Just ahead of Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in June, Bloomberg has published leaked renders of what Apple's planned AI upgrade could look like on iPhone -- including a brand-new Siri app meant to rival ChatGPT and other AI chatbots -- as well as how Siri's new capabilities will be woven throughout the operating system. The images were produced by Bloomberg based on what it saw and learned from sources. While you'll still be able to press a button in iOS 27 to trigger Siri, the animation and response will now emerge from the iPhone's Dynamic Island -- that's the black pill-shaped area at the top of the screen that today houses Live Activities, the real-time updates and interactive displays from apps that appear directly on the phone's Home Screen. This mode will work best for quick voice queries or searches, much like how people use Siri currently. A new mode, however, will put Siri-powered search within easy reach, capitalizing on people's muscle memory for swiping down on their screen to access Spotlight Search -- a built-in way to find information from both your phone and the web in one place. The swipe-down gesture will still open search, but now those searches will draw on the AI-powered Siri, which includes a rebuilt AI model that uses Google's Gemini AI technology under the hood for added intelligence. From here, iPhone users can search, launch apps, start messages, ask about the weather, add calendar appointments, search their notes, and trigger app shortcuts, Bloomberg reports, with results displayed in formatted text in a card-style interface that also emerges from the Dynamic Island. Apple's approach to AI is strikingly similar to its earlier multi-billion dollar partnership with Google that made Google the default search engine on iPhone. Just as building a search engine from scratch was never in Apple's playbook, AI presents a similar calculus -- it's too expensive and complex to go it alone, at least right now. So Apple is working with outside partners for AI technology that users want today, while simultaneously building out its own models, including local AI, that runs on local devices rather than the cloud -- an approach that allows Apple to lean into it privacy brand without needing to catch up. Bloomberg also notes there will be a new standalone Siri app -- as previously reported -- designed to compete directly with chatbots like ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and others. The app will surface your past chat history and allow you to upload documents and photos, in addition to text. Scale, as ever, is Apple's advantage. While ChatGPT now has 900 million weekly active users, Apple's install base (all devices, not just iPhone) is 2.5 billion -- meaning the company has an unmatched runway to introduce AI to people who haven't yet adopted standalone AI tools.

Apple's iOS 27 Could Be Siri's Biggest AI Reinvention Yet

He admits to being somewhat fascinated by the Cambridge coffee webcam back in the Roaring '90s. A new Siri is on the horizon, and we're getting a better look -- literally -- at how Apple's new AI assistant will appear and perform when it's unveiled later this year. In a new report from Bloomberg, the news outlet created illustrations showing how Siri could look with the launch of iOS 27, the updated operating system for iPhones. Bloomberg's Mark Gurman also outlined how people will be able to use Siri, which will pivot from a reactive assistant (for single, linear tasks) to an AI-agentic chatbot, capable of managing complex workflows without needing step-by-step guidance. Apple is scheduled to launch iOS 27 in mid-September and could discuss the updates at its Worldwide Developers Conference, scheduled for June 8-12. "The images are based on information viewed by Bloomberg and people with knowledge of the company's plans who asked not to be identified because the software isn't yet public," Gurman wrote. An Apple representative didn't immediately respond to a request for comment. Siri will look, feel and function differently after iOS 27 launches. It will live inside the Dynamic Island, always available to help iPhone users answer questions and perform tasks in the operating system and apps, Gurman said. The Dynamic Island is a wide, pill-shaped region at the top of the home screen on certain iPhone models where you can see system alerts, apps running in the background, and track ride shares and food delivery. The Dynamic Island is available on iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max and all models of the iPhone 15, 16 and 17. You'll be able to launch Siri on iPhone in different ways, Gurman said. The original way -- saying "hey Siri" or holding down the power button -- will activate a Siri animation in the Dynamic Island and is still ideal for voice queries and search. The second way to launch Siri is entirely new. By swiping down from the top center of the iPhone to launch a Search or Ask interface, you can either type or speak your question or command. When Siri responds, the results will appear in a text card that pops up from the Dynamic Island. You can swipe down further to initiate a conversation with the Siri chatbot, Gurman said. In the Search or Ask field, iPhone users will be able to choose other AI agents to handle their queries, Gurman said. A drop-down menu of AI agents, such as ChatGPT or Gemini, will appear when people click a button. Apple has a partnership with OpenAI for ChatGPT and has also tested integrating Gemini and Anthropic's Claude with Siri, Gurman said. The new Search or Ask array will also include a weather panel and Siri Suggestions, which are already on iPhones and typically show eight of your most used apps, Gurman said. The Notification Center isn't going away, Gurman said. Right now, you can access it by swiping down from the top left or the top center, but with iOS 27, you'll get it only by swiping down from the top left. The new Siri app abilities As reported before, Siri will no longer be limited to answering rudimentary questions or performing typical tasks, such as calling someone or operating smart home devices. The new Siri will be much more AI-capable, partly using Google Gemini technology, to search the web and analyze on-screen content, Gurman said. There will also be a dedicated Siri app, following in the footsteps of other phone AI apps such as ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude. According to Gurman, the home screen of the Siri app will display a conversation history, allowing you to return to previous chats. You'll be able to use voice or text to converse with Siri, and also upload documents and photos for Siri to analyze. Siri will show rich text cards for people who ask for news, weather forecasts and sports scores, but will also show results based on the person's data, such as text messages, emails, appointments and more, Gurman said. Gurman said that Siri will be able to write emails or text messages based on information from the internet and your device. Siri will also be able to scan your appointment calendar to let you know when you're booked or available. Siri will also be integrated into the iPhone's camera app, Gurman said, enabling people to have them analyzed by a different AI agent or via a Google search, as they can now with Google Lens. Siri reportedly won't do it all In another report from The Information, Apple will use WWDC to show how well iPhones can process many AI queries on-device, without relying entirely on external data centers and the cloud, thanks to the chips used in iPhones, Macs and Apple Watches. However, Siri won't be able to handle all AI queries, the report said. The more complex ones will be farmed out to Gemini, which CNET has reported on before. This two-pronged approach will help Apple show that it values customer privacy through on-device AI functionality and also save money by not having to build huge data centers, The Information report said. The report said that Google's Gemini will train a smaller AI model that can run on Apple devices.

