Google expands Gemini AI platform for law firms, lawyers
WASHINGTON, Aug 25 (Reuters) - Alphabet's Google (GOOGL.O), opens new tab on Tuesday expanded its Gemini Enterprise artificial intelligence platform with new tools for lawyers and law firms, accelerating a race among technology companies to meet legal sector demand for AI. The company said its Gemini Enterprise for Legal would help law firms use AI to manage routine and complex work to allow lawyers to focus on higher-value services, while keeping their data secure and confidential. The new plug-in for Gemini Enterprise includes integration with legal software and data platforms and a stable of AI agents that Google said can handle specialized legal and administrative functions without significant human oversight. Alphabet launched Gemini Enterprise for business customers in October, in a bid to attract more corporate clients with â its AI offerings. Google Cloud has become one of Alphabet's fastest-growing businesses. In addition to legal, Google on Tuesday said it was unveiling industry tools for the financial services sector and would later roll out other industry-specific offerings. Rival AI companies including Anthropic have also expanded their enterprise offerings in recent months, including in the legal sector. A 2026 report on the legal industry's adoption of AI from Deloitte found that law firms are investing heavily in the technology as part of a transformation that's still in its early stages. Thomson Reuters, which owns Reuters and Westlaw's legal research database, is among the competitors for legal industry market share. On Monday it launched a proprietary large language model called Thomson 1.0 that is trained on its legal research content and built for professional work. It â said the model is built on open-source technology and draws on decades of its own "authoritative" legal content. Google said its platform will connect directly and securely to other legal technology platforms owned by Thomson Reuters, legal AI software developer Harvey, data analytics and technology company LexisNexis and others. Law firms are rapidly adopting generative AI tools that can assist with legal research, draft filings and perform other legal tasks. Many are also using â AI for business operations like client and case management, seeking to cut costs and improve efficiency. Google's new offering is designed to be flexible for law firms, said Amrita Mehrok, a Google Cloud product director at the company, allowing them to choose among AI models embedded in the platform. Some â large law firms have formed strategic partnerships with AI providers and in some instances are building their own AI platforms. Google said Weil Gotshal, Cleary Gottlieb, Freshfields and Williams & Connolly are among a group of firms collaborating with it on Gemini Enterprise for Legal. Weil Gotshal's â co-managing partner Jonathon Soler in an interview said clients increasingly expect their lawyers to be using AI and taking advantage of its efficiencies. Cleary Gottlieb managing partner Jeffrey Karpf said the firm's collaboration with Google would allow it to "be involved in the creation of useful tools for law firms deploying AI." Google launches Gemini Enterprise for Legal for law firms
Google $GOOGL Cloud launched Gemini Enterprise for Legal on Tuesday, a platform built for law firms and corporate legal departments that uses AI agents to handle tasks including contract review, legal research, regulatory monitoring, and court filing preparation. The product is available in preview and debuts with four law firms -- Cleary Gottlieb, Freshfields, Weil, and Williams & Connolly -- as launch customers. Google said the platform is the first in a series of industry-specific offerings built on its Gemini Enterprise base, alongside a companion product for financial services announced the same day. The platform is organized around four components: purpose-built skills that guide agents through legal tasks, secure connectors to existing legal software systems, third-party agents from legal technology providers, and a governance layer that gives IT and risk teams visibility over outputs and access controls. The company said client data, firm playbooks, and model outputs stay within an organization's private cloud environment and are never used to train Google's models. Connectors link the platform to legal software including iManage, NetDocuments, Everlaw, RelativityOne, DocuSign, and Thomson Reuters, as well as legal research databases such as the Free Law Project's CourtListener.com, according to the company. Implementation partners include Accenture $ACN, Deloitte, KPMG, and several legal technology specialists. Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian said in a statement that ensuring agentic legal workflows are "accurate, factual, and grounded in legal authority is of critical importance." Cleary Gottlieb Managing Partner Jeff Karpf said in a statement that Google's platform "can slot in seamlessly with other daily work tools" to help the firm's teams deliver higher-quality work for clients. Freshfields Global Managing Partner Alan Mason said the firm's "strategic, multi-year partnership with Google Cloud" is helping accelerate its AI work. Weil incoming Executive Partner Ramona Nee said the collaboration gives the firm early access to capabilities while allowing it to help shape the platform. Williams & Connolly Chairman Joe Petrosinelli said the firm looks forward to using the technology to support its litigators. Weil co-managing partner Jonathon Soler told Reuters that client expectations have shifted, with firms now under pressure to adopt AI and demonstrate the cost savings it can deliver. Google said solutions for healthcare, life sciences, and other professional services sectors are planned. Alphabet launched the Gemini Enterprise platform for business customers in October, positioning it as the successor to Vertex AI and a centralized hub for agent development and governance across industries. Google Cloud has emerged as a standout growth engine within Alphabet's broader portfolio.

