Everything Announced at Apple's 'Glowtime' Event: iPhone 16 Models, Apple Watch Series 10, AirPods 4 and More
Among the new features for Apple phones, watches and earbuds, the sleep apnea detection for recent Apple Watches and noise-canceling features on the higher end AirPods 4 seemed to resonate the most with Apple users, but there were many more features announced on Monday. Read on to learn all the biggest news from yesterdays' event. Looking to preorder the latest Apple devices? We're rounding up the best iPhone 16, Apple Watch Series 10 and AirPods 4 deals at launch. Although battery life is the No. 1 thing people care about for the Watch and the iPhone, we didn't hear much about it. The iPhone does get some flashy new colors, though, including bright pink, bright blue and bright pastel green (ultramarine). And a big hit seems to be the Apple Watch's sleep apnea tracking and notifications. The big new software features driven by Apple's new Apple Intelligence, won't arrive all at once or even at hardware launch. For more minute-by-minute details of the Septemer 2024 Apple event, check out our archive of CNET's iPhone 16 event live blog. The iPhone 16 models are the first iPhones "built from the ground up" for Apple Intelligence, which got a long recap. (Despite people's relatively low interest in AI features.) And all that was said about the battery was that it's bigger and there are optimizations. New colors: ultramarine, teal and pink. It's water- and dust-resistant and more durable overall. The screen brightness goes up to 2,000 nits and as low as 1 nit. They now have the customizable Action button as well as a dedicated Camera Control button for touch control. The Camera Control will let you perform a Google Lens-like click-for-info about whatever the camera's looking at, branded Visual Intelligence -- later this year. There's now a 48-megapixel main camera, which can produce a 24-megapixel photo after pixel binning and a 2x telephoto via sensor crop. A new 12-megapixel, 13mm ultrawide camera has autofocus and better light sensitivity, plus support for macro. The new side-by-side camera design now lets you capture spatial photos and videos. On the inside, it gets the A18 chip, with the 16-core neural engine, two P cores and four E cores in the CPU, and a five-core GPU, plus more memory bandwidth; it uses second-gen 3-nanometer tech to fit it all in. Apple says it uses less power overall. AI features are rolling out next month in beta. For gaming, there's a new thermal design and support for ray tracing -- plus a new mobile game, Honor of Kings World, coming next year. They start at $799 (£799, AU$1,399) and $899 (£899, AU$1,599), and are available to preorder now. At 6.3 inches for the Pro and 6.9 inches for the Pro Max, the new flagship iPhones are more durable than the aluminum iPhone 16 (they're made of titanium) with a new texture. There are new colors, too: darker black, brighter silver, rose-goldy pink and silver. It dissipates heat better, has a larger battery and better power optimization. Building on the features available on the lower-end models, these run on a new A18 Pro chip which enables features unique to these iPhones. On top of the tech in the A18, it has larger caches and the new advanced display engine for faster encode/decode and more. Camera control for these adds a two-stage shutter for things like exposure lock. They have a new 48-megapixel camera with a faster sensor readout. They also include a 5x, 12-megapixel telephoto lens with on-pixel focus. For video, there's now 4K 120fps slow-mo, more pro color grading control and HDR editing, selectable speed preview playback, camera control button grid framing and more. New quad mics have better capture quality, plus there's spatial audio capture; Audio Mix separates vocals from all other voices and lets you layer them separately. Apple's own MagSafe cases support Qi 2 and, of course, the camera control button. Wireless charging is faster. iPhone 16 Pro starts at $999 (£999, AU$1,799) and the iPhone 16 Pro Max starts at $1,199 (£1,199, AU$2,149). Preorders start Friday. The Watch has been completely redesigned, with a bigger display and thinner profile (7mm). It's bigger than the Ultra's, accommodating an extra line of text. A wider aspect ratio and rounded corners, plus a wider angle OLED display; it's brighter when viewed off-angle, and more power efficient, but still can update once per second for a second hand. Flux is the new watch face, designed for a bigger display. New colors include jet black, rose gold and silver. The speaker system is smaller. It's more water resistant and charges faster (80% battery charge in 30 minutes). Titanium joins the lineup, as its new carbon neutral mode, replacing stainless steel, so it's lighter, in natural, gold and slate gray, with a matching band and face to match. Inside, there's a new S10 chip with a four-core neural chiplet to accelerate all its AI-driven features, like sound enhancement and fall detection, real-time translation and health features. The latter includes sleep apnea tracking; a new sensor that monitors sleeping disturbances and provides notifications. Clearance from the US Food and Drug Administration is pending -- "very soon." Notifications will be coming to Series 9 and Ultra 2 as well. There are new snorkeling-related updates too, and new bands are coming from Nike and Hermes. It starts at $399 (£399, AU$649), or $499 with cellular, preorders start today and it ships on Sept. 20. The Ultra mainly gets the updates that come with WatchOS, but there's also a new color: Satin Black with matching bands made from corrosion-resistant titanium. The Watch is more durable and scratchproof. Preorders start today and it ships Sept. 20. The design has been refined and includes a new acoustic architecture and spatial audio support. They also introduce the H2 chip. It supports head gestures. The new charging case has a USB-C port. Upgraded mics, computational audio and more bring active noise cancellation to them as well, plus there's wireless charging for the case. They start at $129 (£129, AU$219) for the base model and $179 (£179, AU$299) for the models with noise cancellation. AirPods Max comes in new colors and gains USB-C support, but keeps the same $549 (£549, AU$899) price tag.