These new iOS 27 renders hint at Siri's big redesign

According to Gurman, you'll be able to open this new chat bubble by swiping down from the center of the top edge of the display. It will reportedly work anywhere in iOS 27, similar to how Android users can start a Gemini chat by tapping and holding the home button, regardless of what app they're in. The new standalone Siri app shown in Bloomberg's renders resembles ChatGPT's chatbot layout, with a pill-shaped query box, buttons for adding attachments and activating voice mode, and chat history. Past chats will reportedly be viewable as a list or as a collection of rectangles, similar to how notes are laid out as blocks in Google Keep. Bloomberg also offers a glimpse at Apple's updated Camera app, which is rumored to include a new Siri mode and more customization options. The renders show a new menu of widgets for adding (or removing) controls in the Camera app, as well as a "Siri" option nestled between the "Photo" and "Portrait" modes. A similar AI "Tools" editing option also appears in Bloomberg's render of the updated Photos app, which will reportedly include three new AI editing features, along with the current "Clean Up" option. Apple is reportedly redesigning the iPhone's interface around the new Siri. After nearly two years of delays and a $250 million settlement along the way, Apple is preparing to reintroduce the new Siri at WWDC 2026. Bloomberg's Mark Gurman has published an early preview of the update with illustrations that provide a glimpse of how Apple has redesigned the iPhone's interface to put the Gemini-powered AI agent front and center. "The company often tests multiple designs of features internally, and the final version set to be introduced to the public in June could differ," Gurman warns, before stating Apple could release the new Siri as early as this September. As you can see from the illustrations Bloomberg shared, Siri will now live inside the iPhone's dynamic island. As before, you'll be able to wake the assistant by saying "Siri" or holding down your phone's power button. However, Apple will also allow users to swipe down from the top center of the iPhone to bring up a new "Search or Ask" interface that incorporates elements from the existing Search interface found in iOS 26. Here, you'll see old standbys like Siri Suggestions -- a list of eight suggested apps -- alongside new elements. Gurman suggests Apple will allow people to use the interface to launch apps, start text messages, add calendar appointments, search through notes and more. "Results are displayed in a rich text card that pops out of the Dynamic Island," he explains. "Users can swipe down further to open a chatbot-style conversation inside the Siri app." Gurman reports Apple is also considering giving users the option to access other AI services, including ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini through this new interface. Due to the new prominence of Siri, users will need to pull down from the top left of their phone to access the Notification Center. Apple will also offer a dedicated Siri app that's designed to compete with the likes of ChatGPT and Claude. The software will allow users to converse with Siri through text and voice, with support for photo and document uploads included. And as with other chatbots, you can browse through your conversation history to continue previous chats. Unsurprisingly, Apple also plans to integrate Siri more deeply into the Camera and Photos apps. A new dedicated mode that's designed to replace the company's existing Visual Intelligence feature will allow people to snap a photo and put it through Google reverse image search. Users can also turn to a third-party AI agent for photo analysis. Over in the Photos app, Apple will reportedly offer new "Reframe" and "Extend" tools that, as their names suggest, will allow you to change the perspective of an image or use AI to generate visual elements beyond the frame of a photo. Underpinning all these new features is a smarter Siri that can search the web, and draw on screen context and the user's personal information to complete tasks. "In the interface planned by Apple, you can ask it for times you are available for appointments before scheduling something and for overlapping events," says Gurman. At the start of the year, Apple confirmed reports that it was planning to use Google's Gemini models to help power the new version of Siri. Following the company's now infamous WWDC 2024 presentation, The Information reported that the Siri demo the company showed off at the conference was more of an elaborate concept video.

