Use AI as a starting point to book a trip. But do this before completing your purchase.
How do you use artificial intelligence for your next trip? Maybe it's more like, how don't you? A February survey by Adobe found more than half of Americans (53%) have turned to AI for help with travel. The top applications in travel include comparison shopping (93%), discovering the working hours for hotel services and restaurants (90%), and finding nearby parking, restaurants and pharmacies (90%). Check out Elliott Confidential, the newsletter the travel industry doesn't want you to read. Each issue is filled with breaking news, deep insights, and exclusive strategies for becoming a better traveler. But don't tell anyone! The survey didn't say how well AI performed, including errors or simply misunderstanding the prompt. And the truth is, AI isn't quite ready for prime time. Most of the free versions are often not up to date, they are imprecise, and the major AIs can't book a trip for you yet. But an AI model can offer general recommendations and whittle down a lot of data into something you can use - and it's lightning fast. It's a long, long walkthrough the airport. I've had a tortured relationship with AI since the first version of ChatGPT flickered to life. I love the speed and depth of knowledge of artificial intelligence. For example, it generated a full itinerary when I planned my recent reporting trip to the Caribbean, which was mostly reliable. And there's that word - "mostly." AI has recommended destinations that were closed, supplied me with inaccurate information about opening hours, and sent me to closed attractions. I can't fully trust it - yet. But others can. Katharine Nohr, an attorney from Honolulu, used ChatGPT to schedule a recent trip to Japan for a friend. "I used AI to create a detailed itinerary, list of top attractions to see, and common travel phrases in Japanese," she said. Nohr says the itinerary was reliable and that she's used AI to plan other trips, including a summer trip to the Olympics. Working with AI is like asking your know-it-all-friend to plan your next trip. It's helpful, but you might want to check the facts. Trip planning is still hard. Hear how Booking Holdings CEO plans to change that
Most people like traveling. But far fewer enjoy booking it. A survey of more than 2,400 people who book their own travel arrangements found that 71% say the process is at least somewhat stressful for them, according to a 2024 survey by the consumer data company CivicScience. The percentage is even higher among parents of kids and teens, the survey showed. Trip planning can involve an arduous slog through booking websites, star ratings, travel reviews and fine print -- first to find what to book, then to find the best available price. Artificial intelligence is set to change this, with ChatGPT already proving that generative AI can provide itineraries and recommendations in a matter of seconds. But Booking Holdings CEO Glenn Fogel told CNBC Travel he wants to "go beyond" that. Rather than leaving it to travelers to plan their trips from scratch, Fogel said, he wants Bookings' brands -- which include Booking.com, Agoda, Kayak, Priceline and OpenTable -- to anticipate their needs. "I want us to be going to the traveler and saying, "Hi, we think, given everything we know, that you're probably thinking about wanting to go to, let's say, Naples in Italy. And using all the data we have, all we know about our customers, what they may want, trying to start that conversation."

Traveling is one of my favorite activities, but organizing a good trip can be quite complicated - especially when it comes to a new destination. Thankfully, there's a new app called MagicMiles that helps you create entire travel itineraries using AI. MagicMiles was launched a few months ago, but I've been using it now to plan my next trip. While there are already apps that help you organize your trip, MagicMiles' main idea is a bit different: it uses artificial intelligence to create a travel itinerary based on your interests. Using the app is quite simple and intuitive. First, you enter your travel destination. Then MagicMiles will ask you a few questions about your trip. For example, you need to enter things like whether you're traveling alone, with friends, family, or on a date. Then choose some activities that interest you, such as visiting museums, shopping, or enjoying the nightlife. The app also has three different budget options: Economy, Normal and Luxury. Choose the option that best fits your plans. Once you're done, MagicMiles will use AI to create the best itinerary based on your answers and how many days you'll be spending there. Tap on each activity to see more details about it, including a map with directions, phone number, website, opening hours and a graph showing the busiest times. You can also replace a specific activity or mark it as completed. More activities can be added manually. For a three-day trip to Rome, the app suggested I visit iconic places like the Colosseum, Roman Forum and Trevi Fountain on the first day. Then, for the other days, it chose galleries, museums and other tourist sights. For a single day trip to Madrid, the app suggested starting with the Royal Palace, then visiting other places such as the Museo del Prado, Retiro Park, and Gran Via. I've also created an itinerary for Tbilisi, Georgia (a place I've visited many times) and the app's recommendations are very much in line with the best places to visit in the city. MagicMiles also includes push notifications to keep you updated on any changes and works offline. Itineraries are synchronized between devices and the app has no data tracking or advertising. The developer told 9to5Mac that he plans to add more features such as an option to add flights and hotels to the itinerary in the future. You can try MagicMiles for free for three days. The app requires a monthly or annual subscription. The best part is that the app is available on the App Store for iPhone, iPad and Mac, as well as on Google Play for Android. Despite the lack of some features that will be coming in the future, MagicMiles is one of the must-have apps for those who love planning trips.
