Will Your iPhone Run iOS 27? Here Are All the Compatible Models
With more than a decade of experience, Nelson covers Apple and Google and writes about iPhone and Android features, privacy and security settings, and more. Apple is giving some older iPhones another year of life. The company announced iOS 27 during its WWDC 2026 keynote on Monday, previewing a major software update that includes the new Siri AI, smarter photo-editing tools, expanded child safety features, updates to Apple's Liquid Glass design and more. The update is expected to arrive this fall. Despite rumors that Apple would drop support for several older models this year as the company usually does, iOS 27 will work on every iPhone that can currently run iOS 26. That includes the iPhone 11 lineup, which was released in 2019, and the second-generation iPhone SE, which arrived in 2020. Apple says iOS 27 will be compatible with the following models: * iPhone 17 Pro Max * iPhone 17 Pro * iPhone Air * iPhone 17 * iPhone 17e * iPhone 16 Pro Max * iPhone 16 Pro * iPhone 16 Plus * iPhone 16 * iPhone 16e * iPhone 15 Pro Max * iPhone 15 Pro * iPhone 15 Plus * iPhone 15 * iPhone 14 Pro Max * iPhone 14 Pro * iPhone 14 Plus * iPhone 14 * iPhone 13 Pro Max * iPhone 13 Pro * iPhone 13 * iPhone 13 mini * iPhone 12 Pro Max * iPhone 12 Pro * iPhone 12 * iPhone 12 mini * iPhone 11 Pro Max * iPhone 11 Pro * iPhone 11 * iPhone SE (second generation and later) Apple is expected to unveil new iPhone models later this year, and those devices would almost certainly ship with iOS 27. Not every compatible iPhone will get every iOS 27 feature, though. The centerpiece of the update is Siri AI, Apple's redesigned assistant, which the company says will be able to hold more natural conversations, answer questions using personal context and take actions across apps. However, Siri AI requires an Apple Intelligence-capable device. On the iPhone, that currently means the iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max and every version of iPhone 16 or later. Apple says the feature will initially be available in English as a beta later this year. Older devices should still benefit from improvements with iOS 27. Apple says apps will launch up to 30% faster, photos will load up to 70% faster and AirDrop transfers will be up to 80% faster, although performance will vary depending on the device and how it is used. Apple has not announced an exact public release date for iOS 27, just that it will come this fall. The update usually rolls out after the company announces the next line of iPhones, following several months of developer and public beta testing.

Apple Didn't Really Say What's Coming in iOS 27, So I Guess I Will
Apple software beta tester, "Helps make our computers and phones work!" - Zach's grandparents Apple announced iOS 27 on Monday at the company's annual Worldwide Developers Conference. The tech giant said the upcoming iPhone software will include an AI-integrated Siri, called Siri AI, and more ways to refine Liquid Glass on your device. And iPhones dating back to the iPhone 11 lineup will be able to run the upcoming software. Apple's WWDC announcement said it will release iOS 27 to the general public in the fall. Historically, Apple has released upcoming major iOS updates shortly after company's September hardware event, so the company will likely release the software around then. Developers can download a beta version of iOS 27 now, and Apple will release a public beta version of iOS 27 in July. Here are some of the new features iOS 27 will bring to your iPhone. An AI-integrated Siri is everywhere After months of rumors, Apple confirmed at WWDC that iOS 27 will integrate AI into your iPhone's digital assistant Siri. This update is the biggest change in iOS 27, and it will touch seemingly everything on your device. Almost the entirety of Apple's presentation focused on how Siri AI will be able to help you across your device in different ways. You'll be able to swipe down on your iPhone's Dynamic Island to search or start a conversation with Siri AI. The assistant will be able to take actions in apps like Messages, Music and Reminders, too. Apple wrote online that Siri AI will be available on Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhones, like the iPhone 16 Pro, later this year. New Siri AI app Siri was such a big star at WWDC, Apple announced the personal assistant will also have its own separate app that you will be able to access in iOS 27. "A dedicated app brings together all your conversations in one place, so you can ask a question on your iPhone and pick up where you left off on your iPad," Apple wrote online. "You can also pin conversations for easy access or start a new one." This turns Siri AI into an AI chatbot similar to ChatGPT and Claude. Siri comes to your Camera Apple said its digital assistant will also be in your Camera app with the new Siri Mode in iOS 27. Once you activate this new mode, you'll be able to point your camera at something around you and get information about it on your iPhone. Updated Image Playground app With iOS 27, your iPhone's Image Playground app gets an update which will allow you to create photorealistic images. Apple introduced its AI-image generator in 2024 when it released iOS 18.2. Liquid Glass changes Apple showed off a Liquid Glass slider at WWDC on Monday that lets you change the Liquid Glass elements across your device. You'll be able to make those elements semi-translucent, opaque or something in between. Apple introduced the Liquid Glass design in 2025 alongside iOS 26. It's the first major visual change on iPhones since iOS 7 in 2013. Health app supports tracking menopause and perimenopause Apple said that your iPhone's Health app's cycle tracking feature will support both menopause and perimenopause. You'll be able to log symptoms related to both within the app, and the app will have educational content available to help you learn more about your body. Those are a few of the new features iOS 27 is expected to bring to iPhones this fall. Developers can try these features now, and Apple said public beta testers will get access to the software in July. For more Apple news, here's everything Apple announced at WWDC 2026.

