Amazon makes its AI-powered Alexa+ free on Fire TV, no Prime required
AI is coming to your TV, whether you want it or not. On Wednesday, Amazon said its AI assistant, Alexa+, will be rolled out to all compatible Fire TV devices in the U.S. for free, whether or not the customer has a Prime subscription. The update brings conversational search, smart home controls, and AI-powered recommendations, the company says. Previously, Alexa+ cost $19.99 per month for anyone who didn't have an Amazon Prime membership, and was initially made available to the new Fire TV devices the company announced last fall. Now, Amazon says that everyone will be upgraded to Alexa+ automatically. They won't need to download an app or sign up for a subscription. Compatible devices include all the current-generation Amazon Fire TV Sticks, the Fire TV Cube, Amazon Ember smart TVs, and other smart TVs that have Alexa+ built in, including Hisense and Panasonic. The move follows an industry-wide push to make AI services available on more consumer electronic devices, often through non-optional upgrades like this. Google, for instance, rolled out Gemini to its Google TV platform earlier this year, replacing simple search features with AI-powered conversational modes. Roku upgraded its voice assistant to AI last year, too. The companies point to metrics like time spent with the features to suggest positive consumer adoption trends. For instance, Amazon says that Alexa+ customers now have nearly twice as many conversations on Fire TV as they did with the original Alexa, which apparently suggests that customers with Alexa+ are no longer using their TV only as a lean-back source of entertainment, and are instead engaging with the AI, too. Whether or not that's a good thing is debatable. Amazon says that with Alexa+, users don't have to ask for shows by title, but can instead ask for suggestions based on other factors such as theme, age or popularity -- for example, "a top-rated thriller" or "a historical drama with a strong female lead." The AI bot can also help customers manage and control their smart home, including displaying their Ring camera feeds on the TV.

Amazon is giving Fire TV owners Alexa Plus for free, no Prime membership required
Free perks do not include extra Alexa Plus features, such as Routines and other home automation modes. Riding the conversational AI wave, Amazon opened up a limited preview of its improved Alexa Plus assistant to users in the US last year. A year later, i.e., around February 2026, Amazon rolled it out to all users of Echo and Fire TV devices in the US, and has since expanded availability to other regions, including the UK, Australia, Canada, and Europe. Today, Amazon is announcing another upgrade, aimed especially at users of its Fire TV Stick and smart TVs that run Amazon's Fire TV OS. Amazon is making Alexa Plus available for free on all eligible Fire TV devices in the US. Previously, it was free only for Prime users, while others had to pay to use the next generation of Alexa. Streaming and entertainment devices with Fire TV OS installed enjoy a deep Alexa Plus integration, where users can navigate through the interface, look for personalized recommendations, or even inquire about actors in a particular scene, simply by asking the assistant. Amazon says "millions of users" engage with the smarter assistant on Fire TV devices alone, and the number has roughly doubled compared to the original Alexa. In addition to more natural, easier-to-follow conversations, Alexa Plus allows continued conversations with follow-ups. Amazon says it understands context better, letting users search for movies or TV shows without exact descriptions. Beyond that, Alexa Plus can control lighting or fetch a live feed from compatible security cameras and cast it directly onto the smart TV. Amazon says the transition is automatic, and eligible devices include various Amazon Fire TV Stick models, Fire TV Cube, and Amazon Ember smart TVs. It also applies to other smart TVs running Fire TV OS and supporting Alexa Plus, including models from Hisense and Panasonic. It emphasizes that users need to do nothing and that Alexa Plus will activate automatically on all supported devices across the US. This freebie, however, does not automatically upgrade other Echo devices to Alexa Plus. For that, you would still require a Prime membership or a standard Alexa Plus subscription. Furthermore, free access on Fire TV does not include additional Alexa Plus features, such as Routines, seeking specific moments recorded by Ring cameras, and other home automation modes.

