seconds. Not to mention, like Google, many popular chatbots are free. One survey participant said, "It [the AI] was faster and expanded on what I was looking for." Another added, "AI gives more accurate and direct responses than Google." With AI as a search engine, users no longer need to skim through several different website links for an answer. The chatbot effectively eliminates the middle step, delivering an immediate response better tailored to the user's query. For instance, if a user is troubleshooting a tech issue such as their iPhone overheating, a typical Google search might return an Apple help site, a Reddit thread, and a blog post recommending the user "take it to the Apple Store." Meanwhile, an AI chatbot like ChatGPT can explain why overheating happens, suggest step-by-step fixes, and tailor solutions based on your exact iPhone model. Another major advantage is ease of use. Traditional search engines rely on keywords and Boolean logic (i.e. and, or, not) to refine searches. AI search, however, is more natural and intuitive because it is trained to understand the way people naturally ask questions. One user in the survey commented, "It was easier to use than other searches. It just makes searches more detailed and helps in my day-to-day life." Another example indicating why some may use AI over Google is in the case of planning a vacation. A Google search of "Best places to visit in Japan in April" would deliver multiple websites for the user to click through. Meanwhile, a ChatGPT search of "I'm visiting Japan in April. I want cherry blossoms, great food, and not too many tourists -- what are my best options?" delivers a tailored response in seconds. The AI understands nuances, filters out tourist traps, and provides answers that avoid clicking through ads or SEO-optimized articles stuffed with fluff. Google's search results are static -- you enter a query, get results, and that's it. AI chatbots, however, are dynamic and interactive. They remember context from previous questions, allowing for a more conversational, personalized search experience. One survey respondent noted, "I used it to get more tailored results when writing my Master's thesis." Another mentioned, "AI goes straight to the point, while traditional search is broad." For instance, if you're researching how to invest in stocks, Google provides a generic list of links. Meanwhile, ChatGPT can adjust responses based on your knowledge level (beginner vs. advanced investor), provide real-time explanations based on follow-up questions and summarize key points from recent market trends. This context-awareness is a major reason AI search is rapidly growing. There's no denying that Google is great for quick facts. However, it is evident that AI is better for complex problem-solving. Many survey respondents highlighted that AI is better at explaining things in-depth with one user saying, AI gives more of an in-depth explanation rather than traditional search engines." Another added, "It unlocks new potential to ideas and projects." For example, let's say you want to learn coding. AI can provide step-by-step coding tutorials tailored to your level. If you want to write a story, AI can suggest outlines, refine ideas, and even improve phrasing. How about generating marketing content? AI can do that too by creating social media captions, ad copy, or blog posts on demand. The creativity and problem-solving ability makes AI more than just a search tool -- it's a thought partner and a brainstorming assistant. Google isn't sitting back while AI chatbots eat into its dominance. Google's AI Overviews summarize search results, attempting to make search more efficient. However, they're still built around links, whereas ChatGPT is fully generative. Additionally, Google is investing millions into a ChatGPT competitor. While promising, Gemini has not yet captured the same level of public trust and adoption as ChatGPT. Google is experimenting with a more AI-driven search experience, but early testers have criticized it for errors, slow speeds and ads cluttering the experience. Despite these efforts, AI chatbots are growing faster than Google's AI search features as we've seen with DeepSeek, Qwen 2.5, and other chatbots rapidly popping up. While AI search is growing, users still have trust issues. With chatbots like ChatGPT store content, Google search may feel like a less invasive option. While ChatGPT search often sources citations, it doesn't always link them, leaving users on their own to search. Google links to sources, but AI-generated content doesn't always cite where information comes from. Chatbots also may hallucinate, offering responses that are not accurate or way off base. To combat this, AI search tools are improving citations and fact-checking, with OpenAI and Perplexity AI leading efforts to increase transparency. It's safe to say that Google isn't going anywhere, but the rise of AI search signals a major shift. "For two decades, the way we searched for information online was defined by this idea of ten blue links," says Dmitry Shevelenko, Perplexity's Chief Business Officer, says, You ask a question and get back a list of links and ads. We're finding that people are really exhausted by that experience of endless search, which is why we created the answer engine." Now you can ask a question in conversational language and get a direct answer in return, with the list of sources included. This saves time.. "We're now even starting to incorporate actions into the answer engine, like making a purchase or booking. Put simply, we have moved from the era of searching to the era of doing," says Shevelenko. AI search is starting to kill Google's 'ten blue links'

