Meta plans advanced 'agentic' AI assistant for consumers
Meta is building a highly personalised AI assistant to carry out everyday tasks for its billions of users, as the company faces investor scrutiny over its escalating AI spending. The Big Tech group is building agentic tools for its more than 3bn users, according to people familiar with the matter, including an advanced digital assistant which will be powered by its new Muse Spark AI model. One person familiar with the project said the assistant is being trialled internally by a group of staff. Another insider said the goal was to develop a product similar to OpenClaw, which allows users to create AI bots known as agents to autonomously complete tasks on their behalf. Meta wants to allow users to share highly sensitive information, such as health and financial data, with its assistants if they so choose, one of the people familiar with the project said. However, some question whether consumers will be willing to do so. "There's a trust deficit as wide as the Grand Canyon," the person added. The initiative underscores chief executive Mark Zuckerberg's push to embed AI at the centre of Meta's consumer products, at a time of rising investor concerns over the costs and execution of his expansive vision for "personal superintelligence". Zuckerberg continues to pour billions of dollars into the AI infrastructure and talent even as the company plans to cut 10 per cent of its workforce later this month. Last week, Meta announced it would raise its capital expenditure by $10bn to as much as $145bn this year. Wall Street's concerns about the growing spending led to a sharp share price fall, with almost $170bn being wiped off the group's market capitalisation last week. Among Meta's other AI projects, the Financial Times has reported that the company is developing photorealistic, AI-powered 3D characters that users can interact with in real time -- starting with a digital clone of Zuckerberg. The Meta chief himself is involved in training and testing his own animated AI.

Mark Zuckerberg says Meta is working on AI agents for personal and business use - Engadget
Meta's superintelligence team is working on a new set of AI agents that are meant to help the company's users "achieve the diverse goals in their lives," according to CEO Mark Zuckerberg. Zuckerberg, who is reportedly also overseeing an AI clone of himself, said that his goal is for the agents to be more approachable and easier to use than existing agent products like OpenClaw. Speaking during Meta's first-quarter earnings call Wednesday, Zuckerberg said that the upcoming business and personal agents will build on the newly-released Muse Spark model, the first from Meta Superintelligence Labs (MSL). "Our goal is not just to deliver Meta AI as an assistant, but to deliver agents that can understand your goals and then work day and night to help you achieve them," he said. "We are building a personal agent focused on helping people achieve the diverse goals in their lives. We're also building a business agent focused on helping entrepreneurs and businesses across the world use our tools and others to grow their efforts, reach new customers and serve existing customers better." Zuckerberg didn't give a timeline for the new products, but he said that Meta's goal was to make agents more accessible than current platforms. OpenClaw, he said, offers "a very exciting glimpse of what types of things should be possible" but is "pretty rough" to set up. "There's a lot of agents out there that people are building for different things, and there aren't that many that I would want to give to my mother," he said. "How do you make a version of that experience that is a lot more polished and dialed and easy, and that has all the infrastructure basically done for people already."

Zuckerberg outlines push toward goal-driven AI agents
Meta is developing AI agents aimed at enhancing personal and business user experiences, according to CEO Mark Zuckerberg. The initiative seeks to assist users in "achieving the diverse goals in their lives." During Meta's first-quarter earnings call, Zuckerberg detailed the company's focus on producing more user-friendly agents compared to existing products like OpenClaw. He emphasized that these agents would leverage the newly-released Muse Spark model from Meta Superintelligence Labs (MSL). "Our goal is not just to deliver Meta AI as an assistant, but to deliver agents that can understand your goals and then work day and night to help you achieve them," Zuckerberg said. The personal agent aims to help individuals meet their varying objectives, while the business agent will support entrepreneurs in expanding their customer base and enhancing engagement. Zuckerberg did not provide a specific release timeline for these AI agents. He pointed out that Meta intends to improve accessibility beyond what current platforms offer. He described OpenClaw as providing "a very exciting glimpse of what types of things should be possible" but noted that it is "pretty rough" to set up. The development of these agents reflects a broader trend toward creating more polished user experiences. Zuckerberg stated, "There aren't that many that I would want to give to my mother," highlighting a need for agents that simplify user interaction and setup. The initiative positions Meta to compete in a rapidly evolving AI landscape, focused on user-centered applications tailored to individual and business needs.

The assistant is being trialed internally by some staff, and Meta outlined its plan for the project at a companywide meeting last week, according to the report. Meta did not immediately reply to PYMNTS' request for comment. According to the FT report, Meta tried to hire OpenClaw founder Peter Steinberger before he joined OpenAI, and Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said last week during an earnings call that there is an opportunity to develop a version of the OpenClaw experience that is more polished and easier to use. PYMNTS reported April 29 that during that day's Meta earnings call, Zuckerberg covered Meta's long-term vision for AI, framing personal superintelligence as the company's chief product goal. "My view is that human progress has always been driven by people pursuing their individual aspirations," he said. Also during the call, Zuckerberg said the company had seen a surge in business users employing its AI tools. The number of conversations being handled by these tools each week leapt from 1 million at the start of the year to 10 million by late March. In addition, Muse Spark, Meta's first model from the company's in-house AI lab, debuted during the first quarter and now powers Meta AI across all apps and the standalone Meta AI app. Sessions per user grew double digits following the introduction. Meta also upped its full-year guidance for capital expenditures from the earlier $115 billion to $135 billion to a new projection of $125 billion to $145 billion, citing the rising cost of memory and additional data center capacity and acknowledging that it has consistently underestimate its compute needs. On Friday (May 1), it was announced that Meta has acquired Assured Robot Intelligence (ARI), a startup developing AI models for general-purpose, humanoid robots. In February 2025, it was reported that Meta planned to develop AI-powered humanoid robots, including hardware, AI, sensors and software, with a focus on robots that can perform household chores.