Amazon's Alexa+ AI assistant is now free for Fire TV users

Well, you just got Alexa+, Amazon's AI assistant, for free -- whether you like it or not. On Wednesday, Amazon announced that the company would now include Alexa+ at no cost with every Fire TV device. This includes the current-generation Amazon Fire TV Sticks, the Fire TV Cube, Amazon Ember smart TVs, as well as other smart TVs by third parties, such as Hisense, TCL, and Panasonic TVs running on the Fire TV operating system. Amazon says Alexa+ will roll out to all U.S. customers with a Fire TV device automatically. Users will not have to take any action or download any additional apps. Previously, the only way for users to access Alexa+ was to subscribe to Amazon Prime or pay $19.99 per month specifically for the AI assistant service. The Alexa+ AI assistant provides users with ways to interact with the movies and TV shows that they are watching or find new content based on their entertainment preferences. Users can ask Alexa+ for specific film and television recommendations based on genre, cast, year of release, and more. Users can also ask Alexa+ questions regarding the content they are currently viewing. Alexa+ can also perform other tasks, such as providing real-time weather updates or sports scores. Users can connect Alexa+ to other smart home devices. With this utility, Alexa+ can broadcast your Ring camera feed on your smart TV or even lock a door with a paired smart lock. According to Amazon, Alexa+ is already a hit with users. Amazon says that Alexa+ customers "have nearly twice as many conversations on Fire TV as they did with the original Alexa." The company claims that millions of customers already use the service. Amazon says that Alexa+ recommendations have improved too, with customers picking the AI assistant's top recommendations "over 40% more than they were with the original Alexa." Amazon is now looking to expand on that user base exponentially with the new rollout to all Fire TV users. In doing so, Amazon follows in the footsteps of other Big Tech companies like Google, which also grew its Gemini user base by rolling out its AI features to its existing product offerings at no additional cost to users.

Amazon is adding Alexa Plus to Fire TV devices without charging extra
Fire TV users can now search by describing what they want, ask follow-up questions, and control smart home devices with Alexa Plus. If you use a Fire TV, Amazon just gave it a pretty substantial AI upgrade. Alexa+ is now rolling out at no extra cost to compatible Fire TV devices across the U.S., including current-generation Fire TV Sticks, the Fire TV Cube, Amazon Ember TVs, and supported sets from brands like Hisense and Panasonic. There is no subscription to activate, no app to download, and you do not need a Prime membership. Eligible devices are upgraded automatically. So what actually changes on your Fire TV? The biggest improvement is search. Classic Alexa relied much more heavily on specific titles and keywords. Alexa+ can understand conversational requests and follow-up questions, so you can ask for a highly rated thriller, then narrow it down to something newer or something with a female lead without starting over. Amazon says people using Alexa+ on Fire TV are having nearly twice as many conversations as they did with the original Alexa. It also claims users are picking Alexa's top movie recommendation more than 40% more often. Alexa+ can move Prime Video playback between Fire TV devices using a voice command, answer follow-up questions about actors or shows, and surface information without forcing you to grab your phone. Your TV can do more than find movies now The upgrade also pushes Fire TV further into smart home territory. You can ask Alexa+ to pull up a Ring camera feed, dim compatible lights, lock a connected door, check sports scores, set timers, or answer general questions while you are watching TV. There is still a paid layer. A Prime membership or Alexa+ Standard subscription unlocks Alexa+ on compatible Echo devices and adds features such as Alexa Routines, specific Ring camera moments, and advanced Home Modes on Fire TV. Recommended Videos But the core upgrade itself is free, and for anyone already using voice search on Fire TV, the ability to actually talk to Alexa instead of carefully phrasing every request could be the most useful change here.

Amazon Is Making Alexa+ Free for These TVs
Only "current-generation" Fire TV devices will be eligible for free Alexa+, but Amazon says it may add more devices over time. It's 2026, which means every tech company needs to have its own AI service -- often available as a subscription, of course. For Amazon, that's Alexa+, which officially rolled out earlier this year. The experience is comparable to other smart AI platforms like Gemini: You can ask Alexa+ more complex questions and queries than Alexa proper, but you can also still rely on it for smart home control. For the most part, however, Alexa+ is locked behind a paywall: If you have Prime, you have Alexa+; if you don't, you need to pay $19.99. It's a steep entry price for Amazon users without a Prime subscription. That's now changing, depending on your TV. Amazon announced on Wednesday a new initiative to roll out Alexa+ for free for compatible Fire TV devices. The company says that millions of customers are already using Alexa+ on their Fire TVs, and while it doesn't specify, my guess is the vast majority of those are Prime users. It seems Amazon is trying to fill the gaps in its user base here, by offering Alexa+ to Prime-less Fire TV users. What does Alexa+ look like on Fire TV? Amazon says that Alexa+ delivers a "smarter, more conversational voice experience" than its original Alexa assistant. Alexa+ is designed to understand context better than the previous iteration, which means it should be able to respond to more detailed, complex questions. In addition, Amazon says the assistant remembers your preferences, and returns more relevant recommendations. According to Amazon, Alexa+ users have almost twice as many chats on Fire TV with the bot as they did with Alexa. Amazon thinks that's because Alexa+ understands the questions more clearly. The company says that its latest AI assistant can surface results from "tens of millions" of movies, TV shows, and sports programming, without users needing to scroll through those titles themselves. For example, Amazon recommends asking Alexa+ things like "Recommend me a top-rated thriller." If those results aren't quite what you're looking for, the company suggests you follow up with "something newer" or "with a female lead." Alexa wasn't designed for that type of back-and-forth, but Amazon says Alexa+'s contextual awareness makes it possible. While Alexa+ works with entertainment, it's still a smart home assistant, too. You can ask Alexa+ to move a show or movie to another Fire TV in your house, access live camera feeds from your security system, run scenes and routines, control individual smart devices, check the weather, and set timers. Which Fire TV devices are compatible with free Alexa+? According to Amazon, not all Fire TVs are eligible for free Alexa+. As of this announcement, only current-generation Fire TV devices, including Fire TV Sticks, the Fire TV Cube, Amazon Ember smart TVs, and other smart TVs with Alexa+ built-in (such as those from Hisense and Panasonic) will get free Alexa+ automatically. That said, Amazon teases that it may add support for more devices over time. The full list according to Amazon's help page is: * Fire TV Cube (3rd Gen) * Fire TV Stick 4K Max (2nd Gen) * Fire TV Stick 4K (2nd) * Fire TV Omni Mini-LED Series * Fire TV Omni QLED Series * Fire TV 4-Series * Fire TV 2-Series * Hisense U6 * Panasonic W95 * Panasonic Z85A * Panasonic Z95A * Panasonic Z95B Amazon says you don't have to activate anything or download an app: Your TV should soon have Alexa+ on its own. However, if you want Alexa+ across other Amazon products, you will need to either subscribe to the platform, or subscribe to Prime.

