Travel startup Mindtrip's new feature lets you build an itinerary from a screenshot, YouTube or TikTok video | TechCrunch

AI travel agent startup Mindtrip on Tuesday released a feature that lets you save places or build an itinerary from several places around the web. Mindtrip lets you insert a link like a Reddit post or a blog, and ask the AI assistant to build an itinerary based on the places mentioned. You can also see these places on a map and easily save them to favorites or a trip list. You can also use a YouTube, TikTok or Instagram link to populate the list of places mentioned in the video. Currently, the tool can only work with TikTok videos that have text overlays. For YouTube videos, the tool uses transcripts to show suggested places. You can even upload a screenshot of a ticket, or a list of cities you are visiting and ask Mindtrip's assistant to suggest places to visit, bars and restaurants. "People don't plan travel in a linear fashion, yet the travel industry continues to offer only platforms that do just that," CEO of Mindtrip, Andy Moss, said in a statement. "We've developed Start Anywhere to enable people everywhere to turn all of the incredible travel content online into something actionable." Now you have it. With reports showing that 75 percent of people find travel inspiration on social sites or online, we are excited to see what travelers do with this game-changing technology and how it will transform the way we all approach planning vacations." With this feature, Mindtrip is also starting a creator program, where creators can generate their own Mindtrip link and post it in their bios or along with their content. When someone clicks on that link, Mindtrip generates an itinerary based on the creator's content. Creators can also add their photos, videos, and recommendations directly to Mindtrip to better customize AI-generated itineraries. Mindtrip pays creators an unspecified amount for each registered user. The company said that creators can generate up to $10,000 per month through this program. The company said later this year, it plans to introduce a revenue-sharing program where creators will get a cut when a user places bookings through travel plans made by creators. Mindtrip, which has 12 experienced founders, raised $7 million from Costanoa Ventures last year. The company was one of the apps that OpenAI showed off on its dev day. While the product has been in beta testing for a while, Mindtrip made it available to users in May. The company said it uses proprietary knowledge of more than 6.5 million places mixed with OpenAI's tech for itinerary building. The company said it uses map, link, and picture overlays to provide better context for results. This year, the company will introduce a group chat feature for trip planning with family and friends and an iOS app.

Holiday planning: Would you use AI to help?

When Jason Brown organised his summer holiday to Amsterdam and Ireland this year, he didn't turn to a travel book or check out Instagram. Instead the founder of recruitment company People Movers consulted ChatGPT, Open AI's generative artificial intelligence tool. He asked the AI a range of questions to help plan an itinerary to Amsterdam and Ireland, including Dublin and Galway, for his 10-day trip in July and August this year with his wife, two sons aged 20 and 16, and one of their son's friends. "In the past I have always used sites such as TripAdvisor, but I realised I had all the knowledge at my fingertips [through AI] and it spits it out in 15 seconds." He describes the experience as "fantastic". "It provided me with a golf itinerary for Dublin, and a four-day itinerary for elsewhere in Ireland. It was amazing that it split it into morning, afternoon and evening. "For example, on the first day it suggested arriving in the morning, spending the afternoon at Trinity College and Grafton Street, and then Temple Bar on the evening." For Amsterdam, he says it reeled off the highlights such as the Anne Frank museum, Van Gogh museum and the Jordaan neighbourhood. As the trip evolved so did his queries on ChatGPT.

Google's new AI-generated Talking Tours sound like the future of free guided city walks

Google made it pretty clear with its recent Google Maps upgrades that it wants to be your virtual tour guide - and a new Talking Tours experiment takes those ambitions to the next level. Found in Google's Arts & Culture app for iOS and Android (you can also try it online), the Talking Tours feature gives you AI-generated commentary on big landmarks for 55 locations around the world. But what makes it feel like a glimpse of the future of walking tours is the ability to let you look around a 360-degree panorama, take a snap, and then have the AI feed you information about what's in the scene. Naturally, the audio guides are restricted to major tourist locations like the Taj Mahal, Machu Picchu, and the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Seoul. We tested it on one of London's three locations and it did a solid, if fairly basic, job of filling us in on the scene around the London Eye. For this "first experimentation", Google says it worked with a "small selection of partners and cultural sites", with "more to be added in the future". But the use of AI-generated audio means it could potentially be scaled very quickly and become a handy free travel resource in the future - if Google doesn't send it to the Google Graveyard. Our early tests with Talking Tours show it currently isn't yet close to being a replacement for a real city walking tour guide - and likely won't ever match the human touch or anecdotes of an experienced pro. But it is also a glimpse of the kind of free travel advice that isn't too far away. Combine a more advanced version of its AR-generated commentary with the smart glasses that the Google Play Store appears to be gearing up for and you could have a very useful, free city break assistant with knowledge of virtually anything you're looking at. In our quick play, the Talking Tours' knowledge of the London Eye was fairly basic, but after we spun around to take a 'snap' (inside Street View) of the river, it recognized the boat and filled us in on the benefits of the city's riverboat cruises. Google has previously dabbled with offering city guides in the likes of Google Lens and Google Earth, but the combination of computer vision and AI-generated commentary means the feature is potentially far more scalable - and Talking Tours could be our first taste of that future.

In a spring 2024 survey of U.K. consumers, 60% of participants said "they would rather spend money on making memories than buying material possessions," a 5% increase from when the same question was asked pre-COVID. I don't think it's as thorough as ChatGPT, and it often throws in weird opinions. 1. Describe your likes and wants Your AI travel buddy can do so much more than suggest tourist traps - it can help you create a truly tailored adventure. Remember, the more info you put in about who you are and what you like, the more "you" the suggestions will be. By interests AI can curate a list of spots that match your hobbies or those of the group you're traveling with: ◾ "Find me the best food tours in Paris that include wine tastings." ◾ "What are some scenic hiking trails within 30 miles of Denver?" ◾ "Suggest must-see art galleries in NYC for modern art lovers." By weather AI can suggest destinations based on your preferred climate at any time of year. Festive Christmas markets, snowy countryside escapes and a hot springs spa. Not bad, right? For every city on my trip, I got creative with prompts: ◾ "Help me plan a route between Paris and Vienna. My family loves unique experiences, scenic drives and amazing food." ◾ "I'm visiting Berlin. What are the tourist things I shouldn't miss?" ◾ "What's a day-by-day itinerary for Paris that includes local food, hidden gems and cultural must-sees?" Don't stop at the basics! Dig deeper and you'll have your travel buddies asking, "How'd you know about this?" ◾ "What's an underrated restaurant where locals eat in (destination)?" ◾ "Which festivals or seasonal events are happening in (destination) on (dates)?" ◾ "What's the easiest way to save on tickets and/or skip the lines for (popular attraction)?" We've all forgotten our phone chargers or overpacked like we're moving abroad for a weekend trip. ◾ Pack perfectly: "What should I pack for a (length of trip) to (destination) in (month)?" ◾ Weatherproof your wardrobe: "What's the weather typically like in (destination) in (month)?" ◾ Stay document-ready: "What documents do I need for (destination)?"
