ST Telemedia Global Data Centres India Unveils AI-Ready Facility in Kolkata

ST Telemedia Global Data Centres (India) (STT GDC India) has launched a cutting-edge AI-ready data centre campus in New Town, Kolkata, with an investment of ₹450 crore. This state-of-the-art facility, spanning 5.59 acres, is designed to meet the growing demand for AI computing and high-performance workloads 12.

Advanced Infrastructure and Capacity

The Kolkata campus boasts an impressive IT power capacity of 10 MW, with the first building offering 5-6 MW. The facility has received the TIA-942 Rated-3 Design certification, highlighting its world-class infrastructure and reliability 1. With a scalable capacity of up to 25 MW in terms of overall IT load, the campus provides a significant boost to digital infrastructure creation in eastern India 3.

AI-Ready Features and Design

The data centre is equipped with high-density rack configurations, advanced cooling systems, and a scalable, modular design to support AI and other high-performance computing workloads 1. Its power architecture features an N+2C design for reliable power availability and a radial N+N configuration for main power incomers, ensuring uninterrupted operations 2.

Sustainability Initiatives

STT GDC India has prioritized sustainability in the design of the Kolkata facility. The data centre incorporates:

  1. Low-PUE (Power Usage Effectiveness) cooling design
  2. Closed-loop cooling system
  3. Rainwater harvesting
  4. Greywater reuse
  5. Low-GWP (Global Warming Potential) refrigerants 34

These measures aim to minimize the facility's environmental impact and reduce its carbon footprint.

Strategic Importance and Future Plans

Bimal Khandelwal, CEO of STT GDC India, emphasized the strategic importance of the new facility, stating, "Our Kolkata campus is specifically designed to support the burgeoning AI ecosystem, from startups developing local language AI models to enterprises deploying large language models" 23.

Set to go live in Q2 2025, the Kolkata data centre will expand STT GDC India's network to 30 data centres across 10 cities, offering a total IT load capacity of 390 MW 14. Its location in New Town's Silicon Valley positions it as a crucial hub for AI development, serving enterprises, hyperscale cloud service providers, and government organizations.

Impact on AI Innovation in India

This investment aligns with India's growing focus on artificial intelligence and the increasing demand for AI-ready digital infrastructure. The facility is expected to support diverse AI-driven initiatives, including:

  1. Natural language processing in regional languages
  2. Computer vision applications in manufacturing and healthcare
  3. High-performance computing for large language models 34

By providing advanced infrastructure and low-latency connectivity, the Kolkata campus aims to empower organizations to build and deploy AI solutions that drive digital transformation across various sectors in eastern India and beyond.