Apple's iPhone 16 Line, Watch Series 10 And New AirPods And More: Everything Apple Just Announced
Apple's annual iPhone launch event brought us the new line of iPhone 16 models -- including the iPhone 16 Pro, Pro Max and Plus -- along with a host of complementary products: the Apple Watch Series 10 and AirPods updates. As with most phones, a lot of the new features will arrive with iOS 18, which has been out in beta for a while, so not a lot of surprises there; the same goes for the new features introduced into the Watches by WatchOS, also introduced at WWDC in June. Although battery life is the number one thing people care about for the Watch and the iPhone, we didn't hear much about it. The iPhone does get some flashy new colors, though, including a bright pink, bright blue and bright pastel green (ultramarine). Apple's iPhone 16 event: the 8 biggest announcements
Apple's "It's Glowtime" event has just come to a close. While the iPhone 16 was the headliner of today's showcase, Apple had several other announcements to share, including some exciting new additions to its smartwatch and AirPods lineups. Here are all the biggest announcements from the event. In addition to inheriting the iPhone 15 Pro's Action Button, the iPhone 16 and 16 Plus now come equipped with a handy new DSLR-like button that you can use to take pictures and videos as well as adjust settings. They also have rear cameras stacked atop one another that support spatial video recording for viewing on the Apple Vision Pro. The iPhone 16 has a faster A18 processor to handle new AI features coming to the device. The 6.1-inch iPhone 16 starts at $799 and $899 for the 6.7-inch Plus version. They are available in white, black, green, pink, and blue and start shipping on September 20th. The iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max come with slightly bigger displays, with the base Pro model featuring a 6.3-inch display (instead of 6.1 inches), while the Pro Max has a 6.9-inch display (instead of 6.7 inches). Just like the base iPhone 16, the Pro lineup also comes with the new capture button. They also have an upgraded A18 Pro chip, with the Pro Max version possessing the "best iPhone battery life ever," according to Apple. As opposed to last year's model, both phones -- not just the Pro Max -- are getting the same 5x telephoto camera with a "tetraprism" design, along with an upgraded 48-megapixel ultrawide sensor and 48MP "Fusion camera." The Pro-level iPhones come in gold, black, white, and "natural" titanium (gray). The iPhone 16 Pro costs $999, while the Pro Max costs $1,199. They'll be available for preorder on Friday and in stores on September 20th. All of the iPhone 16 models are ready for Apple Intelligence -- the new AI features Apple is launching in beta next month starting in English. These features include the ability to search for images in your library by describing them and creating custom emoji. Yet Apple is also outfitting the iPhone 16's Camera Control button with a new feature, called Visual Intelligence, which will automatically search for things you take photos of. You can also use it to perform actions, such as snapping a photo of a concert poster and easily adding it to your calendar. The Apple Watch Series 10 has the thinnest profile yet, along with a larger wide-angle OLED display that Apple says is up to 40 percent brighter when viewed at an angle. It's also capable of detecting signs of sleep apnea by measuring breathing disturbances while you're asleep. The new watch also has a built-in depth and water temperature sensor. The new device comes in a polished aluminum finish in black, with matte options for rose gold, and silver, or a polished titanium finish that Apple says is 20 percent lighter than the Series 9. The Watch Series 10 starts at $399 and will become available on September 20th. The Watch Ultra didn't get any major updates during this event, but Apple announced a sleek satin black finish as well as a titanium Milanese Loop band that Apple says is "made from corrosion-resistant titanium and designed for scuba." Apple has finally taken the wraps off the AirPods 4, which comes with a new H4 chip that allows for better audio quality. With an open-ear design, Apple says the new buds are the "most comfortable AirPods" ever. They also come with helpful features like voice isolation and transparency mode. They feature a smaller USB-C-compatible charging case with a speaker, allowing it to make a noise if you're trying to locate it with the Find My app. Apple is also bringing active noise cancellation to the next-gen AirPods, but they're more expensive. The cheaper AirPods model costs $129, while the version with ANC costs $179. They both start shipping on September 20th. Later this year, Apple will make the AirPods Pro 2 available as an over-the-counter hearing aid. Apple is launching a couple of other hearing-focused features on the AirPods Pro 2, including a feature designed to protect hearing and a clinical-grade hearing test. These features become available in a free software update in more than 100 countries and regions this fall. Apple also had a small update to its over-the-ear AirPods Max. It's offering the device in some new colors and switched out the Lightning charging port for USB-C.

