The voice search button accessible from the Google bar found on most Android homescreens is getting a big redesign. In the previous design introduced earlier this year, tapping the four-color microphone in the Google widget or inside the Google app would just transcribe your query for a regular Search. There's also a Song Search shortcut. Old vs. new This big revamp takes after Google Lens's Search, Translate, Live, and Create switcher by adding a toolbar at the bottom of the screen that lets you go between Search, AI Mode, Search Live, and Song Search. Search features a new four-bar waveform, with a transcription appearing at the top as you speak. Once you're done with your AI Mode query, tap the next arrow, while the stop button at the left takes you to a Search box with a transcript to make further edits. Search Live offers the same back-and-forth conversational experience, while Song Search is unchanged. Of note is how Google will remember what you last used and default to Search or AI Mode. This voice search redesign is not yet widely rolled out, and we're only seeing it with the Google app beta.

This new layout resembles Google Lens' Search, Translate, Live, and Create switcher, and it'll reportedly remember whichever mode you used last and default to it the next time you tap the mic button. Along with the toolbar, Google is testing a new four-bar waveform with live transcription for the regular Search interface, while the AI Mode tab includes an arrow button to complete your query and a stop button that redirects you to a Search box with a transcript, where you can make further edits. Not widely available yet As mentioned earlier, this redesigned interface is currently limited to the latest Google app beta release and is not available to all users on the beta build either. So far, this is only showing up for some users on the latest beta, and Google hasn't said when, or if, it will roll out more widely. Google is changing the behavior of the interface too. In regular Google Search, the screen shows a four-bar waveform along with live transcription. In AI Mode, you get an arrow to send the query plus a stop button that takes you to an editable transcript inside Search. That should make longer spoken prompts feel easier to manage. If search keeps moving toward direct answers, that puts even more pressure on the wider web, where industry estimates say roughly 60% of searches already end without a click.
