In-house legal teams test AI for automating more tasks

In-house legal departments with an innovation habit have been adopting generative artificial intelligence since they realised its potential to improve the speed, quality and cost of legal work a couple of years ago. Indeed, many legal tasks are particularly well suited for a new wave of automation, from reviewing contracts to supporting litigation. So far the early adopters have reported incremental changes rather than dramatic transformation. But they are experimenting and expanding uses for the tech, while also figuring out questions such as how to keep human wisdom in the mix, build in safeguards and train staff in a new range of skills. Sabastian Niles is chief legal officer at global business software company Salesforce, where his team is working on using "AI agents" that can make decisions, take action or complete multi-step tasks with less human involvement. One aim, he says, is to "define and shape what it means to have human and agentic AI teams working together". As befits a provider of business software, his team is both involved in the legal aspects of new products developed for customers and also using the tech itself. Working with Salesforce product and engineering teams, the in-house lawyers have helped to develop legal and ethical safeguards -- so-called guardrails -- which are built into its autonomous AI software. Their work includes helping to develop controls that put limits on what the autonomous AI can do, and mechanisms that help the agents improve themselves to become more reliable. The team built AI agents for compliance tasks, which allow it to automate and run more checks and reviews, faster. Another AI tool helps the sales team handle an increasing number of routine queries without involving a lawyer. Legal teams featured in the FT's "most innovative in-house legal teams" list tend to operate in sectors where regulation and technology are changing fast. Straddling capital markets and technology industries, the winning team at Nasdaq, the tech-heavy stock exchange, for instance, advises on a broad range of compliance, regulatory and technology risks. In 2022, the risk team was moved to sit under chief legal officer John Zecca, in order to create a more integrated approach across Nasdaq's stock exchange, technology business, market surveillance and other operations. In the longer term, Zecca sees AI changing the balance in work undertaken in-house or by outside counsel. Just as expertise -- including employment, tax and intellectual property -- were brought in-house from law firms in the past, he says, AI will facilitate a wave of new work coming in the direction of corporate legal teams. "You might see more discovery done in-house, while outside counsel are more focused on the litigation," he suggests. Similarly, for dealmaking: "More due diligence might be done in-house, and outside counsel are there for advice on the deal documents." And in-house legal teams are increasingly able to handle more of the first stages of work traditionally sent to law firms. At cyber security software business CrowdStrike, legal team members now are better prepared in discussions with outside counsel, says chief legal officer Cathleen Anderson, "because it's very easy to do a quick early case assessment", for example, thanks to help from AI tools. Her team of more than 80 were invited by the company to champion AI adoption within the whole business, she says. All the legal team were trained in using generative AI and now more than 100 AI agents for use by the legal team are at some stage of development, Anderson adds. Several legal processes have been speeded up, including work on patents and contract review. The burst of effort among the legal team to experiment and create has focused its attention on new areas, she says. One is how to collect and manage legal data to fuel the AI systems from as many sources as possible -- whether guides and contracts or legal briefs and billing software for outside counsel. Amid fears that AI will cost jobs, chief legal officers argue that opportunities remain for their teams, because the new technology will demand new skills. For example, says Anderson, once a tool has been developed, lawyers need to work "more like a product manager", because development is just the first of many stages. And at Salesforce, Niles says learning how to manage mixing automation and human insight will teach skills "that are going to be critical for decades to come".

Lexlegis AI launches LLM platform to help with legal research, analysis

Legal technology startup Lexlegis AI on Thursday announced the launch of a large language model-based platform that can help make research, analysis and drafting by legal practitioners more efficient by reducing the intensive manual hours that generally go into it. A generative AI querying model called Ask has gone live. Interact, which will help summarise information, and Draft, which will help draft legal documents, are in beta testing and work-in-progress stages, respectively, and will be live this fiscal, according to Lexlegis CEO Saakar Yadav. Yadav said that India's legal backlog, which exceeds 44.9 million cases, underscores the urgent need for innovative solutions to tackle this crisis. "Lexlegis.ai is designed to empower judiciary and legal professionals with AI-driven tools to simplify and sharpen research," Yadav said. The company, which was founded earlier this year, is chalking out a pricing and subscription model and plans to monetise the platform by October this year. Currently, 70 large law firms are making use of the platform while there are about 800 inquiries. The platform caters to law firms, courts and tribunals, government departments, professionals and individuals, SMEs and MSMEs, and corporate legal departments. Querying on direct tax laws is available now, while other categories will be launched in the coming weeks and months. The company aims to make the platform available in an app format for individual professionals by mid-2025, when it plans to integrate multilingual capabilities and also enter the US market. "We are scaling up aggressively," said Yadav. "The legal community uses AI extensively and has a lot of awareness about it. It's about providing them what they need and they can see how our platform is different." Yadav explained that while models like ChatGPT which are trained on content from across the web are prone to hallucinations and hence face a trust deficit, Lexlegis has trained its model on 10 million, authentic Indian legal documents, or 20 billion tokens worth of data. The model answers based on this data only and hallucination is minimised. Further, the model provides references for answers. "I would say it is 80-90% accurate. It will get even more accurate over time," Yadav said, adding the company is not competing with ChatGPT. About $10 million has gone into building the LLM and the database it was trained on, Yadav said. Globally, similar startups such as Harvey and Casetext have been creating AI for use in the legal field. ChatGPT-maker OpenAI and Google Ventures have invested in Harvey, while Casetext has been acquired by Thomson Reuters. Lexlegis has completed its pre series funding and is in discussions for series A, Yadav said. "Later in 2025, we would have to raise more funds for more modules and to expand to more geographies," he added.