Everything Apple Announced at Its Glowtime Event: iPhone 16, AirPods 4, and More
The iPhone 16 comes with a â€~Camera Control’ button, but perhaps more exciting is a slimmer Apple Watch Series 10 and the return of the AirPods Max. Apple’s Glowtime was less interesting than rumors made it out to be. As much as some expected redesigned Apple Watch Ultras or Apple Watch FEs, the 2024 refresh on Apple’s iPhones, wearables, and AirPods was a subdued affair, all better to make way for Apple Intelligence AI features. If there was any phrase uttered more than “our mostâ€| ever†at Apple’s big tech conference, it was “coming later this year.†Still, there’s some cool stuff waiting in the wings for Apple fans. The new slimmed-down Apple Watch Series 10 should be lighter but with more screen real estate. If you like big phones, the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max are bigger than ever. And if you were ever hoping to use your iPhone like a DSLR with a half-cock shutter button, you willâ€| eventually. That feature, and many more, are coming “later this year.†The regular old iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus look a lot like the iPhone 15, though with a redesigned camera bump and two new buttons jutting out the side. The base model gets the iPhone 15 Pro’s programmable action button, but the big addition is the Camera Control “tactic†button. The base phones plus the 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max's new control can open the camera app and take photos, but it can also swipe through some simplified photo controls without needing to hit the screen. All new iPhone 16 models use a version of the A18 Bionic CPU. The A18 Pro in the Pro and Pro Max phones has a better GPU and NPU, plus it allows ProMotion display support and always-on display. The Pro models also come with several more camera tweaks. Most, if not all, of the promised AI features, some of which work with the new camera control button, won’t be out until after iOS 18 drops alongside the iPhone 16 on Sept. 20. Sorry, this isn’t the rumored “Apple Watch Series X,†even with the Apple Watch’s first major redesign in several years. The Apple Watch Series 10 has a touted 30% more screen area thanks to reduced bezels and a sloped watch face design. It’s thinner and lighter than previous models, and you can now finally get it in anodized black in either aluminum or titanium. The new watch will charge faster than before, with a promised 0 to 80% in 30 minutes. Plus, a new sleep apnea detection mode will monitor your movements and breathing for signs of distress while you snooze. The new Apple watch should be available Sept. 20, with preorders starting today. Everything comes in black over here in Apple land. There’s no Apple Watch Ultra 3 this year, but instead, anybody who didn’t like the silver look of the original model can nab a version in scratch-resistant black. There's a new titanium Milanese loop for sports stars who want to look stylish, but the coolest feature for nerds like me is the Tides app. This will let you know when high tide or low tide is coming, and you can even see the elevation of the tides with a simple graph. Apple’s offering a few more options if you don’t want to shell out for the AirPods Pro just to get ANC with your Apple-brand buds. The big touted new features of the new AirPods 4 models are a new acoustic architecture, drivers, and on-board M2 chip. But other than that, there’s actually two separate versions, and the one with better noise canceling is the one you truly want. The open ear design that retails for $180 comes with active noise canceling and a “premium charging case.†The lower-end versions come without ANC, but both are supposed to have nod-based gestures to respond to Siri announcements such as incoming calls. The $130, lower-end versions also won’t have access to the Qi-certified wireless charger, whereas the $180 version does. All-in-all, it seems like the more expensive version is a much better investment unless ifâ€"for some reasonâ€"you can’t stand ANC. It’s been four years since the last time Apple updated its AirPods Max headphones. Well, they’ve finally offered them an update. Unfortunately, it’s mostly an attempt to switch the headphones from Lightning to USB-C chargers. That’s fine and dandy, but it’s nowhere near as dramatic as we’d hope for. They still run for $550 in a few new color options, like a light purple color. They will retail for $550 and be available Sept. 20. The tech giant finally showed off its long-rumored work to turn their earbuds into hearing tech. Apple’s Health app now has a hearing section that can conduct a simple hearing test in case they are worried all their loud jams are hurting their hearing. More important is the hearing assistance included in the AirPods Pro 2. Apple calls this an “over-the-counter hearing aid capability,†turning their buds into " clinical-grade hearing aids.†Simply put, with the AirPods in, users should be able to have sounds like speech or music boosted for them, all of which can be adjusted in settings. Apple says it's getting approval from global health agencies “soon,†and it should be available in the U.S. and elsewhere sometime later this year.