Google Cloud Debuts Specialized AI Agents for Financial Services and Legal Industries | PYMNTS.com
The first two solutions are for the financial services industry and the legal industry. Gemini Enterprise for Financial Services is initially available in preview for the capital markets and corporate banking industries. It includes a Google-managed Financial Research agent, more than 50 new skills with specialized agentic instructions for financial roles and workflows, enterprise data connectors and a third-party agent ecosystem, Google Cloud said in a Tuesday (Aug. 25) press release. The Financial Research agent can equip relationship managers and advisors with AI-generated insights, modernized onboarding and know your customer (KYC) workflows, perform complex bond portfolio risk exposure analysis, uncover credit market opportunities and compress client pitch presentation timelines, per the release. Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian said in the release that Gemini Enterprise for Financial Services doesn'tlock users into one model or ecosystem, connects to the IT systems financial professionals use every day, and is highly secure and compliant. Gemini Enterprise for Legal is initially available in preview for the legal industry and is designed to help legal teams automate legal workflows across practice areas. It includes specialized skills for lawyers, connectors to specialized legal systems and an expanding partner ecosystem of third-party agents, Google Cloud said in a Tuesday (Aug. 25) press release. Gemini Enterprise for Legal automates and accelerates complex legal operations such as keeping legal and compliance teams ahead of global mandates, compiling personal data, accelerating contract review and negotiation, building and updating contracting playbooks, preparing court filings and drafting non-disclosure agreements, per the release. Kurian said in the release: "Google Enterprise for Legal helps manage the complex realities of modern legal work, while simultaneously providing critical grounding and governance capabilities that allow teams to confidently focus on strategic counsel." Google introduced Gemini Enterprise in October 2025, describing it as an AI-powered conversational platform that is designed for the workplace and brings together a company's data, tools and people; enables employees to chat with the company's documents, data and applications; and provides pre-built AI agents as well as the tools to build and deploy agents. In April, Google announced the Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform, saying this unified system bundles agent building, deployment, data integration, security and optimization into a single offering. During a July earnings call, Google parent company Alphabet reported that Gemini is becoming a larger part of the company's enterprise proposition, with nearly 90% of Fortune 100 companies using Gemini Enterprise.

Google Tailors Gemini Enterprise to Legal Sector
The platform integrates with various legal software and data services and includes specialized AI agents that require limited human oversight. It can notably connect to solutions from Thomson Reuters, Harvey and LexisNexis. Several major law firms, including Weil Gotshal, Cleary Gottlieb, Freshfields and Williams & Connolly, are working with Google on the development of the offering. Alphabet is aiming to accelerate professional adoption of Gemini Enterprise, launched in October, as Google Cloud ranks among its fastest-growing businesses. Competition is intensifying in this market, with Anthropic and Thomson Reuters amongst players strengthening their offerings for legal professionals. Thomson Reuters has notably just launched Thomson 1.0, a model trained on several decades of proprietary legal content. In a sector where adoption of generative AI is advancing rapidly but remains in its early stages, Google is also developing industry-specific solutions for financial services and plans to extend this strategy to other industries.