From Siri revamp to new tools: Here's how Apple could rival Gemini (with Gemini) in iOS 27

We're just over a week away from WWDC 2026, where Apple will showcase the next generation of its operating systems, including iOS 27. This is expected to be one of the most important announcements from Apple in years, primarily because we're expecting a wildly different Siri with Gemini integration, and a more capable suite of Apple Intelligence tools. Now, Bloomberg has given us an extensive look at what to expect from Apple's Siri overhaul, alongside additional information about iOS 27. First and foremost, the Siri redesign is taking on a couple of new faces. The company will reportedly step away from the glowing edges that currently show up when Siri is activated. Instead, the assistant will pop out of the Dynamic Island. It's also getting a new gesture: users could swipe down from the top center of the iPhone to open a new Siri interface where they can type to search. This new interface will apparently include information that shows up as Siri Suggestions in current iOS versions. That includes suggested apps and quick access to frequently used functions. This also ties in neatly with the much-anticipated Siri chatbot app. Bloomberg reports that the new Siri interface will show results in the form of rich text cards. Users can swipe down to open the card in the dedicated Siri app and ask follow-up questions. Apple has been working on opening Siri to third-party AI agents, and the new Siri interface will reportedly include a button to switch between AI agents installed on the iPhone. But Siri itself will also be smarter: it will finally be able to understand on-device content and use it to help get things done. You'll be able to ask it to check your calendar for free time slots or overlapping events. The update will also give the built-in camera app a host of new features. Siri will now be integrated directly into the app as a dedicated mode. It'd replace the current Visual Intelligence tool, which is accessed using the Camera Control button. Additionally, the camera app will be more customizable. Users will be able to replace, rearrange, or remove shortcuts from the top row of the camera interface. This would be roughly in line with at least one Android brand's camera app. Apple Intelligence could also finally be more useful. The report suggests that new Apple Intelligence features are coming with iOS 27, including Reframe and Extend options in the Photos apps. As the names suggest, Reframe will allow users to change the perspective of a photo after it's been shot, while Extend will let users expand images and recreate areas that were cropped out when the photo was taken. The Shortcuts app will also get some AI features and will let users create automations using natural language. This could let more users take advantage of Shortcuts, which are already incredibly powerful and great for automating tasks on iPhone. iOS 27 will also include a built-in grammar checking tool, the ability to create AI wallpapers, and a revamped Image Playground app. Apple is expected to announce iOS 27 alongside other software updates at the WWDC keynote on June 8. So iPhone owners who wish they had the AI features seen on Pixel and Galaxy phones should circle this date on their calendars.