The iPhone 16, new AirPods and other highlights from Apple's product showcase
CUPERTINO, Calif. (AP) -- Apple squarely shifted its focus toward artificial intelligence with the unveiling of its hotly anticipated iPhone 16 along with a slew of new features coming with the next update to the device's operating system. While the new phone lineup headlined Monday's showcase, the tech giant also shared updates to its smartwatch and AirPod lineups. Here are all the biggest announcements from Apple's "Glowtime" event. Apple Intelligence Apple's core artificial intelligence offerings are being packaged and billed as Apple Intelligence -- first revealed at the company's developers conference in June. These features include the ability to search for images in your library by describing them, creating custom emojis, summarizing emails and prioritizing notifications. Apple Intelligence will also upgrade Apple's virtual assistant Siri to get it to better understand requests and give it some awareness of on-screen actions taking place on the phone, hopefully making it more useful. What sets Apple apart from what's being offered by rivals Samsung and Google? It is trying to preserve its longtime commitment to privacy by tailoring its AI so that most of its functions are processed on the device itself instead of at remote data centers. When a task requires a connection to a data center, Apple promises it will be done in a tightly controlled way that ensures no personal data is stored remotely. Most of Apple's AI functions will roll out as part of a free software update to iOS 18, the operating system that will power the iPhone 16 rolling out from October through December. U.S. English will be the featured language at launch but an update enabling other languages will come out next year, according to Apple. iPhone 16 and the camera button The iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max will offer slightly bigger displays and feature variants of the powerful A18 chip, which gives Apple the computing power its devices need to run AI functions on its devices. The iPhone 16 "has been designed for Apple Intelligence from the ground up," CEO Tim Cook said during Monday's event. On the other end of the spectrum, the biggest physical change to the iPhone 16 lineup comes in the form of a dedicated camera-control button. The button responds to clicks and gestures, allowing users to quickly snap pictures, preview a shot or start video recording. The button also allows owners to use something called Visual Intelligence, which will tell the iPhone 16 to automatically search on things you take photos of. The phones will start shipping Sept. 20. The iPhone 16 will retail for $799, with the Plus model going for $899. The iPhone 16 Pro will cost $999, while the Pro Max will sell for $1,199. Apple Watch upgrades The Apple Watch Series 10 features a larger, and brighter, wide-angle OLED display that will allow users to better view the watch at an angle. But Apple focused much of its presentation on the device's ability to detect signs of sleep apnea. The new device is also being offered in a titanium finish for the first time, joining a longtime trend in the watch industry of offering a tougher, more lightweight, and perceived higher-quality, alternative to traditional materials. The Series 10 watch starts at $399 and will be available on Sept. 20. Airpods lean toward being a listening device The new AirPods 4 series will come with an upgraded chip for better audio quality, and will feature more active noise cancellation. If you frequently lose your ear buds, the new AirPods will also play a sound when you locate them through the Find My app. In a medically focused update to the AirPods Pro 2, Apple said it will upgrade the devices so they can act as an over-the-counter hearing aid. A free software update will provide the upgrade and also include options to help protect hearing and the ability to administer a clinical-grade hearing test. The AirPod 4 model costs $129, while the version with active noise cancelling will cost $179. They both ship on Sept. 20.