This year's Apple OS updates revamp Siri and parental controls, iPhone 11 still supported
Serving tech enthusiasts for over 25 years. TechSpot means tech analysis and advice you can trust. In a nutshell: This year's iOS, iPadOS, and macOS updates mark the beginning of Apple's long-awaited response to the generative AI offerings from its rivals. The Cupertino-based company also used the opportunity to address growing concerns about child safety on mobile devices, refine its controversial Liquid Glass design language, and introduce performance improvements across its platforms. Early testing is now available for iOS 27, iPadOS 27, macOS 27, watchOS 27, and visionOS 27. The updates, which bring generative AI features to Apple devices and strengthen child-safety controls, will enter public beta testing next month before launching this fall. All supported Apple devices receive a revamped Siri experience that serves as the centerpiece of the company's new generative AI platform. Siri can describe what it sees on screen, locate photos based on user descriptions, search the web for information, draft documents, and perform tasks across multiple apps. Conversations are encrypted and stored in iCloud, allowing users to seamlessly continue interactions across Apple devices. However, it remains unclear how Apple has addressed the hallucination issues commonly associated with generative AI systems. Apple Intelligence can also edit photos, generate images, surface relevant information during calls, organize email, create AI-generated shortcuts, and quickly update saved passwords. However, certain cloud-dependent features will be subject to daily usage limits, which users can remove with an iCloud+ subscription. New child account controls give parents greater oversight of the apps, websites, and other content their children can access. Parents can also manage screen time and monitor purchases through a more intuitive interface. Following criticism of the Liquid Glass design language introduced last year, Apple is adding an opacity slider that allows users to adjust transparency levels for improved readability. The company has also promised performance improvements across its platforms. According to Apple, apps will launch up to 30% faster, new photos will save up to 70% faster, and AirDrop transfers will be up to 80% faster. Furthermore, iOS 27 and iPadOS 27 can switch between Wi-Fi and cellular networks more quickly and seamlessly, helping users stay connected while traveling. Additionally, an optimized CPU scheduler improves performance through a new approach to task prioritization, particularly on older devices. Alongside these changes, macOS 27 adds improved support for ultrawide displays at resolutions of up to 5K and refresh rates of up to 120Hz. Mac users can also switch seamlessly between audio and video podcasts. Meanwhile, AirPods gain custom equalization settings, while watchOS 27 introduces custom Wallet passes that support any membership QR code or barcode. iOS 27 supports the iPhone 11 and newer models, maintaining compatibility with every device that supported iOS 26. Marking the end of support for Intel-based Macs, macOS 27 is compatible with MacBook Air and MacBook Pro models from 2020 or later, the 2021 iMac and newer, the 2020 Mac mini and newer, the 2022 Mac Studio and newer, and the 2023 Mac Pro. iPadOS 27 supports the M4 iPad Pro and newer models, the 12.9-inch iPad Pro (4th generation and later), the 11-inch iPad Pro (2nd generation and later), the 13-inch and 11-inch iPad Air models powered by M2 chips or newer, the iPad Air (4th generation and later), the A16-powered iPad, the standard iPad (9th generation and later), and the iPad mini (6th generation and later), including the A17 Pro model. This year's Apple Watch update supports the Apple Watch SE 3, Series 10, Series 11, Ultra 2, and Ultra 3.

