You can no longer Google the word 'disregard' | TechCrunch
Earlier this week, Google rolled out a completely new Search experience, foregrounding AI summaries and kicking the traditional "ten blue links" far down the page. But the sheer scale of Google Search means there are lots of edge cases that the company doesn't seem to have considered. For instance, this is what you'll now get if you type the word "disregard" into Google Search. Google has been catching some flack on social media for this, and it's easy to see why. As you'll notice, the Merriam-Webster link is still in there, but you have to scroll past a huge block of empty space. For most users, that single reply is the only thing you'll see. And crucially, the AI response serves no conceivable value to a user searching the word "disregard." It's just a broken tool. For context, here is the same search in Bing, which has been less aggressive about its AI summaries. It's not perfect, but there is some useful information to be found here. I have been a professional tech journalist for nearly fifteen years, and before today, I cannot think of a single time when a Bing search result was more valuable than the Google equivalent. There really is a first time for everything!

Google's AI search is so broken it can 'disregard' what you're looking for
Google's AI Overviews are running into an interesting problem right now. As of this writing, if you search for the term "disregard," instead of showing the usual AI-generated summary of search results, the AI Overview section instead includes a response like what you'd see from a more traditional AI chatbot, as called out by a post on X. To one Verge colleague searching "disregard": Got it! Let me know if you need help with anything else. Nothing else followed in the AI Overview portion of the results page. To me, initially: No problem at all! How can I help you today? I searched for "disregard" again later and got another response, which you can see in the image at the top of this post. AI Overviews aren't just tripping up over the word "disregard." When searching for "ignore," Google's AI Overview section showed the following message to a Verge colleague: Message received! I'm here and ready to help. What would you like to focus on today? Just let me know if there's a specific topic, task, or question you'd like to explore. When they searched "skip," the AI Overview section said: It looks like your message was just a test or a typo! Feel free to ask a question, share a prompt, or let me know how I can help you with your tasks today. I'm ready whenever you are! Google didn't immediately reply to a request for comment about what's going on. However, this is almost certainly just some kind of funny bug. Maybe Google Search itself is tired after everything that happened at Google I/O.

Searching for 'Disregard' Breaks Google
On Tuesday, Google held its I/O developer event, and introduced an AI-forward version of Google Search that the company described as an "intelligent search box" powered by the newest version of Gemini. It turns out Google's all-new version of search semi-breaks when you search for the word "disregard." Typing "disregard" into Google Search results in Google's AI interpreting it as a system-style instruction instead of a search query. "Understood. Message disregarded," is the result. You do get standard search results like a Merriam-Webster definition of disregard if you scroll down further, but the AI Overview reply is filled with a bunch of white space that blocks out what's below. There's a similar response on mobile devices, though with less visible white space.

