Google has a new mission in the AI era: to add Gemini to as many of the company's products as possible. We've already seen Gemini appear in search results, text messages, and more. In Google's latest update to Workspace, Gemini will be able to add calendar appointments from Gmail with a single click. Well, assuming Gemini gets it right the first time, which is far from certain. The new calendar button will appear at the top of emails, right next to the summarize button that arrived last year. The calendar option will show up in Gmail threads with actionable meeting chit-chat, allowing you to mash that button to create an appointment in one step. The Gemini sidebar will open to confirm the appointment was made, which is a good opportunity to double-check the robot. There will be a handy edit button in the Gemini window in the event it makes a mistake. However, the robot can't invite people to these events yet. The effect of using the button is the same as opening the Gemini panel and asking it to create an appointment. The new functionality is simply detecting events and offering the button as a shortcut of sorts. You should not expect to see this button appear on messages that already have calendar integration, like dining reservations and flights. Those already pop up in Google Calendar without AI. Gemini is a generative AI system like ChatGPT and Claude, which means it can hallucinate details and fail to account for context. This can make scheduling appointments particularly vexing. In our experience, Gemini often gets confused with dates, particularly if your email thread includes people discussing multiple possible meeting times. And making a calendar appointment incorrectly can have real-world consequences -- you don't want to be the person who missed an event because you trusted AI. Google says this feature will begin rolling out today, but it could take upward of two weeks to reach all users. It's also limited to English and the Gmail web interface at this time. You won't see it at all if you're using a Google account without premium AI access. Like many of Google's Gemini integrations, this one is only available to those paying for AI tools (whether they wanted to or not). To create an event, you can give Gemini commands like, "Add lunch with my parents to my schedule at 11 a.m. Tuesday" or "Add a workout to my calendar every weekday at 6 a.m." (You'll still need to invite other people manually to any event you create.) For event details, you can ask questions like, "When is my lunch meeting with my parents?" or "How long is my meeting next Friday?" When I tried it myself, I was able to push Gemini a little more by asking it, "What shows do I have on my calendar?" I asked it to show me my upcoming doctor appointments, and it did -- even one that was simply the word "ortho." Gmail can now use Google's Gemini AI to recognize when a message includes something that looks like an event and then offer to add it to your calendar. The screenshot illustrating the feature shows Gmail's web app, a message including the phrase "9am this Tuesday," and a Gemini sidebar in which the AI assistant offers to create an appointment for that date and time. Google notes some limits to the feature: It's not available in Gmail's mobile apps; it only works in English; and it doesn't surface for the limited set of messages from which Gmail can already extract events, like flight bookings and restaurant reservations. Plus, it requires a Google Workspace subscription, with pricing starting at $84 per year per user for a Business Starter plan that offers 30GB of storage. Google ratcheted up those rates in January -- by $12 a year in Business Starter's case -- when it added Gemini to Workspace. To use this new feature, Workspace subscribers will need to turn on "smart features and personalization." Google says the rollout will run through the middle of April; I don't have it in my own Workspace account yet. Users of the free version of Gmail can access this feature now, on desktop and mobile devices, and at no additional cost by syncing their Gmail account to Apple's Mail app for macOS, iOS, or iPadOS. And, in the case of Mail for macOS, they could have done so at any point since October 2007, which is when Apple shipped an add-to-calendar shortcut in Mac OS X Leopard. Like Google's new feature, Apple's detects calendar-adjacent content in a message like "tomorrow" or "March 17" and invites you to add a corresponding event to your calendar. You can do so by hovering over that text in Mail for macOS until an add-to-calendar prompt appears, tapping the underline shown under that text in Mail for iOS or iPadOS, or by accepting the Siri suggestion shown at the top of the message. I use this all the time on my Mac and iPad, and my only complaint is that the add-to-calendar dialog doesn't let you set a time zone, requiring me to flip over to the Calendar app to fix that for out-of-town events. Unlike Google's feature, however, Apple's consists of mere software instead of AI. And this software in question is based on a technology called Apple Data Detectors that not only predates any current notion of AI but predates Google itself: Apple's Advanced Technology Group developed it in the late 1990s.

Every event is a different color, highlighting overlaps, while grid segmentation simplifies an estimation of how long each event will take. Moreover, Assistant already excelled at creating Calendar events, and Gemini now taking over that duty is merely a rebranding of existing functionality. Perhaps these improvements would enhance accessibility or help if you're too busy to even look at the screen, and primarily use the AI for voice interaction. However, a button for that isn't visible in the current test UI. Hopefully this integration brings more useful AI-powered actions, like the facility to draft emails requesting to reschedule an appointment, or summarizing interesting stats like how many hours you spent conferencing in the past week. In any case, this is a test for now and the AI's capabilities could improve before global launch. It could also remain Workspace-exclusive after launch.

Press the "Add to Calendar" button, and Google will automatically scan and parse the relevant details and create a Google Calendar event for you. Thankfully, Google isn't making this a completely autonomous process -- the event will show up in a sidebar once generated, so you'll be able to check it for mistakes before you add it to your calendar (given how LLMs sometimes tend to hallucinate, this is a good idea). You can use the Edit button to make any changes to the proposed event, or to add more information. One thing Gemini can't do yet is invite others to the meeting, so for that, you'll need a trip to the Calendar app. The feature is also only available in English for now.