iOS 27: Seven new iPhone features are coming soon
Apple will unveil iOS 27 on Monday during WWDC's kickoff. Here are seven new iPhone features rumored to be coming in iOS 27. #1: New Siri with standalone app, chatbot features, more Siri is expected to be a major focus of iOS 27, with a total AI overhaul coming for Apple's assistant. The upgraded Siri is rumored to offer many new upgrades, including: * standalone Siri app for iPhone * chatbot-style interface like ChatGPT and Gemini * world knowledge with LLM foundation * new design tied to Dynamic Island * perform multiple actions with a single request * integrations with more third-party AI agents * personal context, onscreen awareness, and app intents features that were previously delayed * systemwide 'Ask Siri' buttons If Apple can deliver everything that's been rumored, the new Siri will be a huge improvement that marks a new chapter in the company's AI story. #2: Apple Photos gets new image editing tools Apple's Photos app is reportedly gaining three new AI-powered editing tools in iOS 27: Extend, Enhance, and Reframe. * Extend: "lets users generate additional image content beyond the original frame" * Enhance: "uses AI to automatically improve color, lighting and overall image quality" * Reframe: "designed primarily for spatial photos...allows users to shift perspective after the shot is taken" The current Clean Up feature will get improved too thanks to Apple's new partnership with Google for Gemini technology. #3: Camera app adds visual intelligence features Apple launched visual intelligence in iOS 18, tied to the iPhone 16's Camera Control. But visual intelligence is reportedly expanding with new capabilities in iOS 27, and being baked into the Camera app. Inside the Camera app, there will be a new 'Siri' mode that joins existing options like 'Photo' and 'Video.' Opening Siri mode will provide all of the existing visual intelligence features, plus some new ones. Per Mark Gurman at Bloomberg: Beyond integration into the camera, Apple is expanding the feature with additional in-house capabilities. That includes the ability to scan a nutrition label on food packaging to log dietary information. Users also will be able to capture and add contact details directly from what the camera sees. #4: Apple Wallet will let you 'Create a Pass' Apple's Wallet app keeps getting better, with several new and upcoming improvements. And in iOS 27, a new feature is coming that should expand its usefulness even further. Bloomberg reports that a new 'Create a Pass' feature is coming, enabling you to store even more of the important tickets and passes in your life in Apple Wallet. Per Mark Gurman: Users can create a pass from scratch or rely on the iPhone's camera to take a QR code and turn it into a digital ticket. The feature includes customization tools for styles, images, colors and text fields, allowing users to tailor the information displayed on each pass. Apple is testing three template options: standard, membership and event. Standard, in orange, is a default option for any type of pass, while membership, in blue, is geared toward entering places like gyms. The event pass, in purple, is meant for tickets to games, movies and other occasions. #5: Apple Health upgrades Apple Health has a variety of upgrades coming in iOS 27, including new features that were previously tied to a planned subscription service. Reporting indicates Apple had been building an 'Apple Health+' service, but Eddy Cue decided to pivot and release its new features free in the Health app instead. New Health features expected in iOS 27 include: * educational videos created by physicians and health experts * AI-powered coaching and wellness suggestions * more robust nutritional tracking The latest reporting indicates these features might not arrive until a future update to iOS 27, so it's unclear whether Apple will unveil them at WWDC. #6: Autocorrect expansion for iOS 27 keyboard Autocorrect might get a big new feature in iOS 27: grammar-focused alternative word suggestions. Per Bloomberg, Apple is working on an autocorrect change that could resemble tools like Grammarly, focusing on grammar. In addition to simply correcting misspelled words, the new keyboard can offer alternative word suggestions. This is another new feature expected to be powered by AI. #7: Safari will be able to auto-name Tab Groups If you use Safari's Tab Groups feature, iOS 27 may be able to start auto-naming your different Tab Groups via Apple Intelligence. Similar to how Apple currently uses AI to create custom podcast chapters in Apple Podcasts, and generate new Reminders sections inside your lists to organize tasks, iOS 27 will reportedly be able to automatically name your Tab Groups based on their contents. This is expected to be an optional feature, but it could be a convenient addition to keep your Tab Groups organized. For more rumored iOS 27 features, check out our full guide here. Apple finally figured out how to make old iPhones faster
The update includes customizable Liquid Glass interface settings and 80% faster AirDrop transfers, available in developer beta now. Detailed instructions are provided below. Every year at WWDC, Apple tries to impress users with major new features or a redesigned interface. And yes, iOS 27 comes with some cool new additions, like Siri AI and improved Liquid Glass. But what got me most excited about iOS 27 is something most users won't see, but they'll definitely notice. Apple spent a significant part of its keynote talking about performance. That's because, according to the company, iOS 27 has many under-the-hood improvements that will make your iPhone or iPad run much faster and use less battery power. Performance is the upgrade Of course, we all love new features. But there's no denying that iOS 26, announced last year, was a buggy release. As I recently wrote for Macworld, iOS 26 had serious performance issues and glitches. Instead of completely overhauling the operating system from scratch, Apple's engineers focused on refining what already exists. For instance, Apple claims that system animations are much smoother in iOS 27. According to Apple's data, apps now open 30 percent faster, and photos load 70 percent faster after being taken. Other parts of the system have also been improved, such as AirDrop, which is now allegedly 80 percent faster at transferring files. The search engine across the entire system has also been overhauled to be faster and more reliable. Part of this was made possible by optimizations to the CPU scheduler, a system component that manages CPU resources as you use your iPhone throughout the day. But you don't need to understand all of this. You just need to know that Apple tweaked the right things to make everything feel more fluid. And that's especially good news not only for the latest iPhones, but also for older models, such as the iPhone 11. Thanks to all these improvements, iOS 27 runs on the same iPhone models supported by iOS 26, which also includes the 2nd-generation iPhone SE. That means iPhone users won't have to buy a new device just to get better performance this year. And honestly, that's way more exciting than some of the AI features shown at today's event. People don't just notice when their phone gains a new feature. They notice when it becomes slower and apps take too long to open. The reality is that speed itself has become a feature. And Apple seems to finally understand that again. More refinements across the system Apple didn't just make iOS 27 faster. The company also tweaked the Liquid Glass interface, which has been a major reason for complaints from a number of users since last year. iOS 27 introduces a new slider that lets users adjust the intensity of the Liquid Glass effect exactly as they like, ranging from more transparent to more frosted. And even if you opt for a more transparent look, Apple has made changes to make everything easier to read. Many icons and buttons have also been slightly redesigned to highlight the depth effects of Liquid Glass. Apple has also added a subtle background to toolbars, aimed at improving readability. None of these changes sound revolutionary on their own. But together, they point toward something important: Apple is prioritizing usability again. And honestly, usability is what made the iPhone great in the first place. It's the kind of thing I missed from the last several releases, and Apple seems to have gotten it right this time. Few actual new features For those looking for something new, iOS 27 includes features that Apple desperately needed to deliver this year. Apple Intelligence continues to expand throughout the system, and Siri AI is clearly the company's biggest bet for this year. But I genuinely think the quieter improvements may end up mattering more in daily life. Most users won't spend all day talking to Siri, but they'll notice if their iPhone feels faster. Those are the kinds of improvements that make devices feel better over time. And that might just end up being the best part of iOS 27. iOS 27 is available now as a developer beta, with a public beta to arrive next month. The official release will land on iPhones this fall.