Time to switch to Bing? Searching for words like 'disregard' or 'ignore' breaks AI Overviews in Google Search
* Google Search is having problems with certain search words * It seems the AI Overviews treat these words like commands * One of the words causing problems for users is "disregard" Just a few days ago, Google unveiled a whole host of updates that will effectively turn its famous search engine into an AI bot interface, but it looks like there are going to be some glitches along the way: searches for words like "disregard" or "ignore" are currently breaking AI Overviews in Google search. As spotted by reporter Thomas Maxwell and others (via Android Police), typing these words returns a lot of blank space at the top of the screen, with the regular blue link search results appearing some way down the page. What's missing is the AI summary that now appears at the top of most results search pages on Google. It appears the AI is getting confused, and thinks that these words are being issued as commands rather than search queries. Indeed, the screenshot shared by Maxwell shows Google saying "No problem. Consider the prompt null and void." It has effectively disregarded the search for "disregard", rather than showing the definition of the word like it should be doing. Our AI search future No doubt Google will iron out this bug before too long, but it's a reminder that AI can and will make mistakes -- as Google will tell you every time you get answers inside the Gemini AI app (in very small text at the bottom of the screen). You don't have to look far online to find some pretty negative reactions to Google's AI fail, and it seems that there are a significant number of users who'd rather stick to the old way of searching the web, without all the added AI. For Google though, this is the future. It knows its search business is under threat if people start to use AI chatbots like ChatGPT to find all their information, so it wants to get ahead of the competition with AI offerings of its own. If you want to stick to the old way of browsing the web -- and perhaps give more support to writers and publishers along the way -- then search engine alternatives such as DuckDuckGo and Kagi are available, and there's always Bing too. These portals have AI features of their own, but they're not quite as prominent as Google's. Google's AI Overviews Was Disregarding These Search Keywords
AI Overview's chatbot was reportedly considering the keyword as a command Google Search's integrated artificial intelligence (AI) experience, AI Overviews, reportedly suffered a snag over the weekend. When users searched specific keywords, such as "disregard" or "stop," the dedicated space is said to glitch and stop showing any information. This results in a wide blank space that users reportedly had to scroll past to see any results. The new glitch surfaced just days after the Mountain View-based tech giant announced the redesigned, AI feature-rich Search experience. Notably, the company has fixed the issue. Google's AI Overviews Reportedly Hits a Snag According to a Business Insider report, the AI Overviews in Search suffered a strange glitch on Friday. Several social media users shared screenshots of the Gemini-powered chatbot considering specific keywords as commands and responding accordingly. The biggest example of this was the word "disregard." When users reportedly searched for it, instead of showing the meaning of the word as it does for other terms, the space responds with, "Understood. Let me know whenever you have a new prompt or question." Reports have claimed that similar results were seen with words such as "stop," "quit," "ignore," "look," and "forget." AI Overviews is supposed to act as an extension of Search and provide users with helpful information in a dedicated space right underneath the search box. However, the chatbot reportedly responded as if these words were shared as a direct command. In most cases, users found a blank space that had to be manually scrolled before the search results appeared. It is likely that these words were among the edge cases of the code, which escaped the developer's eye. It is unclear if the glitch occurred recently or has been in the system since the beginning, but it went under the radar. However, it is speculated that the redesigned Search experience might have added the glitch in AI Overviews. A Google spokesperson told the publication, "We're aware that AI Overviews are misinterpreting some action-related queries, and we're working on a fix, which will roll out soon." Gadgets 360 staff members checked the reported keywords and found that AI Overviews is returning normal results without any issues.

Searching For The Term "disregard" Breaks Google Search, See For Yourself
As absurd as it is, yes, if you Google the term "disregard" right now, you'll get a broken search result, which is amusing to see, especially since this error comes days after the I/O 2026 keynote, where the technology giant introduced its revamped AI-powered version of Google Search. While standard search results, such as the term's definition, show up at the bottom, the space under AI Overview is filled with nothing but black and white, depending on whether you have dark mode enabled or not. When we typed in the same term in Microsoft Edge, we got a bunch of search results, showing that the problem is from Google's end. The results are the same on Google Search, whether you view it from a desktop or a smartphone, with the response being different, though the outcome is the same. For instance, searching for "disregard" will give you the response "Message ignored! Let me know if there's anything else I can help you with," and if you refresh the page, you'll be greeted by "Message disregarded. How can I help you today?" A third attempt will give you the result "Understood. I will ignore the previous request or prompt. How can I help you today?" and on the fourth occasion, Google's AI Overview will say "Understood! Just let me know if you need help with anything else." What's interesting about these results is that if you Google "ignore," you'll get the same response, and while we'll have a laugh about this, AI Overview will eventually be fixed. However, this should be a reminder of the pitfalls of incorporating AI into search results, and now that companies are in this race, there's no stopping it. At the very least, these errors should be addressed at the earliest.

Users Surprised as Google Search AI Responds Unexpectedly to 'Disregard' Query
Google's AI-powered search engine sparked online buzz after unexpectedly responding to users searching the word 'disregard.' The unusual interaction raised fresh questions about AI search reliability and conversational search technology. Google has already rolled out AI Mode, which is an advanced search experience users can switch to for more conversational interactions. Search experienced a significant glitch on May 22, 2026. Users who searched for the word 'disregard' met with an unexpected AI chatbot response. It stated, "Understood. I have disregarded your previous prompt. How can I help you today?" The apparent glitch occurred when users searched a variety of command words, including 'disregard,' 'ignore,' 'dismiss,' 'stop,' and 'start.' Instead of presenting Google's traditional list of blue links, the search engine responded as though users had issued instructions to an AI assistant. Google hasn't acknowledged the issue officially, but it may already be fixing it.

Google's newly redesigned AI-powered search experience hit a snag when users discovered that searching for words like 'disregard' causes AI Overviews to malfunction. Instead of displaying helpful information, the AI interprets these terms as system commands, responding with chatbot-style acknowledgments and leaving users with blank space. Google confirmed it's working on a fix for the glitch.