iOS 27 might convince a lot of people to upgrade to a new iPhone

iOS 27 will be unveiled in just over a week, and rumors indicate there are lots of reasons why the new software might push more people than usual to upgrade to a new iPhone. iOS 27 compatibility list won't tell the whole story Every year, Apple launches a major new version of iOS at the same time as new iPhones debut. There's a marketing benefit to this, as seeing all the new features in iOS might motivate users to buy a new, more capable iPhone. But rumors indicate that could be more true than ever this year. Apple has a strong history of supporting older devices with its latest software versions. iOS 26, for example, is compatible with iPhones released up to six years prior. iOS 27, per rumors, is expected to drop support for four iPhone models. However, the biggest reason Apple might see more iPhone upgrades this year isn't due to those dropped models. Rather, it's because many of iOS 27's best features will be limited to AI-supported iPhones. Why iOS 27's AI focus could motivate iPhone purchases Apple Intelligence launched in 2024 with strict hardware requirements. You have to have an iPhone 15 Pro or newer to use Apple's AI features. iPhone 15 and 15 Plus, and all older iPhones, do not support Apple Intelligence. So even though iOS 27 will likely be compatible with iPhone 12 and newer, anyone with an iPhone 12, iPhone 13, iPhone 14, or even the iPhone 15 (non-Pro) will miss out on its best features. Before now, Apple Intelligence arguably hasn't provided enough reason to motivate upgrades for most users. But in iOS 27, that could very well change. The biggest AI draw will be Siri itself. iOS 27's new Siri is poised to be a massive upgrade for users, with a Gemini-inspired LLM foundation, chatbot interface, dedicated app, onscreen and personal context awareness, and much more. All signs indicate that if your iPhone doesn't support Apple Intelligence, you'll be stuck with the old Siri. Similarly, the vast majority of rumors about iOS 27's new features mention an AI requirement. New Photos app features, custom wallpaper generation, subtitles for all videos, natural language Shortcuts creation, the Camera app's new Siri mode, Safari improvements, and more -- all tied to AI. Apple will have some changes that benefit older iPhones too. But more than ever before, it sounds like iOS 27 will be an AI-heavy update. In a bombshell report barely a week before the WWDC keynote on June 8, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman has concluded his string of iOS 27 leaks with his biggest one yet: a full report of how different the new Siri will look across the system. It was only about 18 months ago when Siri's new "glow" interface landed on iPhones, and now it appears Apple is shifting to a new darker interface. As Gurman describes, Apple has "redesigned Siri for modern iPhone hardware," giving it a home in the Dynamic Island, a chatbot of its own, and full integration with the Camera app. Gurman reports Siri will still be triggered by its "Siri" wake word or by holding down the power button, but rather than an on-screen animation, it will now show "a redesigned Siri animation in the Dynamic Island." Additionally, users will also be able to "swipe down from the top center of the iPhone anywhere in the system" to launch a new "Search or Ask" field for silent interactions using the keyboard. In the current system, users need to double-tap the bottom edge of the screen to bring up the Type to Siri interface. Gurman describes the interface for the new Siri, which you can also see above: From there, users can launch apps, start text messages, ask about the weather, add calendar appointments, search through notes, trigger shortcuts within apps, or search the web using Apple's new AI-powered search system, which competes with tools like Perplexity. Results are displayed in a rich text card that pops out of the Dynamic Island. Users can swipe down further to open a chatbot-style conversation inside the Siri app. ... When users ask for information, Siri presents rich text cards and results for topics such as people, places and news headlines. Similar cards also appear for weather forecasts and sports scores, as well as results pulled from a user's own data, including notes, text messages, emails, contacts, calendar appointments and reminders. Based on the images, this is a shift from the previous colorful Apple Intelligence scheme. When it launched in 2024, the branding followed a gradient of blue, purple, pink, and orange, which extended to the Siri glow around the screen. While you can see a slight rainbow reflection around the search bar, based on these images, the new Siri will be much more restrained. Of course, the new look is just the first part of the Siri rebrand. The chatbot will also be a lot smarter, as Gurman reports, with a greater understanding of what's on the screen: "In the interface planned by Apple, you can ask it for times you are available for appointments before scheduling something and for overlapping events. You can also ask the assistant to write emails, notes or text messages using information from the web and device content. That could include asking for a note to be created about how to fix a car engine or an email including your calendar availability." Additionally, Siri will include the delayed features announced in 2024, including the ability to understand personal data, conduct actions within apps, and analyze on-screen content. Finally, Siri will also gain a new home in the Camera app, which "would replace today's Visual Intelligence experience and let users take photos and have them analyzed by a third-party AI agent or put into a Google reverse image search." Images show a "Siri" selection between "Video" and "Photo" at the bottom of the screen. You can expect the new Siri to debut at WWDC on June 8, following months-long beta testing ahead of wide release in September.

Leaked iOS 27 screenshot renders give us our first look at the new Siri app -- but there's way more that I'm excited about