iOS 27: 11 biggest features coming to your iPhone
WWDC 2026 is just days away, and that means we're about to get our first glimpse at all the other software Apple has lined up for its growing device line-up -- including iOS 27. The update will be rolling out to compatible iPhones later this year, and what we've heard so far suggests that this could be one of the most exciting iOS updates so far. This could be the year that Apple finally starts catching up to its rivals in the AI race, thanks to the perpetually delayed and long-awaited Siri upgrade. The Gemini-powered AI is shaping up to be the star of the whole conference, but that's not the only upgrade we're expecting when Apple's next mobile OS starts rolling out. Here are 11 of the biggest upgrades we expect to see with iOS 27. Gemini-powered Siri The biggest news for iOS 27 is that this should be the update that finally brings the new AI-powered Siri to iPhones. Originally announced back in 2024, this upgrade has been delayed multiple times and proved to be too much for Apple to handle solo in a short period of time. So it's partnered with Google, which has supplied Gemini models to power the new Siri experience. The new Siri is expected to come with all the features you'd expect from a true AI chatbot. This includes conversational abilities, improved natural language skills, contextual awareness and an optional history feature that lets it learn about you and offer more personalized responses. Other upgrades of note include a dedicated Siri app, with chat histories and other settings, as well as a "write with Siri" and "Ask Siri" features that work across all Apple operating systems. A new web search feature powered by Perplexity AI is also said to be included. That means Siri can search the web for you, and won't have to divert your answers to the likes of Gemini or ChatGPT. However, the new Siri may be officially marketed as beta or preview software, suggesting that things won't be 100% complete by the time iOS 27 launches in the fall. Choose your own AI with Extensions Back when Apple Intelligence launched, Apple offloaded some of the more serious features to ChatGPT. This gave OpenAI's chatbot native support within iOS, letting it access various AI features like Writing Tools and Image Playground, as well as letting users control ChatGPT through Siri. iOS 27 is set to open this up to other third-party chatbots instead. This new feature is called Extensions, and will allow other chatbots to be installed from the App Store and linked into Apple's native AI tools. Apparently, testing has involved both Claude and Google Gemini, but it sounds like Apple won't be locking out other AI chatbots. Whether it's Alexa, Meta AI, Copilot, Grok or whatever other model you prefer. This is all separate from the deal Apple made to power Siri with Gemini models, though. Instead of simply utilizing Google models to power an AI, Extension will let you converse with Gemini (and other AIs) directly. More AI photo editing tools As far as I can remember, photo editing tools were among the first features to openly advertise their AI credentials on Android, but iPhones always felt like they were a little bit behind. iOS 27 could help turn that around, with a major upgrade to its suite of photo editing tools. This update will include features called Extend, Enhance and Reframe. Enhance is fairly self-explanatory, while Extend will use AI to add additional image content beyond the boundaries of the original frame. Reframe is specifically designed for spatial photos, and will let users adjust the perspective of the image long after it was taken. According to Bloomberg, Apple is also testing prompt-based photo editing, similar to that found on Pixel and Samsung Galaxy phones. This would let you use voice or text prompts to ask for specific edits, rather than having to find and use specific tools yourself. However, this may not be ready for the first iteration of iOS 27, and may arrive later. Apple Wallet passes Digital wallets are a great way to lessen your reliance, or even completely ditch, a physical wallet or purse. Of course, that becomes a lot harder if you need to carry around physical cards and passes that don't support Apple Wallet. Fortunately, iOS 27 should be about to change that with a feature that may let you digitize physical passes and store digital ones on your phone. This is a feature Google and Samsung Wallet have both had for a while, so Apple is definitely behind the curve. But it's better late than never, and that means iOS 27 should give users the ability to convert things like membership cards, event tickets, gift cards and all the other scannable things you may need to carry that Apple Wallet doesn't natively support already. Bill Splitting There's no shortage of apps and services that can split bills and generate payment requests so everyone can cover their portion. Apple Wallet updates in iOS 27 could see Apple try and push those apps out of business, by offering a native option that connects to both Wallet and Apple Pay. The feature will reportedly have the ability to scan receipts and assign different bill items to different people. The system will then tally up totals for each person involved and generate payment requests with Apple Cash. That way, fellow iPhone and Apple Watch users can approve those payments right away and ensure their dinner debts are paid in full. Apple Health Plus Another big addition reportedly coming to iOS 27 is the new Apple Health Plus service, which combines health and fitness with AI personalization. Originally, rumors suggested that this would be some kind of AI doctor, but apparently, this won't be the case anymore. Likely because Apple didn't want to have to deal with the legal intricacies associated with medical advice. Instead, the idea is