Musk's AI chatbot Grok becomes number one app on US Google Play Store
Tesla chief executive officer Elon Musk has announced that Grok, the artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot developed by his startup xAI, has become the top-ranking free app on the Google Play Store in the United States. Musk shared a screenshot on X, showing that Grok had surpassed TikTok and OpenAI's ChatGPT in the "Top Free" category. While ChatGPT and TikTok hold ratings of 4.8 and 4.1 stars, respectively, Grok has taken the top spot with 4.9 stars. "Cool, @Grok is #1 on Android!" Musk posted. Grok, first launched in 2023, is a generative AI (Gen AI) chatbot designed to provide conversational responses. xAI recently introduced Grok-3, which the company claims outperforms OpenAI's GPT-4o on select benchmarks. The Android version of Grok was rolled out in February 2025. Central government to challenge X lawsuit Meanwhile, the government of India is preparing to challenge a lawsuit filed by Musk's social media platform X, which alleges that India's content regulation policies are unlawful and arbitrary. X has criticised the government's use of Section 79(3)(b) of the Information Technology Act, arguing that it bypasses established legal procedures for content blocking and contradicts Supreme Court rulings on online free speech. As per existing IT rules, authorities must follow a structured review process before blocking content. However, X claims that the government is using Section 79(3)(b) to demand content removals without due scrutiny. The company is seeking a court order to prevent what it calls "unlawful blocking directives" and to stop the government from forcing it to join the Sahyog portal, which X has labelled a "censorship tool."