Apple has been lagging for the better part of the last year when it comes to the AI wars, but a recent batch of leaked screenshot renders convinces me that the company is moving in the right direction. Shared by Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, these images give us our first big look at iOS 27, including a dedicated Siri app, overhauled search functions, and new AI editing tools. While the illustrations are based on internal descriptions obtained by Bloomberg, they nonetheless make WWDC 2026 a bit more exciting -- which is where we'll likely get our first official preview of Apple's next mobile software. We're less than a couple of weeks away, and I suspect these new Siri and AI features will also make their way in some capacity to Apple's other platforms, like iPadOS 27 and the next macOS. There's a lot to unpack here, so let me break it all down and tell you what has me most excited. Dedicated Siri app looks familiar Without question, the screenshot renders give us a clear idea of the long-rumored, dedicated Siri app that's expected to arrive with iOS 27. Most notably, the new Siri is tipped to live within the Dynamic Island, where it'll act as an always-on agent ready to perform whatever task you throw at it. Plus, it works across the entire operating system and can be more proactive because of how it draws on personal information and web data to complete tasks. This looks and feels a lot like Gemini's task automation feature that I tested firsthand with the Galaxy S26. If this new Siri can place a Dunkin' Donuts order through DoorDash just like Gemini, then Apple is going to be well-positioned. Similar to other chatbots, the new Siri app will also house your previous chat history within a conversational interface that packages a voice mode, text field, and attachment picker -- looking very much like the standalone Gemini and ChatGPT apps. There are also new Search and Ask functions within the Siri app that are accessed by swiping down from the top center of the interface at any time, which relegates Notifications access to a swipe down from the left side. This new interface is much more suitable for typing to Siri, but it'll also surface access to frequently used apps, recent web searches, and more. Is Apple saying goodbye to Visual Intelligence? Another intriguing detail about the new Siri app is that it appears to be missing the one feature that keeps me glued to Gemini Live: the ability to tap into my phone's camera for real-time visual search. Even though this is exactly what Visual Intelligence is built for, the leaks suggest Apple could be phasing it out as a standalone feature with iOS 27 -- and simply integrating Siri's eyes directly into the native Camera app. The screenshot renders show that the iOS 27 Camera app will feature a dedicated Siri mode right on the bottom mode carousel. While it's a logical addition, I hope there's a shortcut within the Siri app to launch it as well. Nonetheless, it'll finally give Siri the ability to see what you're looking at so you can ask contextual questions. Beyond the AI integrations, these renders also reveal how the Camera app is evolving to appeal to enthusiasts. Specifically, the interface is becoming much more customizable, introducing a new Add Widgets panel for the features that matter most to mobile photographers -- like focal depth and precise exposure settings. Even though these changes don't indicate a true, fully manual mode, it's incredibly reassuring to see the stock Camera app continue to evolve. More AI tools for editing and automation New Apple Intelligence features were virtually nonexistent with the release of iOS 26, but Apple clearly intends to rectify that with iOS 27. The platform is finally gaining advanced AI editing tools to rival what Google and Samsung already offer with their flagship devices. Specifically, the Photos app appears to be getting new features called Reframe and Extend, which I suspect will use generative AI to do things like adding context elements to an existing photo. These tools are nothing new, of course, as I've been using them for a couple of years now on rival Android phones. Other new Apple Intelligence features expected to arrive include a system-wide grammar checker and a natural-language, prompt-based photo search tool. The latter sounds awfully similar to the Ask Photos feature that I first tried out with the Pixel 10 last fall, which has since been integrated as a native feature within Google Photos (which is also available on iPhone). Apple could also be planning a revamped Shortcuts app that can build complex automations using basic natural language. I really love this prospect because if you've ever tried to manually map out automations, you know they can quickly become incredibly time-consuming. Personally, I would much rather just speak what I want and let Apple Intelligence handle the rest. Additional AI tools rumored for iOS 27 include AI-generated wallpapers, a revamped Image Playground, and an updated Genmoji custom emoji creator. Based on what's been revealed so far, there's no arguing that Apple is going all-in on Apple Intelligence with iOS 27. While it's obvious that even more will be revealed at WWDC 2026 in a couple of weeks, these leaked features alone finally put the iPhone on equal footing with its rivals. First Look at AI Camera and Photos Features in iOS 27 Revealed