said to have had some elements "repurposed and introduced" with iOS 27. How much remains isn't clear, but the chances are this AI will monitor the health data that's collected by Apple devices -- including Apple Watch. This will presumably lead to personalized recommendations on how to maintain a healthier and fitter lifestyle, either in terms of workouts or by alerting you to possible medical problems before they get serious. Though I suspect it will fall short of making actual recommendations, and instead push you to visit a human doctor. Improvements to Shortcuts Shortcuts have been available on iOS for a few years, and are an excellent way to automate regular tasks to save you some time and energy. The downside is that the process is not very user-friendly, and unless you know exactly what you're doing, it can be rather intimidating. iOS 27 is set to introduce much-needed improvements, with help from Apple Intelligence. Rather than configuring a shortcut all by yourself, this update will apparently let you tell your phone to do all the hard work for you. All you'll need to do is offer a short prompt describing exactly what you need to get done. Professional camera features There's no shortage of professional camera apps on the App Store, but all the good ones either cost money to download or rely on paid subscriptions. That could change with iOS 27, with reports claiming that the Apple camera app will add some more professional-style features. Part of this change will apparently involve the ability to tweak extra camera settings, such as depth-of-field or exposure. These sorts of settings can be altered on certain Android phones and standalone cameras, so it's good to see that they're finally coming to the official iPhone app. Similarly, Apple is apparently offering the ability to customize the app's interface to make it easier to find certain settings and modes. That includes the ability to add certain features to the camera widget bar. AirPlay alternatives (EU only) This update may only apply to users in the EU, because it hinges on Apple complying with the Digital Markets Act. But those new rules could see Apple AirPlay's monopoly over video casting crumble. Meaning that other casting protocols, like Google Cast, could get native support as part of the iOS 27 update. Obviously, it's going to take time for developers to take advantage of those new rules, especially if it's only available in the EU. So while we don't know how long it will take for AirPlay alternatives to get their due, it might still happen in the near future. I just hope it doesn't stay exclusive to the EU for long. Liquid Glass customization slider Liquid Glass might be controversial among some groups, but it's not going anywhere anytime soon. However, iOS 27 is expected to give you some more power over how Liquid Glass looks, beyond the basic "clear" and "opaque" options that were made available in iOS 26's accessibility menu. iOS 27 will apparently offer a slider that lets you fine-tune the Liquid Glass effects across your entire system. This was originally intended for iOS 26, but it seems Apple was struggling with the technical challenges of applying the slider to the entire system -- and could only get it to work on the home screen clock. Which isn't exactly the most useful place to have customizable transparency. Reports suggest this will be applied to app folders, home screen elements, navigation bars and other areas of the software. iPhone Fold optimization We are not expecting Apple to reveal any details about the upcoming iPhone Fold (or iPhone Ultra), but that doesn't mean the foldable's presence won't be felt in iOS 27. Since this is the very first foldable Apple has ever produced, the company is going to have to ensure iOS 27 can adapt to the Fold's unique design. Specifically, the fact that the phone will feature two screens of wildly different sizes. iOS 27 will need to be able to transition between the 5.3-inch cover display and 7.8-inch folding display pretty seamlessly -- either shrinking or expanding what's happening, depending on the context. iOS is also going to need to adapt to a different aspect ratio, since the screens are expected to be shorter and wider than traditional iPhones. Not to mention the fact that it's going to need iPadOS-esque multitasking support. We don't expect Apple to directly highlight these changes before the iPhone Fold is revealed in September. However, eagle-eyed nerds may be able to spot a few hints on stage during the keynote, and even more after the iOS 27 beta releases later this month. Your old iPhone can run iOS 27, just don't expect the cool features
This story is part of our complete Apple WWDC coverage Updated less than 1 minute ago Apple made a big deal about iOS 27 supporting older iPhones at WWDC 2026, and on paper, it sounds great. If your iPhone is running iOS 26, it will also run iOS 27, which means phones going all the way back to the iPhone 11 are supported. But the catch in the fine print is that most of the good stuff stays behind a velvet rope. So what do older iPhones actually get? You are not the fun bits. You get the UI improvements, including the option to personalize Liquid Glass with a new slider that takes it from ultra-clear to fully tinted. You also get smaller treats like custom EQ for AirPods, Safari AI tabs, faster app launches, and snappier AirDrop transfers. These features are nice to have but they are not the headline features Apple spent the keynote bragging about. Which features need a shiny new phone? This is where it stings. To run Apple's most powerful on-device AI model, you need an iPhone 17 Pro or iPhone Air, an iPad with M4 and 12GB of memory, or a Mac with M3 and 12GB of memory. The base iPhone 17 doesn't even make the cut because it only has 8GB of RAM, while Apple