Everything Apple Announced at Its iPhone 16 'Glowtime' Event
If you're excited to get your hands on Apple Intelligence, you'll be waiting a few more weeks. But at its "Glowtime" event today, Apple did unveil its next-gen iPhone, Apple Watch, and AirPods, as expected. Preorders for everything start on Friday ahead of a Sept. 20 launch, so get your credit cards ready if you're in the market for a smartphone or smartwatch upgrade. If you didn't have time to watch this morning's 90-minute presentation, here's what you missed. iPhone 16 and 16 Pro Despite the event's "Glowtime" moniker, which refers to the redesigned Siri, the headliner was Apple's new smartphone lineup. Look-wise, the iPhone 16 and 16 Pro aren't major departures from their predecessors. Most notable is the addition of a Camera Control on the bottom-right side, which allows for quick access to the camera app and lets you adjust settings by pressing lightly and sliding your finger back and forth. The lower-tier iPhones also get the Action button that's already on the Pro models. There, you can customize it to do what you want, like turning on the flashlight. The prices are the same, with small tweaks to the colors. There's also the usual camera and chip upgrades, with every model getting an A18 chip. Apple Intelligence Arriving Fashionably Late Apple's suite of AI tools was supposed to launch with iOS 18, but it won't arrive until October with iOS 18.1. And even then, it will only be a few of the features Apple expects to roll out over the coming months. Look for AI writing tools and some small updates to Siri. But marquee features, like ChatGPT integration, don't have hard launch dates yet. Apple Watch Series 10 Apple says the Apple Watch Series 10 "is the thinnest Apple Watch yet" at 9.7mm thick, or about 10% thinner than last year's Apple Watch Series 9. It had to shrink down some components to get it there, but the device's speaker is still powerful enough to let people play music and podcasts directly from the smartwatch itself. With a wide-angle OLED display, it can emit more light at an angle, so you can see more when looking at it from the side. The most notable addition may be sleep apnea detection coming later this month, pending FDA approval. But that's also rolling out to Apple Watch Series 9 and the Apple Watch Ultra 2. Like previous iterations, the Wi-Fi version starts at $399. It comes in 42mm and 46mm sizes with a new jet black and rose gold option. For more, check out Apple Watch Series 10 vs. Series 9: Should You Upgrade? AirPods 4 Apple's true wireless earbuds get an upgrade for the fall, with two versions of the standard AirPods. The basic AirPods 4 will cost $129, while a version with active noise cancellation (ANC) will cost $179. Apple has changed the shape and fit of its AirPods slightly, and Apple promises reengineered audio for better audio quality overall. The AirPods 4 run Apple's H2 chip and come with a USB-C charging case. Those looking to upgrade their AirPods Max only got some new color options and USB-C. Turn Your AirPods Into Hearing Aids The move to allow over-the-counter hearing aids in the US has paved the way for Hearing Protection on the AirPods Pro 2. It's also pending FDA approval, but once it rolls out, it'll let you pair your iPhone, iPad, or Mac with the AirPods to run a hearing test. The "interactive" experience will produce a number representing hearing loss in each ear, a classification, and recommendations. Results will be stored in the Health app, and can be shared with a healthcare provider.

Apple iPhone 16 Event: Everything Announced - IGN
Ever since iOS 17 was revealed at WWDC 2024, time has been marching on towards the iPhone 16. Well, the time is now. Today's Apple Event will show us exactly what Apple has been cooking up over the last year, and the devices that will be running the software shown off back in June. With how much AI was mentioned when iOS 18 was announced, I'm expecting the new iPhone to have heavy AI features, much like the Samsung Galaxy S24 that Samsung put out back in January. What that means for how the device works, however, remains to be seen. Either way, we're watching the event as it airs, so here's everything that's been announced so far. After going on about how Apple Watch makes everyone's life better, Tim Cook announced the new Apple Watch Series 10 with an 'all-new design' that looks just like the last Apple Watch, just a bit thinner. The biggest change is a much larger, more legible display, with 30% more screen real estate than the Apple Watch Series 6. This should make it much easier to read content at a glance, combined with a 30% brighter display. Apple is showing off the bigger, brighter display with a new Flux watch face. The Apple Watch Series 10 also features new colorways: Jet Black, Rose Gold and Silver. Plus, Apple has made these finishes more scratch-resistant, while cutting the thickness down to 9.7mm, making it an extremely thin smartwatch. Apple has also improved the charging coil on the back of the Apple Watch, which should cut down on charging time. If you want something a bit more premium, Apple is also releasing the Apple Watch Series 10 in a new Titanium finish, which weighs 20% less than the Aluminum versions, while also having more premium-looking finishes. Though, you're going to have to fork over quite a bit of change to get this model. The Apple Watch Series 10 is being powered by the new S10 SoC (System on a Chip), which has a 4-core neural engine, to better handle AI workloads, like being able to detect falls and contact emergency services when you need it and without needing you to do anything. This AI chip also powers a translation app native on the watch, which will be a lot less awkward than bringing out your phone to mediate a conversation. New to the Series 10 is the ability for the Apple Watch to help detect changes