After decades of relying on Google's ten blue links to find everything from travel tips to jeans, consumers are quickly adapting to a completely new format: AI chatbots that do the searching for them. According to new research from Adobe, AI search has become a significant traffic channel for retailers. The company analyzed "more than 1 trillion visits to U.S. retail sites" through its analytics platform, and conducted a survey of "more than 5,000 U.S. respondents" to better understand how people are using AI. The report says AI search referrals surged 1,300 percent during the 2024 holiday season compared to 2023, with Cyber Monday seeing a 1,950 percent jump. While these are dramatic increases, it's somewhat expected, since AI search was still in its nascency last year. What's more interesting is the engagement metrics: Users who are referred from AI search compared to traditional referrals (like a standard Google or Bing search) tend to stay on the site 8 percent longer, browse through different pages 12 percent more, and are 23 percent less likely to just visit the link and leave (or "bounce"). This could suggest that AI tools are directing people to more relevant pages than traditional search. The roll out of generative AI search tools hasn't been perfect, and it wasn't immediately clear whether it would be a helpful tool or not. It's been almost a year since Google launched AI Overviews (formerly dubbed the Search Generative Experience or SGE). It quickly got messy: telling users to add some glue to their pizza in order to get the cheese to stick or to eat at least one small rock a day, and claiming that former President Barack Obama was the first Muslim president were some of the odd mistakes it made early on. There's also Perplexity, a fledgling startup now valued at a whopping $9 billion, which provides AI search via a chatbot (with advertising baked in) and has been mired in controversy. Last June, a Forbes editor alleged that the startup had wholesale plagiarized his team's reporting thanks to a new Perplexity feature that generates a web page on any topic. At the time, CEO Aravind Srinivas said that the product "has rough edges" and it "will improve" with feedback over time. Not everyone took kindly to that defense: Forbes threatened to sue, while News Corp is actively suing for copyright infringement. Despite early issues, OpenAI also launched its own search feature last year within its flagship product, ChatGPT. Perhaps learning from the mistakes made by Google and Perplexity, OpenAI announced the launch of its search feature as a prototype, hoping to reduce the number of weird edge cases that could potentially go viral. It also came with a slew of media partnerships (including Vox Media, the parent company of The Verge) and a press release that emphasized how publishers had control of how their work surfaced in ChatGPT. For now, it seems like AI search is here to stay -- and consumers are molding it to their needs. The accompanying survey by Adobe of 5,000 consumers found that 39 percent of those respondents use AI search for online shopping, 55 percent use it to do research (which I've also said is my main use case), and 47 percent use it to find recommendations on what to buy. These kinds of statistics tend to make advertisers salivate. But while Perplexity and Google bake in ads alongside AI search results, OpenAI doesn't. Per TechCrunch, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has said the company would put ads in ChatGPT as a "last resort" because he thinks "ads-plus-AI is sort of uniquely unsettling." CFO Sarah Friar has said the startup was considering implementing ads (which a company spokesperson later walked back). While OpenAI could really use the ad revenue since its products are cash-burning machines, that isn't the future consumers want -- and the lack of ads might be what's drawing them to AI search in the first place. Even though it's still early days, AI search has clearly caught consumers' attention as they experiment with this new way to find things online. Many critics feel traditional search has been broken for years, clogged with ads and SEO spam. AI search is emerging as the potential fix -- if it can avoid the same corrupting forces.