Intelligence now requires 12GB for the best experience. Recommended Videos That means features like improved dictation accuracy and the ability to change the expressivity and pace of Siri's voice are off-limits unless you own one of Apple's newest, priciest devices. Everyone else gets the watered-down version that uses Apple's cloud servers, so it runs slower than the on-device model. Also, some AI features, such as image generation, come with daily limits, since they run on Apple's servers. If you want to expand that limit, you'll need an iCloud+ plan, which also adds extra features to Home cameras. It's a clever bit of marketing. Apple gets to say iOS 27 reaches the masses, while quietly making sure the features you actually want are reserved for the people who upgrade. If you were hoping your trusty old iPhone would feel brand new this fall, I'd temper those expectations.

Apple announces iOS 27 with speedy app launches, Siri AI, and Liquid Glass refinements for your iPhone
The performance improvements are real, the search rebuild is overdue, and the fact that it runs on every iPhone 11 and newer means almost nobody gets left behind. This story is part of our complete Apple WWDC coverage Updated less than 2 minutes ago Apple announced iOS 27 at WWDC 2026, and the message this year is quite simple: this one is faster, more polished, and comes loaded with new Apple Intelligence features, including the new Siri AI. It isn't the most visually dramatic update, but it addresses some of the most frustrating aspects of using iOS. The headline performance numbers, if you ask me, are significant. With iOS 27, Apple claims 30% faster app launches, 80% faster AirDrop transfers (something that I'm personally quite excited about), and enhanced responsiveness for older iPhones. Clearly, the 'Snow Leopard' style upgrade is fixing all the underlying plumbing, but there's more to it than just refinement. What are the most important new features in iOS 27? The Liquid Glass design language introduced with iOS 26 gets a transparency slider, so that you can dial the glass effect down if it's too much for you. Icons have also been updated; they now look sharper with additional refraction layers. Apple is also removing gaps in toolbars and sidebars for a more uniform look. Recommended Videos Apple has rebuilt Search from scratch, replacing its aging Spotlight index with a new system that indexes device content upon updating for more relevant and faster results. iCloud Shared Albums now allows Android and Windows users to share pictures, a long-overdue feature for anyone living in a mixed-device household. The popular Apple apps also get new abilities. Apple Maps, for instance, gets an upgraded Flyover with richer aerial imagery, while Health adds more advanced cycle tracking alongside perimenopause and menopause support. Apple Mail gets a new ranking system to help you find what you're actually looking for. What's new with Apple Intelligence and Siri? Image Playground can now generate images in almost any style, including realistic ones, and it works across more platforms and aspect ratios than before. Siri now runs on Apple's Foundation Models combined with Google's Gemini technology, making it significantly more capable and conversational than before. It now supports longer, natural conversations (with personal awareness), with back-and-forth follow-up questions that might require accessing data on the screen via Visual Intelligence or other apps. It can also write, edit, and proofread virtually everything that you enter as text. Apple's new "Siri AI" comes with an intuitive look with a wave-like animation that appears from within the Dynamic Island. The assistant also gets its own standalone app, much like AI chatbots like ChatGPT and Claude already have. When can you download iOS 27 and which iPhones are compatible? Passwords, Safari, and Messages all receive deeper Apple Intelligence integration, and the Shortcuts app gets a significant upgrade, wherein you can create new shortcut by simply describing it. AirPods also gain Custom EQ for the first time. Apple released the developer beta of iOS 27 on June 8, 2026, immediately after the WWDC 2026 keynote ended. No paid developer account is required. The public beta arrives in July, while the stable iOS 27 release is expected to roll out alongside the iPhone 18 lineup in September 2026. For those wondering about compatibility, iOS 27 supports all the iPhones that currently support iOS 26, including iPhone 11 and iPhone SE second generation and newer. Which devices will qualify for iOS 27, Apple's next major update
(NEXSTAR) - It's that time of year again. Apple is hosting its annual Worldwide Developers Conference, unveiling what is ahead for its tech. That includes its next major software update, iOS 27. Apple broke from its numerical tradition last year, jumping from iOS 18 to iOS 26 to more closely align with its launch year, and will continue that pattern this year. What are some new features in iOS 27? Also similar to last year, AI -- in this case, Apple Intelligence -- is a focal point for the next major iOS update. That includes a "new Siri AI," with its own app, according to Apple. Siri will be "an even more capable AI assistant with expanded intelligence to be more helpful every day" as part of the update. You'll find new AI editing tools for your photos, too, and will be able to use your Camera to perform a visual search, with Siri's help (a similar feature already exists). While on a call, "Call Context" will find "relevant information from across your apps," like a flight confirmation code while calling an airline, Apple explains. There's also an emphasis on security, including child safety features to control which apps your child has access to, limit "time allowances" on apps, and approve