in your sleep pattern that can help identify Sleep Apnea before it becomes a serious problem. These notifications will be coming to Apple Watch Series 9 and Apple Watch Ultra 2, as well. The Apple Watch Series 10 has some new workout improvements, too. Key among them is a new depth app, which will measure how deep you dive, making it an awesome companion for divers. This is paired with a tides app, that'll help you predict the movement of the tides if you're planning on hanging out on the beach or surfing. Apple is also announcing a new finish for the Apple Watch Ultra 2, which now comes in a Satin Black colorway with a matching titanium band. The Apple Watch Series 10 starts at $399 and is available for preorder today. You can expect to see it on store shelves September 20, 2024. It's been a few years since the AirPods 3 hit the market, but Apple has finally announced the Airpods 4, and it has a new, refined design that should be much more comfortable. These new AirPods are now also powered by an H2 SoC and a new audio architecture. This allows for features like Personalized Spatial Audio, which should make audio quality much better, no matter what you're listening to. The charging case has also been improved, cutting down the size and changing the connection to USB-C, effectively ending the dreaded Lightning cable for good. Noise cancellation is also coming to the base model, which used to be exclusive to the AirPods Pro. Apple is also taking notes from the Samsung Galaxy Buds, with adaptive noise cancellation, which will tweak the cancellation depending on what you're doing and whether or not you're speaking. Apple has also added a speaker to the charging case, which will work with Find My, making it easier to find your earbuds when you've misplaced them. It's not just the basic AirPods that are getting new toys, the AirPods Pro are also being updated. The AirPods Pro 2 is getting a suite of features to help identify and prevent hearing loss. The new Hearing Protection, which will be enabled by default, will use machine learning to identify loud noises and adjust noise cancellation accordingly to help protect your hearing. The AirPods Pro 2 will now also have a mode that will allow them to act as clinical-quality hearing aids. Apple has also refreshed the AirPods Max a bit, adding new colorways and a USB-C charging option, and are still starting at $549. The Aipods 4 start at $129 for the regular model and $149 for the noise-cancellation model, and are available to preorder today.

Everything to know about the new iPhone 16, AirPods and Apple's AI features
The new iPhone 16 is displayed at Apple headquarters on Monday in Cupertino, Calif. Juliana Yamada/AP hide caption Apple unveiled a host of new offerings for customers Monday -- including its latest iterations of the iPhone, Apple Watch and AirPods. Apple has struggled with iPhone sales of late, which generate most of the company's revenue. In May, Apple reported a steep quarterly decline in its iPhone sales, marking the biggest drop in iPhone sales since the height of the company's pandemic-fueled production delays. These latest offerings, including more details on its Apple Intelligence program, are a push by Apple to strengthen the company financially and to signal to consumers its heavy investment in artificial intelligence. Most items will be in stores starting on Sept. 20. Here's a full list of what Apple rolled out on Monday: The new phones have enhanced camera settings, a larger battery, new colors and a faster processor, the company announced. The iPhone 16 variations are Apple's first iPhones purposely built for Apple Intelligence, the company's AI system. The iPhone 16 Pro Max measures 6.9 inches, which Apple says is its largest display so far. The phones will be available for preorder beginning on Friday and available starting Sept. 20. The phones feature a physical camera control button, placed on the side of the phone, which Apple says allows users a one-click option to open the camera, take a photo, and start recording. By clicking and holding the camera button, users can take a photo of a restaurant and get info or point the camera at a dog to learn its breed, Apple said. The 16 Pro also allows for videos to be recorded in 4K resolution at 120 frames per second and for better audio recording capabilities, the company said. Apple has generally been viewed as slow when it comes to the AI races, especially compared to competitors OpenAI, Google and Microsoft. But now, its iPhone 16 varieties are equipped with what it calls Apple Intelligence. Siri and Writing Tools will use the AI features, which are integrated with ChatGPT -- giving users the ability to rewrite, fix grammar and summarize texts, notes and emails, Apple said. The AI tools allow for people to create their own AI images, alter old photos or search for a hard-to-find image in an album by typing a description. Apple Intelligence will roll out next month -- only in U.S. English -- with iOS 18.1, iPadOS 18.1, and macOS Sequoia 15.1, with more features to be added on later. It's been nearly 10 years since Apple launched the very first iteration of its smartwatch. The company unveiled its newest -- and slimmest -- one yet Monday. Apple Watch Series 10 also offers the biggest display to date, the company said. Apple unveiled new models and promised a more comfortable design for its AirPods: AirPods 4 and AirPods 4 with what it calls active noise cancellation. The AirPods Max come in more colors and offer a USB-C charging outlet. It's the rollout out of the AirPods Pro 2 ($249) that offer a heavy promise to users: the first "end-to-end hearing health experience." The company says that means they offer hearing protection, a hearing test and hearing aid feature. But the hearing test and hearing aid features are still awaiting authorization from global health authorities.