Apple is planning sweeping AI-driven upgrades to its Camera and Photos apps in iOS 27, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reports. The report offers a first look at the appearance of several major iOS 27 features that Apple plans to announce at its Worldwide Developers Conference on June 8. Reframe would allow users to change the perspective of a photo, while Extend uses AI to generate additional portions of an image, such as filling in the lower half of a building that was cut off in the original shot. Apple is also said to be testing natural language prompt-based photo editing, which would let users request specific edits by voice or text, such as cropping or adjusting colors. Gurman notes that this specific feature may not arrive in the first version of iOS 27. Elsewhere in iOS 27, the Shortcuts app is said to be getting a significant overhaul that would allow users to create automations using natural language. And we're fully expecting to learn about iOS 27 at WWDC 2026, the final Apple developers conference of the Tim Cook era. When the iPhone 18 launches in September, it's widely expected that it'll ship alongside iOS 27, as is usually the case with every new iPhone and every new iOS iteration. Apple still hasn't officially shown off iOS 27 yet, but there have been plenty of reports and leaks about what to expect from the mobile OS update. Here's everything you need to know about iOS 27 right now. iOS 27: Which iPhones will support it? To start, we should establish which iPhones will actually be able to run iOS 27. Every year, Apple phases out an older generation of devices, and a recent leak suggested that the following phones will be phased out this year: * iPhone 11 * iPhone 11 Pro * iPhone 11 Pro Max * iPhone SE (second generation) That means anything older than an iPhone 12 is probably not going to be able to run iOS 27. It's a tough business, but that's just how it works. Apple can't keep everyone happy forever. In addition, iOS 27 is sure to bring updates to Apple Intelligence, including a new AI Siri. Keep in mind that not all iPhones support Apple Intelligence, which is only compatible with the iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, iPhone 16, and newer Apple smartphones. iOS 27: All about AI Siri Easily the biggest feature coming to iOS 27 that we know of right now is the long-awaited AI-powered overhaul of Siri, Apple's iconic voice assistant. It was supposed to happen a long time ago, but internal delays have pushed its most likely debut timeline to the launch of iOS 27. On a basic level, what's changing here is that Siri is going to be turned into an AI chatbot with its own standalone app and with the ability to incorporate what's on the screen and personal context into responses, with the additional ability to perform actions between and within apps themselves. It'll be powered primarily by Google's Gemini model, though rumor has it that users will be able to use third-party models for Siri and other Apple Intelligence features, too, if they so desire. While Siri is getting its own app, that doesn't mean the way you interface with Siri will change that much, necessarily. A report from Bloomberg's Mark Gurman indicated that Siri in iOS 27 can still be activated by a wake word or by holding down the power button, same as ever, but there will also be a new interface built into the iPhone's Dynamic Island. You'll be able to make queries by swiping down from the top of the screen, and an additional swipe will bring you straight to the new chatbot interface for Siri. Gurman's report included some more tidbits about how Siri will play with the Photos and Camera apps, too. For instance, Photos will get the ability to use generative AI to add elements to photos that aren't already there, while the users will be able to snap a photo in Camera and instantly reverse image search it on Google. In summary, Apple is looking to catch up to the competition when it comes to having a sophisticated AI chatbot that lives in your phone, and it sounds like iOS 27 might finally bring us to that point. iOS 27: Other AI features Apple's new iOS revision might focus largely on integrating Siri into the Apple Intelligence ecosystem, but what about the already existing Apple Intelligence features in iOS? It turns out some of those will be improved with iOS 27, too. For example, a separate Mark Gurman report claimed that Image Playground and Genmoji will both get significant boosts to image quality in iOS 27. There will even be a new feature allowing users to generate custom phone wallpapers with AI. Outside of image generation, it sounds like there will also be a way for users to create custom app shortcuts using natural language prompts with Siri. Beyond that, Writing Tools will apparently be infused with more AI juice. It'll supposedly be better at offering feedback for things like syntax errors, not just basic spelling mistakes. We'll need to see this in action to truly judge how well it works, though. iOS 27: What about Liquid Glass? Last year, the Liquid Glass design language introduced in iOS 26 really ruffled some feathers. That said, you should probably not expect any major changes on that front. This information comes, once again, from Gurman at Bloomberg. He says Apple is not planning on making any sweeping changes to Liquid Glass, which isn't terribly surprising. While plenty of folks may not be huge fans of the design language, that fact doesn't appear to be driving people away from iPhones to any significant degree. In fact, the opposite is happening; iPhone sales are better than ever right now. All of that is to say that Apple might add some more customization options to Liquid Glass, but don't expect to be able to turn it off or anything like that. iOS 27: App changes As always, iOS 27 is certainly going to bring some other miscellaneous changes to various first-party apps. We don't yet have a comprehensive list of every change to expect, but there are a couple of intriguing reports out there. For instance, users will apparently be able to create custom widgets within the Camera app, giving them more fine control over which buttons appear on screen by default when opening the app. Weather is also getting a "Conditions" panel when looking at a page for a specific location. You'll be able to flip between information panels on things like wind and rain there. The Wallet app is also reportedly getting a pretty interesting new feature that will allow users to create custom passes. It's called "Create a Pass," and it will allegedly be able to scan photos of things like movie tickets and gym memberships in order to create a digital pass that lives in the Wallet app. While lots of services have built-in support for the Wallet app, there are also plenty that don't, and this feature could help bridge that gap. iOS 27: Don't forget about the iPhone Fold Lastly, we'd be remiss not to mention the iPhone Fold. There isn't a lot of concrete information yet about how iOS will adapt to the long-rumored device, but one has to assume that iOS 27 will, to some extent, work a little differently on the foldable iPhone. Actions like app multi-tasking, for example, will probably be possible on the iPhone Fold, meaning iOS 27 will need to natively support that sort of thing. Not every iOS revision is a big overhaul, but if nothing else, it sounds like iOS 27 will drastically change how users interact with Siri. In that sense, this could be one of the biggest iOS updates in a while.

Here's what you'll be able to do via the "Search or Ask" interface in iOS 27 for Siri: From there, users can launch apps, start text messages, ask about the weather, add calendar appointments, search through notes, trigger shortcuts within apps, or search the web using Apple's new AI-powered search system, which competes with tools like Perplexity. Results are displayed in a rich text card that pops out of the Dynamic Island. Users can swipe down further to open a chatbot-style conversation inside the Siri app. Apple has also been testing ways to open up iOS 27 to third-party AI agents installed through the App Store. The company already has a partnership with OpenAI's ChatGPT, and it has internally tested integrations for Siri and other AI features with Google's Gemini and Anthropic PBC's Claude. The Road to WWDC Apple first showed a "personalized Siri" at WWDC 2024 -- one that would understand your screen, your messages, your calendar. Then it spent 18 months explaining why it couldn't ship it. The company officially delayed the upgrade in March 2025, citing quality problems, and a class action lawsuit followed. A federal court approved a $250 million settlement earlier this month over claims Apple marketed AI features that "did not exist at the time." The rebuilt Siri's core functions won't run on Apple's own AI models. Take a photo, send it to a third-party AI -- Google for reverse image search, ChatGPT for analysis -- without leaving the camera. Apple is also adding AI editing tools to Photos: Reframe adjusts perspective, Extend fills in parts of an image that weren't in the original frame. iOS 27 may also get a natural-language Shortcuts redesign -- describe what you want automated, skip the workflow builder -- plus AI wallpaper generation and a systemwide grammar checker. Gurman notes the final designs could still change before June 8, as Apple regularly tests multiple versions internally before locking anything in for WWDC. The camera integration matters beyond the iPhone. Apple is developing camera-equipped AirPods and smart glasses -- both designed to feed visual data directly to Siri. The iOS 27 Camera mode is, in that sense, the first step in a broader bet: get users comfortable with visual AI on their phones before it moves to their ears and faces. Camera AirPods could arrive as early as late 2026; smart glasses are targeting 2027. The new Siri ships to consumers as early as September alongside the iPhone 18 Pro, the iPhone 18 Pro Max, and Apple's first foldable iPhone. It will be Tim Cook's last major product launch -- John Ternus takes over as CEO on September 1.