new websites via text before they are opened. Another feature, Communication Safety, aims to "protect children from viewing or sharing nudity in Messages, FaceTime, and more." "It now also intervenes before children see gore or violence in shared images and videos," according to Apple. If you were never a fan of Liquid Glass, you can expect an update to that as well. A new slider will be available through iOS 27, allowing you to adjust the glassiness of elements to enhance readability. The new update will also make app launches and AirDrop transfers faster. Which devices can -- and cannot -- get iOS 27? Simply, if your iPhone has iOS 26, you'll be able to get iOS 27. There are some differences with other devices, however. First, these devices will be eligible for iOS 27: * iPhone 11 models and newer * iPhone SE, 2nd generation and later * iPad Pro (M4 and later), iPad Pro 12.9-inch (4th generation and later), iPad Pro 11-inch (2nd generation and later), iPad Air 13-inch (M2 and later), iPad Air 11-inch (M2, M3, and M4), iPad Air 11-inch (4th generation and later), iPad (A16), iPad (9th generation and later), iPad mini (A17 Pro), and iPad mini (6th generation and later) * Watch SE 3, Watch Series 10 and 11, and Watch Ultra 2 and 3 Notably, some older iPad models that got iOS 26 will not be eligible for iOS 27. That includes 3rd generation iPad Pro 12.9-inch, 1st generation iPad Pro 11-inch, 3rd generation iPad Air, 8th generation iPad, and 5th generation iPad mini. Many older Apple Watches will also no longer receive the next iOS update. Not sure which device you have? On iPhone, open the Settings app, then go to General, and About. Apple offers steps on identifying iPads using the model number. When will iOS 27 be available? As it usually does, Apple did not give a specific launch date for iOS 27 on Monday. Instead, it vaguely announced that the new features will be available in fall. If it's like previous updates, however, iOS 27 will likely be available in September. If you participate in the Apple Developer Program, you can test these features now. If you're in the Apple Beta Software Program, you'll be able to experience a public beta version of iOS 26 next month, according to Apple.

The most important Apple iOS 27 feature may be the one many users can't access
Apple's AI ambitions are entering a new phase. Reports suggest that iOS 27 will introduce a new generation of advanced Apple Intelligence features, but not every device will be able to access them. As AI becomes increasingly tied to hardware performance, Apple appears to be drawing a sharper line between software updates and true AI readiness. For years, software updates have been viewed as great equalisers. A new operating system arrived, users downloaded it, and millions of devices gained access to the latest features overnight. Artificial intelligence, however, appears to be rewriting that equation. Apple's next major software update, iOS 27, is expected to introduce a new wave of Apple Intelligence capabilities. Yet the conversation surrounding these features is not centred on what they can do. Instead, it revolves around a more intriguing question: who will actually be able to use them? The answer points toward a broader transformation unfolding across the technology industry. AI is no longer just software. Increasingly, it is becoming a function of hardware capability. The latest reports suggest that Apple is preparing more sophisticated on-device AI experiences, including improvements to Siri, voice interactions, and contextual intelligence. These systems demand substantial computing resources, memory, and neural processing power. As a result, some of the most advanced features may remain exclusive to newer devices such as the iPhone 17 series and select M4-powered products. This distinction is significant because it highlights a shift in how innovation is delivered. Traditionally, smartphones were upgraded for better cameras, larger batteries, or improved displays. Today, AI performance is emerging as a defining factor in device value. What makes this transition particularly interesting is that Apple has consistently positioned privacy as a central pillar of its AI strategy. Rather than sending every request to the cloud, the company continues to push intelligence directly onto the device. This approach offers greater control over personal data, but it also raises the technical requirements necessary to run advanced AI models efficiently. Consequently, the gap between devices that can run AI and devices that can run advanced AI is beginning to widen. The implications extend beyond Apple's ecosystem. Across the technology landscape, AI is becoming increasingly dependent on specialised hardware. The future of user experience may therefore be determined not only by software innovation but by the silicon powering it. As AI assistants become more conversational, context-aware, and capable of understanding user intent, the smartphone itself is evolving into something different. It is no longer merely a communication device. It is becoming an intelligence platform. This evolution raises a compelling consideration for consumers. In the coming years, purchasing decisions may not revolve around screen size or camera quality alone. Instead, users may evaluate devices based on a new metric: how much intelligence they can access. The arrival of iOS 27 may therefore represent more than another software upgrade. It could signal the beginning of an era where AI capabilities are no longer universally distributed, but selectively unlocked through hardware. The real story is not that Apple is bringing more AI to its devices. It is that the future of AI may increasingly belong to those devices built specifically to handle it. Did Apple Just Reveal the Biggest Feature Coming to iOS 27?
