François Chollet Unveils Ndea: A New Approach to AGI

François Chollet, renowned AI researcher and creator of the Keras deep learning framework, has launched Ndea, a new AI research and science lab focused on developing Artificial General Intelligence (AGI). Co-founded with Mike Knoop, former head of AI at Zapier, Ndea aims to revolutionize AI research by combining program synthesis with advanced deep learning techniques 1.

The Vision Behind Ndea

Chollet and Knoop believe that the path to AGI lies in merging intuitive pattern recognition enabled by deep learning with formal reasoning through guided program synthesis. This approach, they argue, will allow AI systems to adapt and innovate far beyond current task-specific applications 3.

"We're betting on a different path to build AI capable of true invention, adaptation, and innovation," Chollet stated on social media. "We believe we have a small but real chance of achieving a breakthrough -- creating AI that can learn at least as efficiently as people, and that can keep improving over time with no bottlenecks in sight" 2.

Program Synthesis: The Key to AGI?

Ndea's research focuses heavily on program synthesis, a technique that allows AI to generalize to problems it hasn't seen before from only a few examples. While program synthesis is traditionally computing-intensive, Chollet believes this limitation can be overcome, potentially accelerating scientific progress 2.

Building a World-Class Team

The startup is actively recruiting remote researchers to assemble what they describe as the "world's top program synthesis team" 4. Ndea operates as a fully remote organization, seeking candidates with strong technical expertise, particularly in translating mathematical concepts into code 3.

Beyond AGI: A Factory for Scientific Advancement

Ndea's long-term vision extends beyond the creation of AGI. The lab aims to act as a "factory for rapid scientific advancement," capable of solving both known and unknown challenges. From tackling current frontiers like autonomous vehicles and sustainable energy to accelerating entirely new discoveries, Ndea sees itself as a catalyst for scientific progress 3.

The Founders' Backgrounds

François Chollet brings extensive experience from his time at Google, where he worked on core research into deep learning and AI systems. He is also the creator of the ARC-AGI benchmark, a widely used metric for measuring progress toward AGI 3.

Mike Knoop, co-founder of Zapier, brings his expertise in engineering, product development, and early adoption of AI technologies. Both Chollet and Knoop are also co-founders of the ARC Prize Foundation, a nonprofit organization focused on advancing open AGI research 3.