Apple is said to be leaning into a darker theme this year. This is because the new Siri interface apparently lacks a light-mode option and uses dark hues. It does seem to confirm our speculation on how Siri is evolving this year. According to Gurman, "the Search or Ask bar at the top of iOS 27 will have a dark background with a cursor that blinks in the same colors as the animations in the latest WWDC art." We'll know more starting on June 8 when the WWDC 2026 keynote kicks off Apple's developer conference. Apple iOS 28 first leak surfaces days before iOS 27 debut, hints at major changes

ver, even before iOS 27 is officially unveiled, the first details about iOS 28 have already emerged. Apple is currently preparing for its WWDC (Worldwide Developers Conference) 2026 event, which is scheduled to kick off next week. At the event, the main spotlight is expected to be on the debut of iOS 27 and Apple's latest AI-powered features. However, even before iOS 27 is officially unveiled, the first details about iOS 28 have already started to emerge. According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, Apple is already working on iOS 28, and the update is expected to be much bigger than this year's iOS 27 release. "Next year's '28' releases are already shaping up to be far more significant than the '27' updates," Gurman wrote, though he did not reveal any specific details about the upcoming software. Gurman also shared the internal codenames for Apple's future operating systems. According to him, iOS 28 is codenamed "Bell," while macOS 28 is internally known as "Poppy." For now, Apple's focus remains on iOS 27. The upcoming update is expected to introduce a major Siri overhaul and several new Apple Intelligence features. One of the most anticipated additions is a more personalised version of Siri that can better understand a user's personal context and what is happening on the screen. Apple previously demonstrated some of these capabilities at WWDC 2024. In one example, Siri was able to answer questions about a user's mother's flight and lunch reservation by pulling information from the Mail and Messages apps. Apple is also expected to add a new "Search or Ask" feature to the Dynamic Island. At this point, it is still unclear what exactly will make iOS 28 a bigger upgrade than iOS 27. Since the software is not expected to be unveiled until WWDC 2027, it may be a while before Apple reveals more details about its plans.

iOS 27: Release date, AI Siri, new features, eligible devices and other latest leaks