Apple unveils latest iPhone 16, AirPods, and Apple Watch series
At its September 9 event, Apple announced the new Apple Watch Series 10, Apple Watch Ultra 2, AirPods series, and iPhone 16 series, all with carbon neutrality in mind. Despite the latest iPhones powered by Apple Intelligence, the AI features will not fully arrive until the first quarter of 2025. While pre-orders for the iPhone 16 will begin on September 13, pre-orders for all other newly announced products are now open. All products are expected to be officially released on September 20. Pricing The new Apple Watch Series 10 is priced at US$399, while the rugged Apple Watch Ultra 2 starts at US$799. Both models offer a range of new features and improvements, including enhanced health tracking and performance. The fourth-generation AirPods are available for US$129, and the version with Active Noise Cancellation is priced at US$179. The AirPods Max price remains at US$549. The highly anticipated iPhone 16 lineup features four models: the iPhone 16 starting at US$799, the iPhone 16 Plus at US$899, the iPhone 16 Pro at US$999, and the iPhone 16 Pro Max at US$1199. Apple Intelligence Craig Federighi, SVP of Software Engineering of Apple, announced that Apple Intelligence will be offered as a free software update, with the initial set of features expected to enter beta next month. More features will follow in subsequent months. The update will initially support US English in most regions worldwide, with localized English versions for Australia, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa, and the UK slated for December. Plans are also underway to expand Apple Intelligence to additional languages, including Chinese, French, Japanese, and Spanish, with these updates scheduled for release next year. Federighi emphasized that this launch is just the beginning, with ongoing efforts to enhance personal intelligence across the apps and experiences used daily. What analysts said Bloomberg Intelligence released a note saying that the design changes of the iPhone 16 don't seem compelling enough to drive a major refresh cycle, particularly with the staggered release of Apple Intelligence features set for the first quarter of 2025. However, a 5% increase in unit shipments is still anticipated for fiscal 2025 compared to 2024. Meanwhile, the thinner Apple Watch with a larger screen could help slow the product's sales decline. iPhone 16 Apple has introduced its latest iPhone, featuring aerospace-grade aluminum with 85% recycled content and a range of vibrant new colors. Apple announces iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Pro, Apple Watch Series 10, AirPods 4 and more
Apple is hosting an event at its headquarters in Cupertino, California where it has unveiled new versions of the iPhone, AirPods and Apple Watch. Here's what has Apple announced so far: Apple just unveiled the iPhone 16 Pro and the iPhone 16 Pro Max, which join the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus the company announced earlier. These are Apple's more premium phones that have nicer screens and cameras than the regular models. Apple's iPhone 16 Pro has a 6.3-inch display, and the Apple 16 Pro Max has a 6.9-inch display, larger than those of previous models, which measured in at 6.1 inches and 6.7 inches, respectively. The new models also have the "thinnest borders on any Apple product," Apple said, calling them "by far our best iPhone displays ever." The titanium is nearly half the weight of stainless steel and is "more scratch resistant than other forms of titanium others have used." The four finishes include white, black, natural and "desert." The company also said that the new iPhone 16 Pro Max has "the best iPhone battery life ever" but did not offer additional details. The new iPhone Pro models include an A18 Pro chip with second-generation 3-nanometer transistors and a new 16-core neural engine that powers Apple Intelligence, designed specifically for generative AI workloads, the company said -- leading to a 17% increase in total system memory bandwidth. It's "even faster and more efficient than A18," the company said. The A18 Pro chip also powers new camera features, per Apple, including a new 48-megapixel "fusion camera," which can read data 2x faster, and a 48-megapixel ultra-wide camera that allows for more detail in wide-angle shots. The 5x telephoto camera offers more detail for zoom photos. Apple also introduced video capture in 4k at 120 frames per second, the iPhone camera's "highest resolution and frame rate yet." The Pro models have four "studio-quality" mics with reduced noise, designed in part for vocal and acoustic recordings, the company said, as well as spatial audio capture. A new "Audio Mix" feature, which Apple called an "industry first," uses machine learning to identify and separate background elements from a user's speech, the company said. Apple said a new update to Voice Memos, coming "later this year," will allow people to layer other tracks atop previously-recorded Voice Memos. For example, the feature could help musicians testing out song ideas layer a guitar track over a vocal track they've previously recorded. The iPhone 16 Pro starts at $999, and the Pro Max starts at $1,199, Apple said. Both models will be available for pre-order on Friday, with in-store sales starting on September 20th.