Apple has officially revealed a significant update to Siri as the centerpiece of iOS 27, signaling a major shift in its artificial intelligence (AI) strategy. Under the tagline "All Systems Glow," this update addresses long-standing criticisms of Siri by introducing a redesigned interface, enhanced functionality, and deeper integration across Apple's ecosystem. This move underscores Apple's ambition to reestablish itself as a leader in AI innovation, using its ecosystem to deliver a more seamless and efficient user experience. The video below from SaranByte gives us more details on iOS 27. A Smarter, More Context-Aware Siri The most notable feature of iOS 27 is the complete overhaul of Siri, now equipped with a chatbot-style interface designed for more conversational and context-aware interactions. A key addition, the "Search Ask" feature, integrates Siri directly into the Dynamic Island, allowing users to interact with the assistant without disrupting their workflow. This redesign also includes visually appealing updates, such as glowing UI effects and dark backgrounds, which not only enhance usability but also give Siri a modern and polished aesthetic. These improvements aim to make Siri smarter, more intuitive and better equipped to handle complex queries with precision. Beyond aesthetics, Siri's conversational abilities have been significantly enhanced. The assistant now remembers the context of previous interactions, allowing for more natural and fluid exchanges. For instance, you could ask Siri to "find the nearest Italian restaurant," and then follow up with, "What are their hours?" without needing to restate the subject. This level of contextual understanding positions Siri as a more reliable and indispensable tool for everyday tasks. Dynamic Island: Transforming User Interaction Dynamic Island plays a pivotal role in redefining how users interact with Siri. By embedding Siri's responses into this interactive space, Apple has streamlined access to information and assistance. Whether you're managing your calendar, sending a quick message, or navigating to a destination, Siri's presence in the Dynamic Island ensures that help is always just a tap away. This integration minimizes interruptions, allowing users to multitask more effectively while maintaining focus on their primary activities. The Dynamic Island's functionality extends beyond convenience. It reinforces Apple's broader design philosophy of creating a unified and efficient user experience. By centralizing Siri's responses within this feature, Apple has made it easier for users to interact with the assistant in a way that feels natural and unobtrusive. This approach not only simplifies multitasking but also highlights Apple's commitment to innovation in user interface design. Addressing AI Challenges and Learning from Competitors Apple's decision to overhaul Siri comes at a time when competition in AI is more intense than ever. Rivals like ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini have set new standards in natural language processing (NLP) and contextual understanding, areas where Siri has historically struggled. These shortcomings have led to user frustration and a decline in trust. With iOS 27, Apple is directly addressing these challenges by using its ecosystem advantage to deliver a more capable and contextually aware voice assistant. One of the key strategies behind this update is Siri's deeper integration into core apps like Messages, Calendar and Notes. For example, you can now ask Siri to "schedule a meeting with Sarah," and it will automatically check your calendar, send an invite through Messages and create a reminder in Notes, all without requiring additional input. This level of integration not only enhances Siri's functionality but also demonstrates Apple's ability to deliver a cohesive and efficient user experience that sets it apart from competitors. WWDC 2026: A Defining Moment for Apple's AI Vision The upcoming WWDC 2026 event represents a critical opportunity for Apple to showcase its advancements in AI. Expectations are high, with both users and industry experts eager to see if the company can deliver on its promises. Success at this event could redefine Apple's role in the AI landscape, while failure could further erode trust in its capabilities. To meet these expectations, Apple must ensure that Siri's new features are not only innovative but also practical and reliable. The glowing UI effects and seamless integration are more than just design enhancements, they symbolize a renewed commitment to excellence and user satisfaction. By addressing past criticisms and delivering a voice assistant that is both functional and intuitive, Apple has the chance to rebuild trust and reshape public perception. The Future of Siri and Apple's AI Strategy The success of Siri's redesign could have far-reaching implications for Apple's position in the AI industry. By addressing past weaknesses and capitalizing on its ecosystem strengths, Apple has the potential to set a new benchmark for voice assistants. However, the stakes are high. Failure to meet user expectations could leave Apple trailing behind competitors in the rapidly evolving AI landscape. As WWDC 2026 approaches, several key questions remain at the forefront of the discussion: * Will Siri's redesign deliver the seamless and intuitive experience users have been waiting for? * Can Apple close the gap with competitors like ChatGPT and Gemini in AI innovation? * How will deeper ecosystem integration redefine the way users interact with their devices? The answers to these questions will determine whether iOS 27 becomes a defining milestone for Apple or a missed opportunity.