Apple's next major iPhone software update, iOS 27, is shaping up to be one of the most ambitious releases the company has put out in years. While much of the attention in recent months has been directed at the hardware side, which includes the upcoming iPhone 18 series and the long-rumoured first foldable iPhone Fold, the software story is arguably just as compelling. According to a series of reports from Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, iOS 27 is an important update for Apple because after years of playing it cautious, the company is under considerable pressure to catch up on artificial intelligence. The iOS 27 update is expected to overhaul Siri from the ground up, introduce a dedicated Siri app, bring meaningful AI-powered tools to the Photos and Camera apps and lay the groundwork for a more open Apple Intelligence ecosystem with third-party integrations. Apple is expected to preview iOS 27 publicly at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2026 keynote on 8 June, with a full release to follow in September alongside the new iPhone lineup. The biggest change coming to iOS 27 is Siri. What has long been Apple's most visible and most criticised software feature is finally getting a comprehensive overhaul. Apple is reportedly transforming Siri from a voice-command assistant into a full-blown chatbot that can compete directly with Claude, ChatGPT and Gemini. A dedicated Siri app is in development, offering a back-and-forth conversational interface with chat bubbles styled similarly to iMessage. The app will support both text and voice input, allow users to browse past conversations in a grid or list view and let them start new chats using suggested prompts. When Siri is activated via the wake word or the iPhone's side button, a pill-shaped animation will appear in the Dynamic Island. Asking Siri a question or giving it a task will bring up a transparent results card; swiping on it opens a conversation view that pulls in contextual cards for weather, notes, upcoming appointments and other relevant information. Apple is also integrating a new system-wide 'Search or Ask' bar accessible by swiping down from the top centre of the display in any app. It will behave similarly to Spotlight Search but is expected to return more advanced results and pull data from within apps. Siri features that were originally planned for iOS 26.4, including deeper personal context awareness, on-screen understanding and cross-app task execution, are now being pushed to iOS 27. Apple is reportedly partnering with Google and using a custom AI model built in collaboration with Gemini to power some of the new capabilities, including the chatbot functionality. One of the more significant shifts in iOS 27 is the addition of Siri Extensions. Building on the existing ChatGPT integration from iOS 26, Apple will allow rival chatbots such as Claude and Gemini to work directly within Siri. Users will be able to choose which AI services they want available inside Siri through an Extensions option in the Apple Intelligence and Siri settings. Apple is also creating a dedicated Extensions section in the App Store as a kind of marketplace for third-party AI integrations. Extensions will not be limited to Siri. Writing Tools, Image Playground and other Apple Intelligence features will also support alternative chatbots, allowing users to select their preferred service for tasks like text generation and image creation. Apple is even planning to let users choose voices from third-party AI services within Siri, making it clearer when a response is coming from Siri versus, say, Gemini. Both Genmoji and Image Playground are getting improvements in visual quality which is a direct result of Apple retraining its models. Image Playground is also being redesigned with a simpler interface for generating new images, a 'describe a change' option for editing existing creations and a revamped grid layout for browsing past generations. Apple is testing models that produce more lifelike images. Genmoji is being updated to consume fewer system resources, addressing reports of overheating and excessive battery drain. A new Suggested Genmoji feature will proactively surface custom emoji ideas based on a user's media library and messaging history, rather than requiring manual prompts every time. iOS 27 will also introduce a dedicated AI wallpaper generator. When selecting a new wallpaper, users will have the option to generate something custom using Image Playground directly from the wallpaper picker. As per leaks, Apple is adding three new AI-powered editing tools to the Photos app in iOS 27. An option to 'Extend' works similarly to generative fill in Adobe Photoshop, generating additional image content beyond the original frame of a photo and filling in background scenery when the crop is adjusted. The 'Enhance' tool applies automatic AI-driven improvements to colour, lighting and image quality, while 'Reframe' is designed specifically for spatial photos, letting users shift the perspective of an image after it has been captured. However, according to Gurman, Extend and Reframe are not yet performing reliably in testing. Either or both features could be delayed or scaled back before a public release, potentially arriving in a later developer beta or in iOS 27.1. The Camera app in iOS 27 is getting its most significant redesign in years. Apple is making the interface fully customisable, allowing users to choose which controls appear on screen and where they are positioned. These controls include flash, exposure, timer, depth of field, photo styles and resolution. They can be arranged at the top of the Camera interface and pulled from a transparent widget tray at the bottom of the screen. Apple will retain the current default layout for casual users while introducing an advanced layout aimed at professionals. The controls toggle, currently tucked in the top right of the app, is moving to the right of the shutter button and new grid and level options are also being added. A dedicated Siri mode is coming to the Camera app, sitting alongside the existing Photo, Video, Portrait and Panorama modes. When active, the shutter button will display the Apple Intelligence logo. This mode integrates Visual Intelligence more prominently, making it accessible without needing to go through Camera Control. New Visual Intelligence capabilities include scanning food nutrition labels to log dietary information in the Health app and reading contact details from business cards to add directly to the Contacts app. Apple is rebuilding the AirPods settings menu in iOS 27, iPadOS 27 and macOS 27. The update stops short of a full standalone AirPods app which users have been requesting following the addition of head gesture controls and hearing aid functionality. The existing settings panel is being reorganised to be cleaner, more functional and better at surfacing key features that currently get buried. Apple is building support for third-party AirPlay alternatives into iOS 27 to meet the requirements of the European Union's Digital Markets Act (DMA). Services such as Google Cast will be available as default options for wirelessly streaming video, photos and audio from an iPhone to a speaker or television. It remains unclear whether this capability will be limited to EU devices or rolled out globally. Shortcuts is getting a major update in iOS 27. Users will be able to describe in plain language what they want a shortcut to do and Siri will generate the workflow automatically, which will be immediately installed and available for use. Writing Tools is also being expanded. Apple is testing a dedicated AI grammar checker that functions like Grammarly, with a translucent suggestion menu that slides up from the bottom of the screen while typing in Messages, Mail and other apps. A 'Write With Siri' toggle and a 'Help Me Write' option are also being added to the keyboard. iOS 27 will include a 'Create a Pass' feature in the Wallet app, letting users generate digital passes by scanning physical tickets, membership cards and event passes. Three pass types are available: purple for events, blue for memberships and orange for other categories. Safari's start page is also getting a refresh, with four tabs at the top for switching between favourites, bookmarks, Reading List and history. On the accessibility front, Apple has previewed several features coming in iOS 27 that are powered by Apple Intelligence. iOS 27 is expected to be compatible with the following devices. Note that Apple Intelligence features will require an iPhone 15 Pro or newer. The iPhone 11 series and the 2nd generation iPhone SE are expected to be dropped from support. iOS 27 will be previewed at the WWDC 2026 keynote on 8 June 2026, which runs from 8 to 12 June. A public release is expected in September 2026, alongside Apple's new iPhone lineup.