Amazon Just Dropped a Major Free Alexa+ AI Upgrade for Select TVs
Perhaps aside from its reputation as an e-commerce titan, Amazon has also pushed a considerable amount of R&D towards its Alexa AI platform -- most recently, the company officially launched its upgraded Alexa+ experience for users in the United States (with compatible Fire TV devices), available now for free. The rollout gives millions of Fire TV users access to a smarter and more conversational voice assistant, with features designed to streamline content discovery and simplify smart home control directly from a user's TV screen. The upgraded system also uses context retention and personal preferences to deliver entertainment recommendations, answer questions in real time, provide weather forecasts, and manage connected home hardware. Additionally, users can tap into Alexa+ to instantly check live security camera feeds, adjust room lighting, or lock smart doors through simple voice prompts while watching TV. The update requires no subscription, app downloads, or manual setup, and will automatically roll out to eligible hardware regardless of a user's Prime membership status. It should be noted however that while basic conversational search and smart home features are free for all compatible Fire TV owners, Prime members and Alexa+ Standard Plan users can unlock enhanced features such as automated Alexa Routines, specific Ring camera playback moments, and advanced Home Modes across both their Echo and Fire TV setups. Amazon drops the weird Alexa+ paywall for Fire TV owners - is it to get ahead of Siri AI on Apple TV?
Amazon is enabling everyone on Fire TV device to access Alexa+ for free whether they have Prime subscriptions or not. While Prime members get the Amazon Alexa+ assistant for free, Fire TV owners without Amazon's subscription service have been paying $20 a month to take the new-generation AI-assistant for a spin. Doesn't make a lot of sense really, does it? Pay $20 a month for Alexa+ or pay $14.99 a month for Amazon Prime and all associated benefits and Alexa+? We're not sure how many people chose that option. However, now some of them won't have to, and it may be related to the forthcoming arrival of Siri AI on Apple devices including the rival Apple TV service. Amazon says US-based owners of the latest Amazon Fire TV Sticks, Fire TV Cube, Amazon Ember smart TVs as well as - "and other smart TVs by trusted brands with Alexa+ built in, including Hisense and Panasonic" - can now access the enhanced Alexa+ assistant without forking over any additional cash. That means cool new features like conversational search including discovery by mood, genre, favourite actor and more are available now. Users can say "recommend me a top-rated thriller" -- and narrow down further with "something newer" or "with a female lead." Alexa+ on Fire TV devices also includes enhanced personalised context, knowledge of preferences and more relevant recommendations are available now. The new smart home controls enable users to say things like: "Alexa, make it dimmer in here for a movie night" while the company is also smarter at understanding commands like "Alexa, show the front door" to access the camera, or "lock the door". Amazon says it is seeing much more engagement with Alexa since the update came to Fire TV devices. It says movie recommendations have improved so much that viewers are now picking the top option 40% more often, while they're talking to Alexa+ on Fire TV almost twice as often. Amazon says it is bringing the experience to more devices and more regions over time. You can see the currently supported devices here.
