This marks a continued trend in the preference for the institution, particularly for its computer science program. A staggering 72 of the top 100 rankers have joined the IIT Bombay campus, while IIT Delhi attracted 23, and IIT Madras drew in two of the top 100. Notably, all of the top 10 rankers chose to pursue computer science at IIT Bombay, reinforcing its status as a leading destination for engineering talent in India. Influx to IIT Bombay The demand for IIT Bombay is not new. Of the first 25 rankers, 24 opted for IIT Bombay, and the trend continued with 47 of the top 50 students choosing this institution. This influx showcases the institution's strong appeal among the brightest minds in the country. IIT Bombay's computer science department has long been a magnet for top-ranking students. Admission data from JEE (Advanced) 2024 indicates that computer science at IIT Bombay was a top choice for nearly half of the qualified candidates. Out of the top 500 rankers, 179 chose IIT Bombay, followed by 109 opting for IIT Delhi, and 69 selecting IIT Madras. IIT Bombay Director, Prof. Shireesh Kedare, expressed pride in the institute's continued appeal among top rankers. "I am proud that IIT Bombay remains the preferred destination for most of the top rankers in the JEE (Advanced) examination," he told TOI. He also congratulated the incoming students for choosing a path aligned with their aspirations and goals. Gender diversity at IIT Bombay is also notable this year. Among the top 500 girls who cleared JEE (Advanced), 16 have chosen IIT Bombay, with 29 girls and 217 boys from the top 1,000 making the institute their choice for the next four years. The preference for IIT Bombay among top rankers marks a significant shift from past trends. Approximately 30 years ago, IIT Kharagpur was the most sought-after institution among engineering aspirants. However, this year, it did not receive any students from the top 100 ranks. IIT Kanpur, once hailed as a top destination and offering "demi-god treatment" to its entrants, has also seen a shift in preference. Vishal Misra, an IIT Bombay alumnus and Vice Dean of Computing and AI at Columbia Engineering, recalled, "During my time, I think Kanpur used to be the most sought-after IIT. The top rankers used to go to IIT Kanpur." He attributes IIT Bombay's current popularity to its vibrant campus environment and strong networking opportunities. Misra noted a change in the mindset of students who now focus on entrepreneurship and innovation within India rather than seeking opportunities abroad. Several experts believe that the trend towards IIT Bombay is also peer-driven. Misra suggested, "If everybody's going to IIT Bombay every year, then, you know, next year also people want to go to IIT Bombay." The campus's location in Mumbai, with its dynamic environment, adds to its allure. The recent preference for IIT Bombay signifies a growing inclination among top engineering aspirants towards institutes that offer not just academic excellence but also robust networking opportunities and an entrepreneurial spirit. With the start of the new academic session, IIT Bombay continues to solidify its status as a premier choice for engineering education in India. with inputs from TOI

Iit Bombay And Computer Science Dominate As Jee (advanced) Toppers' Picks | - Times of India
Mumbai: Newcomers to the elite technological club of the country seem to have made a clear choice: 72 of the top 100 JEE (Advanced) rankers have arrived at the IIT Bombay campus. Another 23 chose IIT Delhi 23, and two picked IIT Madras. The clamour for computer science at IIT-B among the cream of the lot went up a notch to touch a perfect 10 -- all the top 10 all-India rankers in JEE are joining the Powai campus. Twenty-four of the first 25 and 47 of the top 50 followed suit and decided to pick the college over other technology schools at the close of admissions for the 2024-28 batch. Each year, the demand for quality engineering education throws up a disproportionate number of applicants at the computer science department of the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay. A look at the admission forms filled by those who qualified in the JEE (Advanced) 2024 shows that one of two put down computer science at IIT-B as one of their top choices. Data shared by the Indian Institute of Technology Madras shows that of the top 500, 179 chose IIT-B, followed by 109 choosing IIT Delhi, and 69 picking IIT Madras. Last year, 67 of the top 100 got a seat in IIT-B, though computer science at IIT-B was the first choice of 93 of the top 100 rankers. Classes for freshmen have started at the IITs. "I am proud that IIT Bombay remains the preferred destination for most of the top rankers in the JEE (Advanced) examination," IITB director Prof Shireesh Kedare said. "We welcome the students and congratulate them for having selected the best educational path, suited to their aspirations and goals." Girls have also made a clear choice. Sixteen of the top 500 girls arrived in the city, and 29 girls and 217 boys of the top 1,000 picked IIT-B as their campus for the next four years. On each IIT campus, the top 100 students are considered the icing on the creamy layer. About 30 years ago, IIT Kharagpur was the engineering mecca. The oldest IIT of the country, IIT Kharagpur, did not receive a single student from the top 100 this year; and before that, in 2004, only three of the top 100 went there. "While Bombay and Delhi were still building themselves, Kharagpur's students had already occupied top positions in big companies. Students looked at Kharagpur's illustrious alumni and rushed there. Now this has changed," a former JEE chairman said. Kanpur ruled the charts after that. A decade ago, admission to IIT-Kanpur ensured demi-god treatment. Only the brightest and the best could get past the gates there. It is no longer the case. IIT-B alumnus Vishal Misra, vice dean of computing and AI at Columbia Engineering, was recently at the Columbia Global Center Mumbai. Asked why IIT-B is the top choice for so many, he said: "It's the best. As an alum, I have to say that it's the best, for multiple reasons. I think being in Mumbai helps a lot too." He attributed the popularity to the campus environment and the powerful networking possibilities. "During my time, I think Kanpur used to be the most sought-after IIT. The top rankers used to go to IIT Kanpur. And I remember in our final year, in the fourth year, during the second semester, the discussion points used to be about admission and a scholarship to some US university. About 10-12 years ago, when I was visiting IIT Bombay, the discussion in the fourth year is not about who gets the call from where. The whole mindset has changed from going abroad to doing your own thing, being an entrepreneur in India," Misra said. He said there were great teachers at IIT Kanpur and it was a great institution. "But, it's in Kanpur, so it doesn't have that kind of environment." Many say the trend is also peer-driven. "If everybody's going to IIT Bombay every year, then, you know, next year also people want to go to IIT Bombay. They think if smart people last year did this thing, there must be a reason, right? So it's sort of slowly built on itself," Misra said.
