Google Drive's Ask Gemini & AI Overviews come to Android with AI Pro

After debuting on the web earlier this year, Google Drive is bringing Ask Gemini and AI Overviews to mobile. Ask Gemini brings the side panel to Google Drive for Android and iOS. Appearing to the right of the search bar, you can have "multi-turn conversations to efficiently explore and understand content across Drive, other Workspace apps, and the web." Tapping launches the fullscreen interface with a prompt box. The 'plus' menu lets you add files for context, as well as select "where Gemini can search." This includes Drive, Gmail, Chat, Calendar, and web. The hamburger button in the top-left corner opens your Conversation history. * Dedicated conversations: Engage in focused discussions about specific sets of files and folders. By grounding your questions in the relevant content, you get more precise, actionable answers. * Persistent conversation history: Easily pick up where you left off. Your past chats are saved, allowing you to quickly revisit previous insights about specific folders or projects without starting over. * Secure and compliant: Ask Gemini in Drive is built directly into the Drive architecture, it never copies or replicates your files. It honors your existing data protection and security controls, including access permissions, DLP policies, and IRM, ensuring Gemini only accesses content you are authorized to see. Meanwhile, the search bar is getting its own upgrade with AI Overviews. Gemini will provide "instant answers right at the top of your search results" without having to manually open files. These summaries can pull "from multiple files without needing to open each one." Additionally: * Ask naturally: There's no need to use complicated search tricks. Just ask a question as you would to a colleague, like "What's in our Spring 2026 catalog?" * Get the right answer: Gemini automatically understands what you're looking for, whether it's a quick fact, a project summary, or a list of specific documents, and adjusts its response to match. * Dig deeper with ease: If you need more information, you can go from a quick summary to a deeper conversation with Ask Gemini in just one click. * Control your AI Overviews scope: Use AI Overview search settings to choose which Google Workspace apps Gemini uses to find files and generate AI Overviews. Google Drive's AI Overview Finally Lands on Android and iOS

Google has just confirmed that it's bringing over its AI Overviews feature to Android and iOS devices, following its initial launch for web back in April. The update allows mobile users to receive instant summaries and answers directly at the top of their search results when going through their Google Drive files, eliminating the need to manually sift through multiple documents. As with pretty much all Google software features nowadays the tool is powered by Gemini, and can scan documents to deliver consolidated overviews simultaneously from multiple files. Users can also query their drive using natural, conversational language rather than precise search terms, and Gemini then automatically adapts its responses based on the request, such as providing a quick fact, a project summary, or a list of specific files. Additionally, Gemini can also offer the "Ask Gemini" side panel for further follow-up questions. Users will be able to customize their search settings to control which Google Workspace apps Gemini can access whenever it generates these summaries. As for availability, the feature is launching in English alongside 28 additional languages, and will roll out globally over the next several weeks.