Apple shows off new iPhone 16 with bigger screen, artificial intelligence
Sept. 9 (UPI) -- Apple on Monday showed off the iPhone 16, the tech company's first model to incorporate artificial intelligence, during its annual hardware event in Cupertino, Calif. Apple also announced updates to other products: Apple Watch, with a sleep apnea feature, and AirPod, including clinical-grade hearing aid and testing. Both of those features are awaiting regulators' approval. The company, which has the world's largest market capitalization of $3.6 trillion, yearly introduces new products. In June, Apple announced plans for Apple Intelligence, as well as a new operating system, iPads and computers at its Worldwide Developers Conference. Generative AI, which is like ChatGPT, creates text and images based on natural language prompts. Instead of "AI-powered," CEO Tim Cook and others are referring to Apple's "intelligent" features. Siri, the virtual assistant, becomes more deeply integrated into the system experience. It will enable more natural conversations with Siri. "iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus mark the beginning of a new era for iPhone with Apple Intelligence delivering powerful, personal, and private experiences to our users," Kaiann Drance, Apple's vice president of worldwide iPhone product marketing, said in a news release. "This is the perfect time for customers to upgrade or make the switch to iPhone." The features include writing tools that use AI to help draft emails and texts. The new iPhone 16 will allow users to get information about things around them just by pointing their camera, the company announced. The iPhone 16 comes with 17% more system memory bandwidth to better support Apple Intelligence. And the beefed up memory also lets you shoot in 4K resolution at 120 frames per second, with the ability to make the video slow-motion after recording a clip, rather than trying to grab the right setting as the action is happening. The two models are Phone 16 Pro Max and the smaller Phone 16 Pro. The features are similar except for size. The iPhone 16 Pro Max, which is 6.9 inches diagonally, will cost $1,199, making it the most expensive iPhone Apple ever sold. In 2017, the iPhone X cost $999. The new Apple iPhone 16 Pro will cost $999 and is bigger by 0.2 inches than last year's models. The new one is 6.3 inches. Apple said the devices include the thinnest borders and feature the longest-lasting battery life on any of its iPhones. The Max offers 33 hours of video playback and iPhone 16 Pro has 27 hours. It comes in four colors: white titanium, darker titanium, natural titanium and a brown-colored desert titanium. Apple released the first iPhone on June 29, 2007, with a 3.5-inch multi-touch display, a 2-megapixel camera and a touch-friendly interface. Its cost was $499. Apple iPod 4 The AirPods were redesigned to make them fit better into user ears. They also come with more control to play and pause music, start and end calls, and also include USB-C via the charging case. The battery life is up to 30 hours. The model will come with a clinical-grade over-the-counter hearing aid feature and include clinical hearing test that users can access on their iPhones. Apple said it expects to receive clearance from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and other regulators soon. "After you take a hearing test, your AirPods Pro are transformed into a personalized hearing aid, hosting the specific sounds you need in real time," Apple's VP of Health, Sumbul Ahmad Desai said in a news release. The new model will start at $129. And AirPods 4 with the active noise cancellation feature cost $179. The first iPods were released on Nov. 10, 2001, at a cost of $399. Apple has debuted an update to its high-end headphones, the AirPods Max, which now includes USB-C charging. The cost is $549. They come in midnight, starlight, blue, purple, and orange, and offer USB-C charging for more convenience. Apple Watch Series 10 The latest device, which offers underwater features and sleep apnea, is the thinnest yet has the largest-ever screen display. "With a larger screen, you can increase the font size without sacrificing content and you can see an additional line of text in apps like messages, mail and news," Jeff Williams, Apple's chief operating oOfficer, said at the event, said at the event. "The device is more energy-efficient than the previous one, as well, and charges faster." It can now go 20 feet underwater and features a water temperature sensor and a depth gauge. Designed for snorkeling, it includes direction and time spent underwater. The watch can detect sleep apnea, the company said. The feature is awaiting clearance from the FDA, Apple said, and is expected to be available in over 150 countries and regions later this month. "Around the world, Apple Watch has had an immeasurable positive impact on people by helping them stay healthy, active, safe, and connected to the things that matter to them - and it's helped save countless lives along the way," Williams said in a news release. The watches are available in aluminum and titanium, in an array of colors and finishes The new watch will start at $399, according to the company. The first Apple Watch was first released in April 2015, starting at $549.
